Hi,

I'm looking to attempt a bit of Macro photography. I've messed about previouslt with Macro filters but I'm thinking of buying a dedicated Macro Lens.

I'm considering a Canon FD mount lens of approx 100mm and buying the relevant FD-EF adapter to fit my 400D.

I know I'll not be able to Auto Focus, but that doesn't worry me too much, I simply want to see how much use I'd get out of it before deciding to purchase a dedicated EF/EF-S macro lens.

My question to you all is...... Is this a good approach? will I get a true macro experience or will IQ be less than I'd get from an EF ?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks

Andrew

Maybe slightly OT, but have you considered a Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro EX?
@Tis a stunning little lens, will do a decent 1:1 shot (although you do need to be VERY close to the subject for this).

Not only that, but doubles up as a wicked portrait lens!

If you want to focus to infinity, you'll need the adapter with an extra lens in, which will result in lower IQ than the FD would have normally, otherwise IMHO the FD optics are as good if not better than the EF range.

Also be aware that you'll ahve to shoot manual and "stop-down" the aperture by hand for each shot.

I had a go with a FD lens and ringflash, results was good, and you can see wether or not the lighting is right

Thanks, I knew I'd need to manually focus, hadn't thought about apeture. yp that will be required too :D

Thanks All, I'll keep an eye out for a 100 FD I think.
