Hi all,

a friend asked for advice on getting a decent point and shoot compact. I have read tonnes of posts on this and basically I am not sure what to reccommend her.

I have ruled out the Canon G9/G10, Panasonic LX3 etc due to size and cost... and this really will be a simple P&S there is no need for manual controls. Basically they need:
1. easy to use.... full auto
2. cracking image quality
3. budget aroung £100 - £200... nearer the £100 would be great!
4. pocket sized and ...well cool looking!

I have found the following that seem to meet this:
1. Panasonic DMCTZ5 £186
2. Sony DSC-W300 £180
3. Fujifilm FinePix F100fd £163
4. Canon Digital IXUS 970 £184
5. Canon Digital IXUS 90 £163

These are all around £180 and all seem great ... for some unknown reason I am favouring the TZ5 - probably due to the fantastic optical reach. Any advice or opinions? Is there anything cheaper that you'd recommend (Fuji f50d?).

Thanks.

Have a look on Ricoh R8 ;)

Have a look on Ricoh R8 ;)

Thanks - never thought of that. Looks the part as well.. just need to check the other options and reviews more.

Im thinking bout getting this Ricoh by myself for my father:) Canon ixus 960IS is on sale at Amazon here
But as this camera is for a girl, maybe she should have a look on Casio Exilim line...good P&S, looks good and very slim:)

That Canon looks good for the money... but I don't think that the Casio will work. The recommendation is for a girl... the camera for her husband... and I think that he will want something that looks the part but it not too 'fragile'.

Some good options from Bastic - Anyone else?

Replying to my own thread again :cuckoo:

Basically I asked my friend their preference and they like the:
1. Panasonic DMC TZ5 - £183
2. Canon IXUS - £117

Now I personally prefer the Panasonic 10x zoom, but what I am asking now is:
For basic occasional use is the Panasonic (with the extra reach) really worth the extra £66?

I've just bought the Panasonic DMC FX500 and am very happy with it. I paid about £200 for it from Amazon. I did consider the TZ5 but considered it to be too bulky and heavy. As you state that you consider the LX3 to be too big I think that you will have the same issue with the TZ5. I did some test photos with the Panasonic FX500 yesterday if you want to have a look at my thread. http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=1080386&postcount=1 hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.

I just ordered the Canon IXUS 960 IS from Amazon for only £117 -- it's currently selling for around £200 on Jessops online! I know a newer version has just come out (hence the price reduction) but this one has excellent reviews and does everything I need it to do for a P&S. You might consider it, given the price!

Thanks - this is certainly on my list. For the price I think it has to get the vote.

I've got the Sony W300 and it does take some great photos for a super compact and the battery life is pretty good. There is a good review of it here:

Here is a quote:

"The above few paragraphs and images should be enough to show you that I am quite taken with the Sony W300. I've only had it for a short while, and if it wasn't for my disappointment with the Samsung NV24 HD (whose size and features I quite enjoyed, but whose image quality was found unacceptable for my needs) I might not have started to look around and have found the W300. But I'm glad I did, and I'd suggest that if a shirt-pocket sized camera is on your shopping list, the Sony W300 needs to be considered as a serious contender. "
