Low Carb High Fat

This not a diet that appeals to me, but I'm not averse to cribbing a decent recipe wherever I find one ;)

If you're doing the cauliflower rice, there are a few recipes that also use cauliflower to make a pizza base. You'll find them on some of the GF and paleo diet websites - there's one at http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2014/05/cauliflower-crust-pizza.html

Interesting indeed. I went hard on a low carb, high protein diet this year while marathon training. But I felt like crap most of the time, and I'm glad I'm done. (Gained 6kg since the race too!)

Want to try something like this as some experienced distance runners are saying that teaching your body to convert fat into energy more efficiently is the best approach. Ie. get off the reliance on carbs, as you can store more fat than glycogen.

Given that about a year has passed, is anyone willing to say how things are going with this weight loss regime?

I've never been an advocate of dieting, preferring instead the "eat less / exercise more" theory

I know it's a very individual process, but I wonder do people keep to the low carb / high fat diet and is is good long term?

Thanks, Kevin

I'll bite :)

I maintained my LCHF and lost over 4st in the end, went from a tight 38" trouser to being 32" now which i'd not been since my teens. Moved away from a strict LCHF when i went below 12st a few times as i didn't want to lose any more and the weight was still coming off over time (much slower rate obviously). Started to lift at home and built up decent tone / size in my upper body and keep on top of lifting every other day for 15 / 30mins. Goal is maintaining an "athletic aesthetic" vs building mass / getting big muscles as it doesn't appeal. I'd say these days i'm on a moderate carbs high fat lifestyle. Still have bulletproof coffees, a few rashers of bacon and a few sausages too, every morning! But not been in ketosis for a long time now though. Have pizzas once a week and chips a couple of times a week with something meat based and plenty of broccoli plus other veg / salads. Have totally sworn off rice, wheat (bread, crumpets, bagels, etc), milk and a few other things.

Couldn't be happier and it's nice being toned up and people noticing my work / physique :)

Thanks for the response [emoji3]

Pleased to hear it has worked for you and especially that it's where you want to be.

Personally I am not keen on the sausages / bacon idea, much less coffee with coconut oil, but it seems to work for you and it proves to be the case that weight loss requires a change of lifestyle to work long term [emoji3]

The sausages / bacon is just because i can't get on with anything else for breakfast and i've tried just the coffee but it doesn't work for me alone. The go to seems to be omelettes but i can't stand them so stuck with what i like :)

I'd be interested to know what your cholesterol levels are like.

So would i! I *plan* on getting an mot at the drs as i've not had one in a while. My BP is in a healthy range but yes cholesterol is in the back of my mind.

I eat and drink (and smoke) what I like when I like, consequently I'm fat. My better half is a keep fit fanatic careful what she eats and excercises every day. One of us has normal BP and normal cholesterol. To my wife's annoyance and amazement its not her. I suspect a lot is to do with genes.

I worked with 2 guys. One was a super fit fell runner. The other was grossly obese, devoured all manner of fatty foods, and moved as little as he could manage. Our employer arranged for a free cholesterol test for anyone who wanted to take one. The obese guy had a low cholesterol and the fit chap had extremely high cholesterol and was hospitalised.

Probably is a genetic factor in some cases, but most times it is probably largely to do with lifestyle.

There are freak results in all manner of things and many folk in bad shape tend to hang on to such possibilities to justify not addressing their own bad habits.

I'm still doing the low carb highish fat diet although daily carbs have gone up from around 25g a day to about 60-70g. Lots of protein and veggies. Cholesterol count is good, plenty of good cholesterol and very little bad although to be fair I do take a statin. I also have unmedicated low blood pressure. Weight loss has slowed almost stopped but its for my blood sugars that I continue to stay on this diet. Good sugar levels two hours after eating and I no longer take any diabetic medicines.

I seem to remember recently research by a heart specialist who found most of those presenting to hospital with heart attacks did not have high cholesterol. I'm not going to search for it now as I'm on the phone, but that research is part of the reason fat is no longer viewed as the evil it was.
