I'm just finishing off a 35mm roll of Tri-x shot at 800 and I've realised I'm not sure what to soup it in. Its off my new born so I'd rather avoid the dark and gritty look that Rodinal will give so what else can I use that will keep? I generally shoot very little fast film so I mostly just keep rodinal in the house, I've got a pouch of rollei's D74 but I don't know how well it will cope with a pushed film, last time I developed anything in D74 I found you needed to rate the film a little lower so a 400 would only get 320. My 2/3 used gallon of D74 will be long dead and I don't think its worth mixing up another gallon packet for it to go bad under the sink. I don't object to buying something that'll keep though a small bottle would probably be ideal.

Thoughts?

Apparently, Kodak HC-110 lasts pretty much for ever in a collapsible bottle. That's why I bought it.

I also use solution B which is 16ml. to make 500ml. So, very economical.

It seems to give good, consistent results.

Ilfords LC29 may be an option.

I'm still using concentrate that's been open for over a year. Its tea coloured but still perfectly usable. I semi stood some b&w EFKE film yesterday with it and all is good with the negs.

I have a bottle of HC 110 but as yet not got round to using so cant give an opinion i'm afraid.

The Massive Dev chart suggests 8.5 minutes @20c with solution B for Tri-X at 800.

HC-110 and T-Max developer are classic fine grain developers for getting the best out of pushed film. I certainly wouldn't go anywhere near the Rodinal!

EEEP, They're expensive soup! I think I've been spoilt by Rodinal. Cheers guy's I'll look into those.

Dont forget though lc29 can be re used, or at least the solution used to be good for about a week and would dev several films.
There was something mentioned recently about that not now being the case......i'll let you do your own home work on it......

Whats Perceptol like? [Edit] Rubbish for my purposes [/EDIT] Powder for 1L is about £7 so even if it only does this plus another couple it won't be a complete waste. Next Up is Microphen same price.

Expensive but they get the most out of pretty much any film you soup them in - and they are all reusable.

I think if I shot more than 1 or 2 faster films a year I'd probably standardise on something like that, a developer which does a good job on fast and slow films but I like the results I get from rodinal on 25-100 speed films which is what I shoot mostly.
