Missing out on what exactly?currently i use a 5DMIII and i enjoy using it, but every time i see a shot with a D810 i think im missing out. so im just wondering has any one done anything similar?
Missing out on what exactly?
fwiw I nearly went the other way, i.e. from a D810 to 5DMkIII ... 'twas just a fad though, and nothing really to be gained for me (well other than the superb 135 f2).
The Nikon will handle completely differently to the Canon, the buttons and wheels (well wheel in the case of Canon) are in different places, about the only thing common is you put a lens on the front and the shutter release button! Both are hugely competent cameras and in my case the limiting factor is me, not the equipment. Unless there is something specifically that you need or want a D810 for that cannot be done as well with a 5DMkIII I wouldn't bother. Of course if you just fancy a change then go for it![]()

Well the D810 will edge the 5DMkIII when using it for landscapes. BUT edge it is the key phrase. I could take equally good, or bad depending on your opinion, landscapes with your 5DMkIII or my D810 any differences would be minor and with the proper craft, you would never be able to tell them apart. If your main focus are landscapes and you want more resolution (well megapixels) then one of the Canon 5DS or 5DS R may be worth looking at, I have seen some excellent results using these, but again, nothing that would cause me to change. Of course, there is always medium format (digital or analogue
).
Not sure how many lenses and what types you have, but that is always a consideration in terms of the cost of the change (it isn't an upgrade really). Nikon doesn't really have any lenses at the typical landscape range that Canon doesn't (the 14-24 maybe but it is a specialised beast and needs uber expensive filters etc).
As for AF points, well the D810 still has 51 of the wee beasties
Don't get me wrong I think the D810 is the best camera body I've ever used, but it is far from the limiting factor, my own skillset and knowledge are where the limit is, not the equipment.
Someone might bite me for saying this but you could also get Sony A7R(II) and continue using your lenses![]()
The Nikon equivalent lens, 16-35 f4 VR, is pretty decent and compares well with the Canon one so that would be very much like for like. Don't get me wrong, the D810 is superb - just that often a skills upgrade is a better investmentI use a 16-35F4L IS USM for most of my landscapes' it is intact my only lens that I use 90% of the time. I have a night fifty but that doesn't get use much. So swapping one lens won't affect me.
I've watched a few videos on the 5DS and they say its a big upgrade from the 5Dmiii but not so much of an upgrade from a D810 that's what made me think that I could similar resolution to a 5Ds if I got a D810
medium format is out of my price range![]()

Danny, Where are you based. I may not be too far from you and if you want to try a D810 out I may be able to meet up. I've been meaning to get out to that spot you've shot for a while now but never seem to get round to it....Or it starts to pee down with rain....
I live in halewood on the south edge of Liverpool. That would be good be nice to use one. Which spot we talking about? The jetty?
I've been after a shot of the riverfront. Liver buildings, St John's tower etc from over the water for a while.
I think its from here

Not sure if I'm getting you mixed up with another poster but I'm sure you either started or posted on a thread of the liverpool skyline
yes I did do the skyline a few weeks back. It's an easy place the do and you can park 50meters away from the spot
