Evening folks,
I am thinking about going to the Manchester Pride Parade tomorrow for some photo ops, would like to know what place/section would be the best for good views? One of the girls at work was saying that the city centre will be packed so it would be difficult to use a DSLR,should be ok for a compact.Would appreciate any suggestions, will keep my fingers crossed for some decent weather.

Why would it be difficult to use a DSLR if it's busy? Should be fine...

I would definately go myself but i'm not back in Manchester until 1st Sept...really good photo op though, Pride Parades are always full of colour and action.

Hi 8utters,
Would you recommend any specific location for good views?

go to canal street, so obvious :) Im going there too, not to photograph but to party! ha

Yeah Canal Street is a good location definately.

A good spot will be along Deansgate near the Hilton (if the parade is that far down Deansgate), you could get some great shots with the HUGE Hilton as a backdrop.

Also try and get near the big wheel (again, not sure if the parade will be near/next to it) near The Printworks.

I don't know the route so not sure on many good spots for photos.

I dont want to buy a ticket to get into the village plus it'll be too crowded

you dont need to buy a ticket. Gay pride = free :)

According to the website, its £15 for sat to get into that area

Well it always say that, but over nearly over 30 times I went to gay prides for free. It won't hurt you to try :)

Cheers 8utters
this is the route, any suggestions for good spots?
http://www.manchesterpride.com/media/2008/Manchester_Pride_Parade_Route_2008.pdf

The start point is basically next to the Hilton, so i'd start there and get some shots.

Then the Great Northern Square is probably a good 2nd spot, Deansgate is just shops really.

After that i'd just wander along the route shooting as you go. Albert Square will be a very good spot, so definately go there. It will probably be one of the busiest and most active places along the parade route (except perhaps near Canal Street).

From there Canal Street will be worth checking out too, loads of action there :)

I wish I was in Manchester for it, really wanna go :(

The parade will be starting by the Science and Industry Museum, proceeding onto Deansgate and along to St Annes Street, down Cross Street to the town hall then down Princess Street to Whitworth Street, having been caught up in it for the last 3 years....keep well away from Canal Street!!! You won't be able to move and if you don't get a good position you're in trouble!! I'd recommend somewhere along Deansgate, possibly around Quay Street so you have the Grt Northern/Hilton as a backdrop??

Once its passed (and it takes a while!) then possibly head over towards Canal Street...you should catch it arriving as the tail of the parade passes Quay Street, that is if you haven't got enough shots already!

I was meant to be going, but been offered a wedding to do, and I need the money lol!!

"keep well away from Canal Street!!!" Lmao... I see you're useless. :baby:

Lol...I hasten to add I wasn't there in a photographic capacity, I was merely trying to return home!! It'd have been quicker for me to get from Victoria to Oxford Road walking round the ring road then going direct! It took me an hour and 45 mins to do whats normally a 15-20 min walk

Whatever you do, don't have a brown handkerchief hanging out of your back pocket :shake:

'Nuff said

Cheers for the responses folks,
Will be going to the Parade with my expectant wife,so dont think it's feasible to keep changing locations constantly. Will probably stick to one or two locations and stay away from very crowded spots.
Thank you once again to everyone who has helped out

My eldest is escorting my niece and her girlfriend down there tonight i would have loved to have gone, for the photos what an opportunity, and i believe the parade organisers are more than willing to have a tog present not like some events you go to clicking away but had another engagement a 50th, but my niece says she has bought tickets for the whole weekend ? i will ask her tomorrow about how many events she is going to, my niece comes from a very small town down south, so my son is showing her and her girlfriend and another freind around the city, he has a ticket also, they may not be back while morning, and hungover at that, so it may be after dinner before i get any details, i am positive there is a web site with all the info on ?? i have worked in the gay village in fact in all parts of the north west at all times with my job, and the village is one of the pleasantest, but he will watch out for them especially when leaving and entering the city center for a cab home, all kinds of undesirables knocking about, and the girls are not used to big city life,..

Some areas are ticket only >>>>>

happy pill awaits:):)

Regards Mark.

@ kendun

You'll have no problem with a DSLR - there is a thread from whiteflyer from Mcr Pride last year, but he's deleted all his images. They were cool though.

Have fun - and post your pics

I'm not being entirely serious ;)

Yeah, but you start off a train of posts that have nothing to do with the topic and it ends up with people on here taking offence.

Did it occur to you that there may be gay members on here reading your puerile comment?

I did not wish to cause offense

My sincerest apologies

I do have friends who are gay :)

Ok - I'll drop it. I wasn't impressed with you're opening gambit on the Liverpool post either.

Back to subject under discussion ...

I worked in Liverpool for a number of years and I grew to love its inhabitants

I was simply poking fun ;)

Friends? :)

Looks like the weather's going to be decent, the BBC site says sunny intervals.Planning to be there by 1PM to get a nice spot.
I am a newbie so dont know whether I'll upload the photos onto this thread purely because my photos are still c...p in terms of the exposure, composition etc.Today's more of a learning experience for me.
Cheers

Sorry I deleted the images, I had a big clear out a while ago.

Anywhere along the route will be fine for photos, but it does break up a little very close to the village.

There are no problems with a dSLR in Manchester but without a photo/press pass you'll have to stay behind the barriers during the parade.

Again they have the ring of steel round the village so you'll have to pay to get in £15 for a single day I think. Inside the village will be VERY crowded, and again if you want to take shots of act on the main stage it's crushed at the front or a pass for the press pit.

I was there last night for the media launch, which was a nice free wine and food affair  , the togs were a little upset that they are sticking to the 3 song and your out rule on the main stage for EVERY act. :(

I'll be shooting along the route and in the village with my Talk Photography neck strap so give us a shout if you spot me.

Really you should have got yourself one of theses :lol::lol:

Hi whiteflyer,
Your photo's quite sharp, will give you a shout if I do see you.

I'm off there now

I'm gonna park for free on Regents Retail Park in Salford and walk the rest of the way

So if you spot a bloke wearing blue jeans, brown tee-shirt, sunglasses, and carrying a black man-bag, chances are it'll be me

Toodle-pip!

:)

I made the mistake of taking my wife along

We were amongst the revellers just before the parade was due to start, and my wife freaked out! She said she felt 'uncomfortable'

I, on the other hand, felt very comfortable. But being the dutiful husband, I drove my wife home :(

Oh well, there's always next year
