I’m thinking it might be time to replace my aging 19” 4:3 Xerox monitor with something more suitable.

I use my pc for CAD (mainly 2d), viewing and editing photos, general office tasks and watching the odd video.

I was thinking of the 24” but CAD would be easier on the 27” so I may stretch the budget. I’m not in a massive hurry so I will wait for the next prices discount to turn up.

The monitors I have short listed are:

Dell U2711 Ultrasharp
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2711.htm

Dell U2410 Ultrasharp
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm

I have also noticed a company called Hazro http://www.hazro.co.uk/HZ27WD.php The forum sites say it’s same panel used in the Mac 27” and it gets good reviews. It has been on offer for £360 which is a large saving over the Dell U2711.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hazro_hz27wa.htm

Has anyone got or used a Hazro monitor?

Are there any other monitors I should be considering?

I don’t have a budget as such but I guess around £560 is as much as I would like to spend, If there is a cheaper alternative to save some money great.

Have a look for seller nrg_it on eBay, they sell refurb dells with warranty. Check the listings, they always list faulty pixels.

I got one of my 2209wa from them and it's been faultless.

I use a HP ZR24w IPS monitor, which is superb, it is used in conjunction with a Spyder 3 giving perfect screen to print results.

May I ask a question re the nrg_it ebay monitors.

When one of the faults is '1 dead pixel' just how serious is this and is it noticeable because if it not visible in the everyday use of it, the prices are fantastic. I am not a gear head brand new addict like some so these would be of interest to me.

Ask away..

Dead pixels are quite common and cheaper monitors used to be suplied with upto 2 dead pixels. It does not mean the monitor will fail quicker.

A lot depends on the work you are going to use it for. On a white screen there will be one black spot bit like a speck of dirt.

have a read of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defective_pixel

nrg_it prices do look quite good.

it would be either a pixel that has stopped responding (i.e. black) or sometimes you can get stuck pixels where they stick in a certain colour phase.

how much you notice them will be down to location and how observant you are. my plasma tv has a sticky red pixel in the bottom middle of the screen that only shows up in certain conditions. personally i only notice it if my eye is drawn to that area anyway (i.e. the main "action" is there).

Ive got the Hazro WC glass fronted model, bleeding brilliant and exact same as the new 27inch iMac screen

I was looking at changing to an iMac 27" then decided to stick with my MacBook Pro. Do you know if you can run this as an external monitor from a MBP? (It is a 17" 2008 CoreDuo 2.6GHz)

I fancy going this route then upgrading my MBP some point in the future as and when.

Thanks for any help

The WC is stripped down and only has a dual DVI-D input, i think yu need the 10 bit glass front model or the WD version unless your macbook can be connected up with some sort of adapter, not sure on your outputs but you do need a dual DVI-D enabled graphics card to run it at 2560x1440 resolution

go to the overclockers forum, theyll tell you.

No dead pixels or anything here

For a budget option....I've got the LG IPS 236 23". A little over half the price of the dell 24" when I was buying.

I had Hazro but sold it within 2 months.
Version without glass was still too reflective for me.
Hazro users are aware that on some PC configurations, you wont see POST. And that was the case for me . And that was main reason for me to sold it on.
I had one dead pixel but it disappeared while being delivered to new owner :)
Hazro are lovely screens. Loved resolution and colours.
Would I consider buying it again? Yes, but not in the room I used to use it due to huge windows I have there.

Thanks for the input guys.

Is the dell U2711 screen as reflective as the Hazro? I have read the screen coating can be an issue on the Dell.

Tied between the Hazro and Dell at the min.

Is there much of a diffrance in the back lighting between these two screens?

The Dell is a matte screen, if you put the 2 side by side you would throw the Dell in the bin, if i remember correctly the Dell also uses the larger colour gamut which over saturates everything, they come pre calibrated from the factory but have been done by blind monkeys dangling a real spider on the screen

Do consider the HP LP2475W it's not at all bad.
see LINK for a review. I've had one for a while and no problems at all.

How about HP ZR2740w - 27" 2560x1440 sound quite appealing.
Currently using the HP ZR22w, a 21.5" 1920x1080 screen and love the quality but it would be handy having the extra size & pixels for £600

I do like how LED screens look like so that would be Hazro so would prefer to go LED again( dell is LCD)
But would go for dell for their quality control and for warranty support.( if you buy from lets say overclockers you get 3 years of door to door warranty - which is brilliant! Only had to use it once and got my screen replaced next day :). )

Surely an "LED" screen simply refers to the type of lamp behind the panel rather than the panel itself.

For example my HP screen is CCFL backlit whereas and apple imac is LED backlit, but as far as I'm aware they both have the same 21.5" LCD panel.

I'm not sure that the back-lighting source will much effect on the "look" of the screen other than the fact that LED "warm up" time is pretty much instant wheras CCFL takes a few minutes to reach optimum performance.

Just for info, it's always worth a look on here if you need info on specific vdu's LINK

Hope it helps...

cheers

LED lighting offers more consitant lighting across the screen area, CCFL can be darker in corners and sides the Dell appers to be quite good. You also get more light bleeding with the CCFL.

The Dell has light variance of about -15% the Hazro is -10% and the light is more uniform across the screen.

The Dell U2711 and Hazro use the same LG H-IPS pannel. But he way its lit and driven are diffrent the screen coating are also diffrent.

QC of early Hazro seams poor but newer ones seam to have less issues, but surport is still poor.

The Hazro stand is also poor it only offers tilt nothing else.

I have not looked at the HP ZR2740w so it might be worth a look.

Just been looking at a review of the HP ZR2740w http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_zr2740w.htm and the reviewer say there is no way of setting the RGB channels which seems a bit odd!

My much cheaper HP ZR22w has the ability to set each colour channel separately which to me would seem pretty vital for any monitor that is to be used for photography. There are also about 3 "presets" for colour temperature but they are all pretty useless compared with full manual control of RGB.
