MentalBlock's 2011 52 - Week 52 'Glass' added & 52 FINISHED

Hiya Neil,

I see you found your hidden shot ... well done, great idea and like how you have included TP in it, I will never look at spaghetti alphabet the same way again

Hope you enjoyed eating it after :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

That G looks like a C !!

Great take on the theme, even if i did miss read it as Talk Photo C*#p !!!:bonk:

Adie

Great shot

Did you play about & spell out some rude words :D

Andy? were you one of them avid dictionary readers?? :nono:

Didn't your mother teach you not to play with your food :nono:
:thumbs::thumbs:

Neil, i must commend you on this, superb...the clarity of the hidden message as well.. i had to do a double take for the word hidden as well..:thumbs:

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

A few letters did go missing in the making of this image, but the majority of them met their end with my children - the OH and I had take out instead!

I didn't do any rude words, my 6 year old was hanging around with a spoon so I didn't want to teacher any rude words!

Adie - I see what you mean there, I didn't spot that until you said.
The 'G' was an issue, I couldn't get it to stay put, even by using tweasers!

As a bit of a self critique, since I've been looking at it, I wish I'd zoomed out a bit then cropped to the edge of the toast, but by the time I got the image on the PC, the props had gone!

Brilliant idea Neil. Think you are right about zooming out a touch as I didn't realise it was on toast at first, but i don't think it matters really. Well done.

Hi Neil

totally brilliant idea & shot for Hidden  Great colors , the bit of toast showing works great though maybe cropping it out would have worked just as well....

Brilliant Idea for 'hidden'.

I've just spent a very enjoyable 10 mins looking through your 52 to date. Good ideas and nice work!

Hi Lynne,
Thanks for dropping by and I'm glad you like it.

"very enjoyable 10 minutes" - what a nice ting to say, thank you Gary

Hi Neil, this had me foxed at first. But, then really made me smile. Great idea for the theme. Well taken photo as well.

Week 23 - Broken

I had a smashing time doing this one

Week_23_Broken_Final by HaplessClicker, on Flickr

The set up is two slate floor tiles, one as the base and the other as the background resting against the house in the garden.

It took several practice shots with a cut down apple (to get it to the same weight) before moving on to the eggs, of which I used four (one of which my son broke before it got a chance to start in this weeks theme!).

The background of the first shot was actually one of the last shots with a longer shutter speed to get more motion blur.
I then added a shot of one of the other eggs mid drop (on to a cushion!).
You'll notice that the base is slightly different as I had to clean off the previous egg - I may PP in a better base if I have one as this is the only bit that is niggling me in the final image.

The last two shots are the same egg with one shot on impact - no PP on that, I'm quite pleased with my cat like reactions - and then once the egg has stopped.

I hope you like it.

I've a second idea for Broken, but there will be more mess involved and Health and Safety issues, so we'll have to see!

Hiya Neil,

Great idea for the theme of broken :D

I'm not so sure about the distracting mark on the background tile.

I like how you have included some motion blur.

Would would have been great is if you could have drawn a bit of a face etc on the egg to make it look like Humpty Dumpty :D But as you said, there were 4 eggs harmed in this exercise so that could have taken some drawing

Photographing moving things is still something I need a lot more practice with, so sorry I can't offer too much technical advice in that regards. Funny thing is for me motion blur is pretty much hit or miss (and can be quite effective at times ... which I think worked well in my Woodland Fairy shot on my last entry to the Hidden theme).

What settings did you use for the falling egg shot?

Well done on the effort though, it surely fits the theme well.

Cheers

Dawn :)

It's a lot harder to do than I though it would be and you've done a decent job.

I feel a faster shutter speed to really freeze the motion, even in the first one. I'd like to have seen you a bit closer as well.

Personally, I really like the rusty looking mark on the back...

Cheers.

Well caught Neil! I hope you wore your safety goggles, a piece of sharp shell in the eye

Hi Tina,

It's the salmonella I'm more worried about!

Hi Dawn,

What setting?
I was in manual mode for once and just tried to get it as slow as possible but not too slow for hand operating the shutter, so it was playing and testing really - from flickr on one of the shots 1/125, f10, 200ISO.

As for the mark in the tile, I think it's part of the tile rather than a mark. I only had three left and these two were the best!

Hi Andy,

I wanted a sense of movement for the falling, so I took two shots at different shutter speeds for the first one and did a bit of a merge.

As for getting closer, well I agree, but I wasn't sure at first on how far the egg would go on impact!

Good Work Mate... I know from my hard pic that its a lot harder to capture this sort of image than I originally shot... so well done. Just a thought to try and make it more authentic in terms of differences in backgrounds etc... could you not just try taking three shots on rapid fire mode going for a fast ISO and wide appature to get a fast shutter speed that you could get the three shots from the one egg. Your nikon should manage a few frames per sec.

Just a thought it's prob what i'd have tried first as your way seems more contrived... almost like you have thought too much but that's given you issues... maybe im well off and you tried that first though?

I tried a couple on burst mode thinking the same as you, but it proved more difficult to time/ get the impact shot so I gave up.

As Dawn has said I would have chosen a different tile for the background. And as you have pointed out yourself the base tile in the first shot looks odd with the other shots. So basically what I am saying is nothing. Well done, great capture.

Hi Neil

great work for Broken

Love : the montage , the background , the idea , execution & description of your troubles to get the shot  The tile coloring doesn't bother me at all .

Possibly agree with Andy in that a faster shutter speed to freeze the falling egg in shots 1 & 2 may have looked better & to have been closer but appreciate your reasoning on why you did what you did & I know that shooting moving objects is sometimes more difficult than you'd think

Great idea and a nice triptych as well. Must say I'm in the "anti rusty mark" camp. You could have used a bit of diffused flash to help with the exposure and draw some detail out. Not sure on the amount of motion in the first shot.

Also if you try it again nominate a stunt egg and give it a quick v hot boil first, then the shell shatters like glass and using flash you can freeze bits flying off it through the air, then for the final image replace with a normal one to get the drizzle

Thanks for the tips, I may give it another go as a few people have made some suggestions which may make t better - no harm in trying, unless you're the egg that is!

yes great idea and as dawn said shame about detail in the tile but great shot and idea

Hi Neil, a great idea for the theme, from all the comments posted, I can't add anything more.

Hi Paul/ Michael,

Thanks for commenting.

I picked up a cable shutter release this week so I was thinking of a re-shoot (wont need someone to drop the egg for me), but I've decided against it.
I' hoping Sarah will stop enjoying this sun and post week 24 :)

Week 24 - Bright

My original idea for this theme is subject to the weather. So, looking into how I could do a little interim image, I stumbled on this take on a light bulb shot.

Week 24 - Bright 001 by HaplessClicker, on Flickr

I took a couple of this with all the glass removed, but leaving some in added to the picture.

Week 24 - Bright 002 by HaplessClicker, on Flickr

The first one suits the theme of bright, but I prefer the colours in the second.
There are a couple more on my flickr.

Thanks for looking.

Hi, Neil, I like them both.

#1 is like a jellyfish or an atomic bomb...

#2, I like the blue smoke trail. I pushed it a bit in PS and got more blue which seemed to improve, to me anyway.

Cheers.

I've pushed it a bot more myself....
