Lightroom - the dogs perverbials...

I've no clue why anyone would need any software to download images from their camera, its just a storage drive, it shows up in My Computer as such

I wouldn't say I *need* software, but I use Downloader Pro to make my life a heck of alot easier.

I pop my CF card into the reader, and load up Downloader Pro, it asks me for a name of the shoot, and then with one more click, it downloads all the images off my card, into a dated folder with the name of the shoot, in the correct folder on my card, and the filenames are renamed from IMG_0000 etc to my own workflow naming system (date_number etc).

If I wanted to, I could have lightroom monitor my photography drive and then autoimport images as they arrive on the drive.

Nice and automatic :)

Erm...not sure if this is legit but if you know of someone who is a student, they can buy lightroom with an education discount of 60%.;)

Where is the best place to get Lightroom?

Need somewhere local (say Lynn area)

PS: I thought i would ask in this thread instead of making another one

Ahh right, so it cannot be brought from a shop?

i wish i could use lightroom, bu my computer is so damn slow with it running. its quicker for me to use photoshop and bridge.

yes i know i need a new comp...

So just why is it so much better than CS3, how in practical terms does it speed things up ? i have the trial version but never used it, also is there a good tutorial for it ?

If you want to do things such as dodging and burning, etc, then you're out of luck with Lightroom as far as I'm aware. There are no selection tools either, so can't make changes to specific parts of your images.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong)

I started off using CS2 and bridge, and I set up quite a good system for processing my shots. Then along came LR with some very nice tools and gizmos; so I gave it a try.
I have to say I found all the importing, exporting and re-importing a right pain in the neck, so when CS3 came out with all the same features I went over to that.
And yes you can get LR for £86 if you are a student or know someone who is and will order it for you.

So just why is it so much better than CS3?
I wouldn't say better, as they are designed to do different things but do share some common functions.

I use both and couldn't do with just one of them, Lightroom is great workflow app for managing photos from camera to print. Taking them off the camera, organizing them, reviewing what I have and then making simple or most common adjustments.

If serious editing is needed then I would fire the image up in CS3 from Lightroom.
