Yes
Told today that my company will be going on a 4 day week.

Pros - extra day for photography

cons - lose 20% pay :'(

Great start to 2010

Time to start looking at going pro...

pro - one day less commuting
pro - one extra day of the week to get a life
PRO - go for it - you'll always look back and wish you did it sooner!

Agreed. I switched to a 5 day week from a 4 day week, for no extra, and I hate now having to work Fridays.

Mine went on a 0 day a week in March, and that is where I am still at. The moral here I think is, be grateful for small mercy`s eh?

The company I worked for before retiring has given all the staff a 15% pay cut - but they are still having to work full-time, so the four-day week does at least give you some time off.

Anthony.

Thanks for the replies.

Just gets you a bit wound up when the bosses are still driving around in their merc company cars... :shake:

Looked on jobs websites and there are better jobs in the area..

Hard decision stay in engineering or use the extra day to learn and go into photography..

Been in engineering 20 years fancy a change...

It's good that there seem to be other opportunities locally. Worth going for them as well as thinking about a change of career.

As to the bosses cars, I would guess they are leased and it can cost more to get out of a lease deal that continuing to pay the monthly fees - and I would also imagine they are hoping that the business will be back to full time soon.

There are a lot of small companies in trouble, I run my own light haulage business which seems to be on a permenant 3 day week at the moment, last week I was talking to a fork truck driver, it was belting it down and he was on an indoor truck, no roof, no windows.

In the summer they were told they'd be getting all weather heated fork trucks for the winter, then the boss comes round and says we can't afford them, 2 weeks later he comes to work in a new Aston Martin DB9

The Light hauliers around here must be racked out with work. I was trying to get a deal put together for nationwide transport costs, in the end I gave up and bought a new truck and employed another driver.

as some of you may know my dad's runs his own buisness well 2 actually

of them is only just staying afloat rather than shuting it down he has actually just bought a MOT station in the region of £20,000 - £25,000 to hopefully make more money and 2 to make sure the lad's still have job's

my dad has always been the same look out for the staff and the staff should look out for you

not always true

Sounds familiar. Where I used to work, there was never any money for shopfloor equipment or repairs to the roof, which had been leaking for years and resulted in huge puddles whenever there was a downpour. The admin offices on the other hand had all the windows replaced, brand new furniture, computers replaced, and a plasma screen installed in the reception area, as well as management company cars of course.

eye candy for the customers , seen it before , now a quite sad funny ironic sort of story , the last place i worked at had a new state of the art office block built about 10 years ago , at the time i was working with a contractor who told me about some research that was done regarding spending big sums of money to impress customers , quite a few went bust within 5 to 10 years , bet you can guess the rest :( ...............

I think you're right there Paul, and I imagine many other manufacturing firms do the same. It was quite a contrast really looking back on it. You walked into the offices and everything had a very futuristic look about it - walked onto the shopfloor and you were stepping back to the Victorian era.

snap , we were always bodging stuff together , it was a running joke that if the stores ran out of gaffer tape and plastic metal then the place would shut down , it did one day when we ran out of plastic metal , quite sad really :bang:
