Low fat food, I don't want it but it's all they sell.

I don't think I ever eat low fat anything. Basically, there's no fat in sugar. Sugar is cheap and generally tastes pretty nice. Fat sounds like overweight. You can see how these marketing types think.

Or not getting out with their camera enough, and not walking their dog if they have one. I eat far too much, and all the wrong things. I can have a big breakfast, large lunch massive evening meal and supper. Oh and sweets etc, not forgetting generous helpings of cake. Friends and family always comment on the amount I eat, I am 5ft 8 in and weigh 12 stone 8lb sorry to our young members, don't know what that is in new money. I have eaten like that for as long as I can remember, and my weight has been the same since being an adult. I have always had dogs, and take the dog for three brisk walks a day, even if it's raining.

If I was not mobile for some reason and I could not exercise, I would definitely cut down and eat more healthy. So being physically fit, I will continue to eat like a pig :D

A lot of that is probably to do with genetics and how your body reacts to its insulin. There are simply some people who are 'naturally' skinny irregardless of what they consume.

However sugar does make a lot of people fat, and is now starting to be seen as one of the root causes of the rising obesity problem.

no, fat makes people fat.

no, fat makes people fat.

Ooooo this is going to get really bad, really fast....... :)

I thought current dietary thinking was

1. Fat kills you.
2. Sugar makes you fat which kills you.
3. Protein is entirely safe to eat and must be scoffed at every possible occasion. Also, it kills you.
4. Let's not even talk about fibre.
5. Not eating kills you.

Sugar can make people fat.
Fat can make people fat.
Being a lazy sod can make people fat.
Certain medical conditions or medications can make people fat.
Smoking can cause cancer
Trying to cross a busy motorway can result in you being hit by a moving vehicle.

Not "does". Not "will".
Can.....May.
But also may not.

There, that saves about 8 pages of popcorn and pi55ing contests.

Lol, a common misconception!

As I mentioned in my other thread, I've increased my fat consumption to 75% of my daily intake and lost 3 stone in 4 months. Fat in itself does not make people fat, quite the opposite.

no fat makes you fat, you don't store massive amounts of carbohydates.

you've reduced your carbohydrate level to reduce insulin levels thus making fat metabolism the go to method for ATP sythesis. Just increasing your fat intake won't do s*** on its own. If you are loosing weight then you are taking in less calories than you use hence you are loosing weight. You'll also be making lots of ketones, have floaty poos, and a whole host of other things. just wait till you've lost the fat you want and you have to increase the fat intake in order to stay the same weight.

I don't want to seem like a smug b*****d here but I'm willing to bet only one of us has science publications in the field of fatty acid metabolism?

nope, only point 5 is correct

Well what are the chances, I've just finished my last thesis on the very same thing.....

Lol I jest, obviously, but in all seriousness for me high fat consumption works, doesn't make me fat, and make me feel physically and mentally much better. So I'm gonna keep doing it!

And my poos are fine.... :D

When I was 18 I could eat as much as I wanted and never moved from 9 stone 7 pounds. I'm about 14 stone now and have to be very careful with what I eat.

but your body is very good at converting it into fat.

I wish I hadn't started reading this a lunch time!
I generally thought lack of exercise was the worse problem of all, whatever fuel you're shovelling in, if it isn't being used up it can't be good for you?

Just stuck a couple of Asda own Burgers in the oven, WOW the amount of fat that came off them. I am off setting this with oven chips that I sprinkled with Cajun Spice, and a lovely salad. Oh and I made my own mayonnaise. We are forgoing pudding, only because I have not made any ;)

Yeah that was my point. A while ago advertisers learned that "fat" sounds like, well, "fat" so people might not want to eat it. So they invented "lower fat"*, "low fat" and "fat free" but often what they do is stuff them with sugar because a kilo bag of sugar is fat free. It's a matter of holy war whether fat or carbs are better or worse for you :)

* fun fact. "Reduced fat" cheddar cheese is generally 20 - 30% fat. It's actually 1/4 - 1/3 as much fat as there is in butter. Which is quite a lot considering it's a "health" product. And even more for a product that IIRC tastes almost exactly like soap.

Some of the reduced fat cheese isn't too bad tasting and the reduction in the fat %age means I can eat more of it! ;)

Name signing in the snow.

I have a problem finding full fat cottage cheese (which I quite like) but no problem with getting disgusting tasteless watery low fat ones in all sorts of "flavours" YUK!

...and low fat just means they put more sugar in biscuits...

I don't usually put butter on bread these days, possibly a tiny bit of garlic butter when on holiday but not on a day to day sarnie basis. Good bread and a good filling makes it redundant.

Had the same problem today in Tesco you used to be able to get ones with pineapple and chive full fat. Not anymore the only full fat one they had was the value range will give it a try but will have to try somewhere else.

The value stuff isn't actually too bad and is a decent base to add your own bits n pieces to.

I often wonder why they bother making low fat cottage cheese. The regular stuff is about 4% fat which classes it as a "low fat" food and it's not like anybody would eat enough of it to get a decent amount of fat anyway.

I know it's stupid I don't buy anything low fat anymore I've just cut out the cakes and biscuits and have more or less cut out carbs other than 1 day a week. I just try to eat protein with salad or veg and have snack in between of either full fat cheese, almonds, blueberries, cottage cheese or peanut butter.

I sometimes wonder what the criterion is for something to be described as "Low Fat". I would have said that 4% was pretty low fat as it is - maybe the marketing department simply lob the Low Fat label onto the regular stuff and charge a premium for it or am I being too cynical?

Nope, the low fat ones are 0.5% and disgusting, the 5% one is fine.

Makes you wonder why folks bother with skimmed milk, which is basically white water.

Never understood the point of skimmed milk, it's just like water. We use semi skimmed but at least it looks and tastes like milk :) .

There isn't one.

I tried the Greek style yogurt today, it's maybe a tad thicker but hardly and it tastes about the same as the stuff I used to get.

I always thought you were in the north east, sorry  :$

We seem to have a Sainsburys on every corner up here ;)

Why not ask in your Asda if they can't start ordering the Yeo Valley or Collective Dairy yoghurts, both are really thick and creamy.

I'll drink semi skimmed at a push if no skimmed is available, but "normal" milk just tastes rank. Like fat it makes me gag.
