Matt or Gloss?

I'm going to get some prints ordered, and just wondering what's the best to go with, matt or gloss paper?
 
Depends. Glossy looks fantastic, I always had my wedding prints done to 9X6 or 12X8 glossies, but it was a PITA handling them, as they pick up fingerprints so easily, I used to wear a pair of cotton gloves when mounting them in albums to save having to deal with the fingerprints later. :gag:

If it's for framing, matt might be better as the reflection usually isn't a good thing. Get non-reflective glass frames if you can.
 
i much prefer gloss for the tones and life in the picture

matts to dull for me
 
Gloss + them cheep very thin rubber gloves that mechanics wear, they don't slide on the print when your framing it :thumbs:

I produce most of my Landscape/Aerial pictures on matt paper (Permajet Portrait Classic) as it gives a fine art finish however it is poor for sports and mono where either a fibre based gloss or full gloss paper gives a more suitable finish. Horse for courses really.

I think it depends on the subject matter and colour/B+W etc. I Agree with Gary above that landscapes do look better matt whilst gloss for weddings etc.

Agreed!! Reminded me of the interior decorator and his wife who fell out of bed every night as they prefered a mat finish!! :D

On topic I prefer matt/satin/semi-gloss for prints that are going behind glass.. but gloss for albums.
 
Lustre seems the best, as it has a glossy look yet doesn't pick up finger-prints like gloss does. As MJ said, DS Colourlabs do lustre, and it's the same price as gloss (why would anyone choose gloss over lustre at the same price???). Every other printers I've come across charge extra for lustre.
 
I used lustre for the first time recently, (from colab)
and I must admit I did like the finish over gloss
or matt
 
depends what you want to do with the prints.

naked and colour I'd go for gloss (my personal preference is harman FB glossinkjet)
Naked and B&W I'd go go for Matt (assuming we are talking fuji crystal archive type prints not inject matt) or a FB gloss print
behind glass I'd go for a luster or FB inkjet or a matt print (fuji type print)
 
I used to be a big fan of gloss and matt would put me off. But recently I've had a change of view and have found myself drawn towards matt. The last few enlargements that I did were on matt.
 
Ok, I think i'll go with gloss then as these will be going in an album!

I do the same thing, at least for prints I intend framing, Gloss just doesn't work under glass, too many reflections - I use DSCL too....

If they were to put in an album though I'd go with Gloss
