Marks 52 - Week 26 Night

Right.:naughty: The 1st thing i will say is well done on the idea:thumbs:
You did well on that. Now down to the shot itself.

1st
Is there a reason you never had the bottom of the bar at the bottom of the shot I dont feel the little bit of space there does anything to help only distract.
2nd
Background as you have stated would have made this look 30% better imho just keeping the same colour / style all the way would have been the way to go imho

I know this all sounds negative .And i am sorry for that. But i like you mark:thumbs:

Ahh I like you to Dave

Thanks for the crit, in answer to your question, I never thought not to give it some space at the bottom of the shot. Will have a look at that thanks:thumbs:

I will reshoot this with a better b/g.

Mark:thumbs:

I love dark chocolate, and this shot is a nice clear image of one of my favourite things!!

The framing etc is not perfect, but the overall effect works IMHO. Well done

Had another crack at it.....better or worse?

Mark:thumbs:

I think the second is better as the background spoiled the first but I'm not sure about the DOF in either to be honest

I think somewhere between the two would be best so "Dark . Noir" is in focus and the blur starts just below 85% cocoa.

I prefer this shot BUT its nowhere near as sharp as the last one.

The Dark noir needs to be pin sharp for me anyway..

sorry mate i can lie if you want:D

md:thumbs:

ok so somewhere in between, practice practice practice.... a good excuse for more chocolate:naughty:. Thanks for the feedback folks.

The second is better for me, great attitude shown by accepting the crit and reshooting it.

Thanks Hyster.

I'm here to learn and would much rather have the faults pointed out.

Second is definitely the better composition and background but nothing in it looks in focus to me, which is a bit odd given that no one else has commented on that

No your right the focus is off. I used a close up filter on the second shot which has detracted from the IQ I think. :shake:
Live and learn:)

That's a great idea...now I'm going to be the only one to say it...I can tell...but the first one has got to be the better one...ok so the background is a bit of a distraction, but the focus is absolutely spot on... the second one is way to much oof for my taste.

Sorry, but it's was and still is a great idea...

Thanks Spartacus. There's a good shot in there somewhere, I just haven't quite found it yet!

How the hell have I missed your last few shots! Arrrgh sorry!!!

So yet more catching up :)

Right:

Duo: Lovely instruments - lovely image and it meets the theme to a tee :) Takes my mind a second to get to grips with the orientation as the flutes appear unsupported but to me that just adds to the shot

Longing: Awww super shot, bless him! Sharp, colourful pic!

Dark: Second one for me - the dof gives the image depth and character!

And I'm salivating :)

Very good trio of shots and apologies for getting behind in my comments! :bang: :)

No1 for me Mark
Jon

Thanks John and no need to apologise, it's hard keeping up with everyones efforts, you think you've done them all and realise you've missed a couple:bang:

md

Seen it, thanks. Feel free to post it if you want:thumbs:

No1 for me Mark
Jon

Thanks Jon:thumbs:.

Well done for having another go at this one - that's something I always find really hard to get my head round!

There's no 'right' or 'wrong' - but my preference is for the dof of the first one but I do like the way the second one is positioned right at the bottom edge of the shot. (Sorry, that's a bit rambly, hope it makes sense). So, I'm voting for a combination of the 2 shots, both of which are a good take on a very difficult theme.

What beats me - how did you manage to keep the choc for that long? :)

Jean

Thanks Jean and I couldn't agree more. I still have some left, it's very rich you can't eat much in one go:lol:

Another week flies by and yet another last minute photograph. I must get more organised:bonk:.

Carrying on the food related theme to my 52 I decided on a simple meal. So here it is, Sunday Breakfast...mmmmmm (looks for drooling emocation)

Things I've learned:

1) if you have an idea for a shot get done rather than waiting for the last day when you're really busy.

2) If you shooting food it's best not to be hungry

3) If you're back up shot needs props, it's not much good if you haven't got them, see 1.

Thanks

Mark:thumbs:

Yes that's another great idea from you...and it looks damn good enough to eat...

brilliant lighting...:woot:

Loving this shot from you this week...

thanks Spartacus, it was good too.

Great shot Mark, very well done.

Line above the egg is a little distracting but otherwise excellent stuff.

Well done Mark. It's not easy to shoot food (especially when hungry!) and this looks, well, .... good enough to eat. :D A simple, but delicious meal. :)

I love the dark background, but to be very picky, wonder if you should have cropped just a little off the top - there seems to be quite a bit of empty space. Just a thought. :)

I totally relate to your lessons learned this week. I left it too late to do anything half as well thought-out as this. :bonk:

Jean

Well done Mark, that's a great shot, and indeed looks very tasty... I'm hungry and could do with one of those right about now.

oooh tasty looking...

I think the lighting is excellent and you have captured the subject itself beautifully. The only issue I have is with the composition - I do think there is too much empty space at the top and the egg/bread look cramped at the bottom which is a shame because they really do look scrummy! Also a teeny distracting white line above the egg on the left.

I feel your pain with point three... sods law says the only idea you have will involve a prop that you don't have!

Thank you, the line is the rim of my cup of tea, which I missed in my rush to post in time:bang:

Thank you, possibly right about the crop, I'll have a play:thumbs:

come on...spill the "egg"...how did you light it

One light to the right of the subject, with a black reflector behind to catch the spill.

I'd just like to say a big thanks to everyone, especially over the last two weeks, I really appreciate the honest comments and suggestions for improvement, which I intend to learn from. :thankyou::thumbs:

Better?

I definitely prefer the proportions of the 2nd shot Mark. Cracking shot :D Seriously though I really like it :clap:

And as for leaving shots until the last day is concerned, I thought that was normal   then I too find out the light's not right or I need something else or Reg has eaten the chocolate :nono:

Love the second crop - a definate improvement

Thank you both, I have to improve on my composition, I get into a process where everything is 6x4 or a multiplication of it. Sometimes square or other crops would work better.

2nd one for me - but what a great interpretation, well shot and well lit!

Thats a corker! :D

Ok so I am going to be totally controversial in that I like the negative space in the first shot, as it creates a heightened focus on the subject (in my opinion) I agree that the line did distract a little, but is easy enough to take out in PS.

I absolutely love this shot and is the second one this week that I would buy and have hanging in my house.

I love the lighting, but love the shadows more. The clarity on the bread and the yolk running down the eggcup are excellent.

Super

Wow a sale......, what size, canvas or paper, mounted or not...:naughty::thumbs:

Thank you for your very kind words!

Another week devoid of ideas, never mind. I'm not sure about this, it fits the theme, but I've struggled to process it in a style I'm truly happy with. :|

It also looks a bit dark on uploading. :bang:

Playing a little catch up here.

Simple, terrific shot, right on the money.

Linear, on theme, but like you say, appears very underexposed to me.
