Have come to the conclusion that my one and only lens Nikon 16-85mm, doesn't go long enough for what I am looking to photo. I am looking to have a longer focal length for long lens landscape, wildlife (mostly animals more than birding) and possibly occasionally use at the local airshows at Duxford. Lens will be used on a Nikon D7000.

I have had a look about for lens in my budget which is about £500. I have looked at the Nikon 70-300VR, the Tamron 70-300, aswell as bigger lenses like the Nikon 80-400 (non AFS one), Sigma 120-400 but am none the wiser on what to get. I also don't know if waiting a bit longer and saving up some more to get myself something like the Nikon 70-200 f4 and get a 1.4 tele-convertor to go with it to add range when required.

Anyone got any good suggestions on anything they have used and would recommend or to avoid?

One of the 18-200 "super"zooms would get you twice the reach you currently have and should be well under your budget. You might even have enough left for a 70-300 as well. Personally, I'd stick with lenses rather than adding teleconverters to get extra reach unless weight is a real issue.

I'd avoid the old 80-400 VR as the af on that is poor and you'll need decent af for airshows I'd think. Both the 70-300 VR and the latest Tamron 70-300 VC are good lenses with decent af and IQ. The Nikon 70-200 f4 is stellar but best avoiding TC's if poss and the 1.4 tc will only get you out to 280mm. The latest Tamron 150-600 and Sigma 150-600 seem to get good reviews, a little over your current budget but maybe worth a shout. A used siggy 50-500 or 150-500 might work ok too though I'd wait for someone who has used one to come along.

When you say mostly animals are you talking captive or wild?

I have used the old Nikon 70-210mm F4 in the past (owned 3 copies) as it's a cracker.. bought for about £100 and constant F/4 the whole way through..

Get a secondhand 80-200 f2.8.

It'll give you 450mm at the long end AND you'll have a nice bright image too.

I use one on my D700 and it's a great lens.

There's a 70-300 just gone up in the classifieds for £210 (y)

Another vote for the 70-300. I used to have a sigma version and it's a great focal range on a d7000.

A 70-200 is another great lens although I found this to be a little short for some occasions, pair it with a teleconverter and autofocus becomes poor even in good light.

70-300 sounds like the one for you.

My friend has a 50-500 I am going to borrow for a while to see what focal lengths I will need.

So far the 70-300 seems the best bet. Nikon and the Tamron both get good reviews.

Mostly captive but maybe some wild, we have some wild deers nearby. Also things like squirrels etc.
