Some detest his work and question his morality but I love his work and am deeply jealous of his work:bang:
Even after all these years it still makes me laugh every time I see it.
Any thoughts folks?

:agree: I've never been able to understand why anyone would pay thousands for some of his work.

I know what you mean Pete, some of it is very 'out there'. The work I like is the commentary on Brits abroad in the Spanish resorts for example, or the tat we buy and sell at car boot sales. All in garish polarised and saturated colours. It's the bold look at Englsih life I enjoy most, I think.

I saw some of his work at the Tate once. Apparently he used on board flash. I'm a very technical must get everything perfect photographer. I have to get the best from a scene. What he does is very odd, and I don't understand it. I must admit I haven't seen all of his work and wouldn't mind if someone could post what they think are his great shots.

Will post some up Pete when time permits.

You're not wrong Lady Lens, it seems he is loved and loathed in equal measure.

not being offensive Pete i dont think you'll really get it, you may understand it eventually, i'm not saying i'm clever anything so pompous but i spent some time looking at his work there is a lot of irony & humour in his work. Thers an instict, a feel, a look that comes across.

Only way i can expain it using your own work, you see a scene, a building you try to take a perfect shot, right lens, correct apeture, DOF, straight edges, horizons, looking for symmetry & pleasing asthetics. You then take that shot take out imperfections, technically enhance image usually HDR to best of your ability, you look try to feel the perfect shot with enhancements. Nothing wrong with that as i do admire your work.

The opposite end of scale would be Urban photographers who take old buildings, derelict sites, concrete slabs and find beauty in the chaos, the mess and doesn't care if shot is perfect in focus, dark etc it would be a feel an instict to make those kinds of shots look good.

ps a lot is really a slap in the face of the commercial world magazines etc that is really ironic on its own that his work is so commercial

No offense taken :) I don't yet see that in his work, but I haven't look at it to a huge degree.

Exactly yeah. Most of the time I do try to find things that make me go wow and then make others go wow when they see my photo. Its my way of using the medium to let people see things as I did.

I love people who do this. I subscribe to a few photoblogs that do this style, and I also do it myself. I've always found myself to be a balanced person. So as much as I'm about the feel of a photo it has to be technically perfect too. In that sense I'm limited by both sides. There are people out there who take stunning photos that are completely wrong, yet stunning. I can't think like that, often. I find if I use my Lomo camera, where I know that all the rules are thrown out and the point is to not think, then I can just enjoy taking photos.

for last few weeks i've been trying to get better skills with camera using manual a lot which ment i've been concentrating more on camera. Last few day i've stuck camera on AV just took shoots i liked & forgot about technical bit. tried stupid angles didnt worry about being perfect & really just enjoyed taking pictures. Some are on flickr but people who have seen them actually liked shoots not for being technically brilliant just cos they liked them

now if i could only combine the 2
