I have a 550ex and want to try it as a master. Can it control more than one 430?

Technically it can control hundreds, and split them into groups too, not sure on the 550ex if its 2 of 3 groups it can split into though

The problem you'd have with multiple slaves is line of sight. I tend to line up mine fairly carefully - but maybe I'm paranoid.
I can't remember haw many flashes are allowed in a group (but I'm sure it's multiples) and the 550ex will work with 3 groups (3 ratios / power outputs).
So off the top of my head you can set the output of groups A, B and C (the Master is in group A). I think you set the ratio of A
B and C) then set an EC on C to vary it from B.
