Last year I bought a monitor from NRG on ebay, when it arrived it didnt work as the cable they supplied was the wrong one. I called them up and briefly mentioned that there was a bump on the screen as well but that it could be cleaned off. Anyhow I was more interested in getting the monitor to actually work.

The new cable arrived and it has been working fine, over the last few months however its been flickering and randomly the left side of the screen has strange pink waves over the textures.
Its pretty hard to see but its a perfect line down the middle of the screen and it happens totally randomly. I usually notice it more when in a game or editing dark pictures.
Turning the screen off doesnt help and its usually there when it comes back on.
Sometimes i'll go for a few days and not see it then its back for a while.

I've changed cables and gfx card, even used just 1 monitor and it still pops up.

As their ebay listing said 1 years warrenty I sent it back which cost £15 however they told me that they cant seem to see the problem when running their tests. Its possible that there could be something loose inside and the trip back the office has changed it.
Im slightly worried they are going to just mail it back and i'll have lost the £15 and still have a faulty screen.

They also mentioned that because they were not told about the dot on the screen when I recieved it then there isnt anything they can do about it.

1. I should have taken a picture of the screen when it was going wrong
2. I should have made more of a fuss over the mark on the front.

however what can I do? I suppose ebay or paypal have a buyer protection? but after 5 months?

I would explain that if a trip back to the office has caused an internal correction then a trip back is just as likely to restore the fault. Explain that the monitor is faulty and that you are not prepared to accept its return without a guaranteed repair.

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Faulty goods and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)

On [date of purchase] I bought a [description of purchase] from you for [insert price] which has stopped working.

The problem is [enter description of fault].

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) states that when a consumer buys goods from a trader they must be: as described; of a satisfactory quality; and fit for any purpose made known at the time of sale to the seller.

This legislation also states that the seller, not the manufacturer, is legally obliged to sort out a problem if the goods do not meet these requirements.

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) says: if goods break within the first six months after purchase then there is a presumption the goods were faulty when sold.

My goods are not [delete as appropriate - as described/fit for purpose/of satisfactory quality] and I wish to claim a [delete as appropriate - repair/replacement/refund] of my goods under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 as amended.

Please respond to my complaint within 7 days from receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully,
[your name]

quick question, what about the bump on the screen, they said that because I didnt mention it when I got the monitor there isnt anything I can really do about it.

Is this true? Im just terrible about going about fixing things and sending stuff away when I use it everyday so I didnt bother following it.

Oh and I purchased the screen on the 11/06/11

But you did didn't you, you called them about the wrong cable and told them about the bump at the same time.

I think the issue is that it was only really a passing comment when I mentioned it and I doubt they would have taken notice. it would be a case of he said, she said as it wasnt in an email so not much proof.

Passing comment or not, you reported it - they should have taken notice and it is not your fault if they didn't.

Don't think that's strictly true, I could send an email to the sales dept of a company and it wouldn't necessarily end up with support/ warranty dept.

Going back to the original post though, it would be extremely odd for a monitor issue to get corrected in transit. Presumably things like bad cables and graphics cards were ruled out prior to sending?

If it didn't that would be the fault of the sales dept, not the customer.
