Lynton's 52 for 2010 - Week 29 "Grace"

Lynton, it's a wonderful photo. Grandad must be very proud. It really fits the theme so well - people from both ends of the age spectrum. You have made a really good job of the black and white from that original.

It's certainly a lovely photo. Baby looks a little dark, especially the eyes, but the look on her face is priceless. Fantastic job in PP to black out the background. Someone would have to look very closely to tell.

Thanks for both your comments - very encouraging........... first thing Grandad Bob asked when wife turned up and said "here's something you might like Bob" was "how much does he want for it?" - well zilch/nada/£0.00 given that he cut and fitted all our kitchen worktops for us for nada - but encouraging as in someone someday will be willing to pay for something I turn out.........

more specifically to Darren - the baby's expression and the sticking out tongue caught me with this one, and Mrs S was watching casualty or some other drivel Holby enders come dancing on icedale in emmerstreet........ so I started to play....... have since learnt if I stand looking down on my monitor, its different to looking at it, or looking up at it......... agree it's a tad dark, but I have always gone for darker deeper stuff.... and I have always been a black and white guy..... in pretty much everything...maybe I should ask the mods to call me "Binaryman!"........ if you want to have a play and show me your version of it, will happily send you the orig / or my edit........ wouild be interesting to see other peoples interpretations and what would be good to them...........

As for week 8 - Chris - good pun,,

Squawk - thanks very much for your comments on week 7. Greatly appreciated.. just trying to find a trumptet to blow now!!!......... and as for what made my cogs whurr for this pic - my first thought was of a pic that ryan (ryanyboy took and put up of here of the clock in peterborough(?) cathedral - a bit of an abstract on cogs in the clocktower, made me then think of this watch (I have a few) Extra cookies on order as are chocolate hobnobs for tea in bed in the morning........ maybe £4 delivery for a 70p pack of biscuits is extravagant............

Damien - get a proper camera with some decent glass, and you can aspire to such images! - you know i am ripping the p*** mate!

I will do a sharp one, just to compare........... but not tonight - still raining, and I melt if I go outside in the dark!

Superb image for People Lynton, spot on. Mechanical, It works well, and love the details. The only thing... I'd like to see more of it and less outside the DOF. I know you had lighting issues and understand why you took it like that... hell macro has sod all DOF even with silly aperture settings...

watch2.jpg

Tripod out and 10 seconds exposure - so the second hand has disappeared and a bit of blur on some of the cogs.

Damien - yeah you're right........

Here's version 3 which is going to be my entry for the week.........

Too shallow a DOF in 1.
Too grey in 2.

watch3.jpg

wow love the retake, the blacks really punch out at you, i love watches like that, always fancied taking one apart to see if i could put it back together again even though i know i would destroy it :)

Richard - thanks very much for your comments. Don't know if I would fancy such a task, looking at it would need some very delicate tweezers and steady hands. The "big" cog near the VII is about 6mm in diameter.

Thanks tracer......

wow love the retake, the blacks really punch out at you

As much at in pains me to admit it :gag:, you were correct Damien. :bang:

Great third image for your mechanical week really makes the grade :thumbs:did you make and use your home made light box for your shot, you don't waste any time getting your pictures in on time, pun intended :)

Course I'm right!! Still think my edit was better!!!!

Mods I demand respectfully request a "Get back in your box" Smiley!

any news of week 9 yet? Itching here!

Third time's a charm. I love watches like this and you've caught the detail beautifully

Works for me, excellent take on the theme Lynton and wonderful details.

Play. aka Ar$eing around.

Self portrait this week - me and one of my other great loves - Golf - but not playing it as such in this shot - more playing around bored.......... It's the kind of thing I do on the tee, whilst waiting for the guys in front to clear - keeps the mind on the game..... (Interestingly a Mr E. T. Woods does this and whilst as a junior in the US Amateur, some guy in the crowd offered him a bet of $1 a bounce over/under 100 - I.e. 70 bounces and Tigs owed $30....... Tiger voluntarily stopped on 184)

And then playing around in photoshop with some selective colouring.

(I'm the slim one on the right as you look at the pic - the guy with the full head of long hair!)

C&C as always welcome.

A nicely exposed image there Lynton.
I know some people don't like selective colouring but I think it works in this image. The head covers and your sunglasses really pop with this processing.
I like the low perspective you have composed this image with.
All round good job:thumbs:
It fits the theme and as a fellow golfer appeals to me.
Cheers
Iain

I quite like this, but I'm not sure about the selective colouring. I think it might look better in full B&W.

The problem is that I'm drawn to the blob of colur (emu head-cover?) and I can't really tell what it is because the brolly handle is in the way.

Full B&W (or full colour) would let the viewer look at the actions in the scene, which is you bouncing a ball on a wedge rather than away from it to the emu (if that's what it is).

Just my humble opinion though!!

Ian.

An interesting trick and playing around time. It's worked well for the theme, I like it. I agree with Ian though... (I'm gonna have to try and get my comments in earlier...;)) I think the colour pop of the emu is distracting from the action and play going on.

Cheers for the comments Iain and Ian,

I too am not a great fan of selective colouring in general, but thought i would have a play with it on this one.

Ian - good point about the sodding umbrella handle obscuring the emu headcover.:bang:

Here's a B&W - let me know what you think.

playbw800.jpg

Nice shot - it works really well - I am not a big fan of black and white so the added colour is a bonus for me : )

What's the full colour like? The selective looks horrible in my eyes, like you've let someone loose with the felt tips (sorry) :D B&W is a lot better but just lacks some punch. Great angle you've used though and the composition overall works to a tee ;)

Nice shot, mate. I used to do this whilst waiting on the tee too. Can you catch the ball and flip it between your legs too. ;) I guess the important question is can you play??

For me selective colouring very rarely works, so no offence intended when I say I prefer the B+W version.....

I prefer the B+W version! :)

Best thing about it is the angle of the shot, gorillapod by any chance?!

Just catching up on your 52 Lynton, some good work going on here. I love the longer exposure mechanical, some great detail there. Play is a good shot, im a bit torn on the version though. The selective colouring doesnt work for me. Mono is better but as a few have mentioned above i'd like to see a colour shot to decide.

Thanks all for your comments so far - they are much appreciated, and no need to apologise for saying "I don't like it because of x" - to me, that' 10,000 times better than a "nice pic" and leaving at that.... Cue Damien (or other quick witted Tp'er) to respond with "nice pic!"

I quite agree about the selective colouring - it can work occasionally if done subtly in the right context - it doesn't really work in the shot, but for me, an extra angle on play...... as in playing around in photoshop. Love the analogy of getting the felt tips out though!

Here's the full colour that some of you have asked for.....

golfballbounce.jpg

Now confession time.

Originally took this back in October for my Photography course, where movement was the topic for the week - hence the blurred golf ball..... always intended to convert this to a B&W, as you can see I am wearing Jeans (which is a no-no on any self respecting golf course.) B&W makes it less obvious wearing jeans.

It's also obvious from the plants that were in parent's back garden (better fences and background than mine!) - that it wasn't shot this week.

I thought about doing something similar for this weeks play and rather than recreate this, thought ah will use what I already have.....

23rd man - Yes, I can! Though I think at the moment I should concentrate more on my short game than bouncing balls on wedges....... Do you still pop into Golfmagic at all?

Damien - Yep Gorillapod - quite lucky with the location though as theres about a 1ft drop to patio from the lawn where I had the camera - so could create the angle quite easily. Still not 100% sure I would wrap the gripped K20D and a heavy lens round a tree using a gorillapod..... maybe I am just a chicken. Used IR remote to shoot with a 2 or 3 second delay.

Chris/Clud17 - thanks for taking a look, and let me know what you thik to the colour version.

Really good shot, I prefer the full B&W.
Also your final shot for mechanical is simply brilliant

Loads of catching up for me to do on your thread, Lynton. Nearly 3 weeks without a computer has been a 'mare. :)

Speed: Fantastic! That engine looks sleek, powerful and very speedy. I like the framing and it was definitely worth feeling like an anorak for!

Present: My first thought was - my registers were never that neat when I was teaching (although laterly on we had electronic registers, called EARS!), then I read your words and realised it was a 'model' version. :) An excellent take on the theme, and a very successful use of dof. :)

People: This is truly gorgeous - no wonder grand-dad was pleased with it! The little girl's expression is priceless - and she's young enough to get away with sticking her tongue out at the photographer. :D Definitely a shot to treasure - and I love the processing, too.

Mechanical: It was very good of you to take 3 versions of this! I was quite happy with the first and particularly liked the motion blur on the second hand. The final version is excellent, too, although in a quite different way. In the first one I interpreted the shallow dof and suggesting the mysteries of time and mechanics, whereas the final version suggests precision and state-of-the-art materials. A good week!

Play: Definitely the black and white version for me. You certainly captured the motion blur with the ball (very clever, especially in a sp!) and the activity fits the 'Play' theme to a Tee! (Sorry, couldn't stop myself on that one!) ;)

Jean

Yep, it's the B&W version of play for me Lynton, love the motion in the ball - spot on. Seeing as I have to be picky - either a larger aperture to blur out the background, or some lens blur in photoshop to make you stand out from the fence would just about do it :)

Probably going to have to revisit this one by the end of the week.

Have shedloads of great ideas from my A level Chemistry days, but alas no access to lots of chemicals or laboratories!

So a bit of homemade Chemistry - the cleaning powers of Coke.

coke.jpg

Aim

To demonstrate the corrosive powers of Coke.

Apparatus

Can of Coke - Full fat. Glass. Bulldog clips. String. Oxidised 2p coins.

Method.

Attach coins to bulldog clips and suspend in the glass. Fill glass with Coke until coins 1/2 to 2/3 submerged in Coke. Leave for a n hour.

Results.

Submerged parts of coins were cleaned by the coke.

Conclusions.

You can clean dirty coins with Coke. If it does this to a 2p coin, what does it do to your teeth?

Hi Lynton: For me the B&W version of Play works much better. But then I like B&W!

I shouldn't have sneaked a look at Chemistry until mine was done, because I think the lab write up is inspired.

Ian.

Great idea for chemistry, demonstrates the powers of coke very well indeed.

like others, not sure about the golf shot, the selective isnt working but cant really decide on colour or mono, so maybe a desaturatd colour might the other option. Either way, i consider anyone that does self portraits a hero

Cracking idea, along with the mini experiment write up!

Cheers mate. Last time I had to do one of those I had to draw the apparatus. Was a bit tongue in cheek schoolboy style........

Ian - Thanks - looking forward to seeing some of the other 52's from this week.........Chemistry - well can be so many things really......

Yv - yeah the selective colouring is pants! I prefer the B&W... can't be botherered with a 4th version..........

Noooooooooooooooo.... accidentally clicked. Not looking not looking.

Can we have a ban on posting new images before the end of the week please :D

B&W works much better on Play Lynton...

Chemistry... :D.. I remember doing a similar experiment... Scarily corrosive stuff is Coke...

I think the shot shows the experiment clearly... the pole.. looks like you've poured the coke over it in 2, then looks twisted in 3... that works well with the intent of the qualities of the drink ;)... I think it works, but the edge of the table in the first couple of shots is kinda distracting...

The content of the link below wouldn't have anything to do with you and your big northern mate Damien would it Lynton?:D

23rd man - Yes, I can! Though I think at the moment I should concentrate more on my short game than bouncing balls on wedges....... Do you still pop into Golfmagic at all?

No, not anymore, mate. I have been getting the itch a little though so might go for 9 holes tommorow if I get the chance.
