just got me a copy of lightroom and have to say, bloody hell, what a program.....:thumbs:

I recommend it. Big time!!!!

Come on then people - explain why it's so good - sell it to a committed RawShooter Essentials user. :thumbs:

yeah. tricky one now.

I use NX to straighten if needed. lightroom to process and CS3 if I need to resize etc. All gets a bit long winded.:thinking:

I don't use NX, too slow for some reason, I can resize for the web in LR, using the export function, but any other sizes get done in CS3 once I've exported in PSD format.

Yeah, it is a bit clunky but the straightening tool is almost as great as women.
 
Is there a way to straighten images in Lightroom? I've missed it if there is...

I was as I had one of those ropey Mark III's where the view finder and the sensor were not square to each other :gag:

pretty much, aside from awful white balance and inconsistent focusing as well, oh and the fact that for about 5 or so weeks of the 12 that I owned it, it was back with Canon being 'looked at'.:cuckoo:
 
I love Lightroom, such a cool app.

That reminds me actually, i'v not got it installed on my new PC...better get on it! :D
 
Lightroom is growing on me (slightly).

My biggest gripe is speed - I found Rawshooter Premium to be significantly faster in raw conversion. I know its trying to be much more than a RAW converter, but on my P4 running at 3.6Ghz with 1.5Gb RAM its not as fast as I'd hope or expect. I'm told the Mac version is significantly quicker than the XP version.
 
I run it just fine on a P4 3.6 but have 3GB RAM not rapid but not slow. As ram is so cheap just throw £20 at it.
 
the straightening.. resizing and balances are all awesome in LR..
Doesnt mess with the original images...
fantastic for Raw...

Used it for a while now and now im trying out CS2 to have a go at processing levels and effects and stuff.
but LR is certainly a great tool.
 
Lightroom is Fab. Just wish i could find some time to process my pics! Runs quick on my G5 imac.
 
I think Lightroom is great for the process of processing, if you see what I mean. It really speeds up my editing process.

For doing stuff after the initial editing though, it's not the quickest. For example, creating a simpleviewer gallery in lightroom takes ages compared to Jalbum. And doing something as simple as a batch run on jpeg conversions so I can upload them to photobox seems to take much longer than it did if I ran a batch in CS2.
 
Must admit, I like lightroom.

It will even do 'auto' cloning etc, also the ease of adjusting levels/exposure etc is very good.

If you like to get your shots perfect in camera, Lightroom is the perfect tool.

Well done Adobe (or what ever company they bought it off :lol:)
 
Lightroom is the only tool I use, I don't have (or need at the moment) Photoshop. I have tried Aperture as well but still prefer Lightroom. It runs really quickly on my iMac.
 
Tried lightroom a few times, but still prefer Capture NX.
NX runs nicely on new pc now. No slowdown.
 
I recently got Lightroom too, havent had chance to use it just yet. It looks very daunting! I'm sure i'll get my head around it. I use CS3 for everything at the mo
 
I too love Lightroom. The only problem I have with it.. is that as you do some alterations in the develop module there isnt a preview button to click back and see how you have changed it so far. Reset obviouly UNDOES all you have just done which is not what I want.

How do you just compare it to the original?

You can do a split screen (before and after). Am not at home at the mo so can't remember offhand how it's done, but IIRC there's an icon box that you click. Probably not what you're looking for.

Alternatively you can get the history editing up on the left hand side of the screen and click on one stage for a view of how it looked at that time.

Sorry can't help beyond that, but I agree Lightroom is awesome IMHO.

In the develop module at the bottom of the image is a box with two YY in it. Click on this and you can see the effect of any changes you make. You'll get a before and after view. Click on the box on the left to cancel the comparison or just press "D" on the keyboard

So I thought I'd give it a whirl, for anything quick I use Nikon Capture but...my version doesn't open D200 files:suspect:, main weapon is NX but the file size output of a D200 are twice that of a D70, I only gots a gig of ram (maxed out), whilst it was pdq with D70 files, its getting on my nerves with D200 files.
So, I did a bit with LR and found it pretty good on the editing side, the thing I cant get my head round is the file management system, all this import export data base crap...wtf...I just wanna open a raw file, edit it, and save it as jpeg to the place of my choice, is this even possible ? does it even save as jpeg ?
Everytime I open it, it wants to create/import a database or some nonsense, and saving...well...I dunno...haven't managed it yet:shrug:
 
Personally I love it :D Been using it now for a few weeks instead of the Canon tools and CS3. Took me a little while to get used to it but I stuck with it as others were raving about it and I really didn't need the power of CS3 Extended :D

What helped me was downloading a video training tool that walked me through all the settings etc. Wasn't long before I found myself just using it without thinking and getting through my shots faster :thumbs:

I'm a convert and only use CS3......erm haven't for a long time now :lol:
 
I currently use Canon ZoomBrowser to download to a PC, DPP to convert raw to jpeg and do a tiny bit of editing (mainly just exposure and WB if I've got it wrong), and then do all the rest (such as it is) in PS7.

I'm considering Lightroom - would it be better than what I'm doing now? I've read that DPP is actually better re colour for raw conversions ... I'm also thinking of how it could help me organise my pictures better .... ?

LOL. I do know just what you mean. :D

I was perfectly happy with Raw Shooter Premium, but all support has gone for it now and it wont recognize RAW files from later cameras at all.

I can't be doing with the Canon software at all, the editing options are very limited and I just want to be able to open files if I want to straight from the CF card.

I'm currently trialling Lightroom with a view to forking out the dosh for it. I'm far from conversant with it yet, but I'm really starting to love it. You can definitely save files as jpegs or Tiffs. It is a bit irritating - this tendency to want to import and create catalogues all the time, but I'm sure it will be very useful once we get the hang of it. ;)

It's very quick and efficient and I can pull files straight from the 40D and the G9 CF cards, which I can longer do with RSP

i used to use rawshooter as well, but lightroom is such a step forward, it deals with all images the same so i can shoot in raw or jpeg, they both appear in the same program and are treated the same, its such an easy program to work with, ive been using it for a whole but only recently started using it properly, i now have a workflow which is quick and easy, i can crop and work the images.

my last batch of rally shots took me less than an hour to process (only cropped and sharpened) whereas it used to take a while working between rawshooter and photoshop.

I've no clue why anyone would need any software to download images from their camera, its just a storage drive, it shows up in My Computer as such, I dont read cards, I just plug it in usb, open it and remove the damn pics to a place I choose...simple.
I have Picture Project (nikon stuff), whats it for ?, I haven't a clue, why does anyone need software to organise their own photos...are they stupids...:thinking:
Interference software gets on my wick...

dont mind me, I'm just annoyed NX wants 600mb of ram to open a flippin poxy photo, and the alternatives have a nanny to tell you what you want to do...:nono:
 
I love LR, it really has become central to my work flow. There are so many neat little features such. I love being able to "dim the lights" with a keypress and the ratings and colour codes are great (blue for my processed/retouched shots, purple for sharpened shots for print etc). Ratings are also quite handy particularly using 5 stars for portfolio quality shots - great for when you're updating a web gallery or prepping examples of your work.

Still needs a little bit of work and could be a bit faster (I'm not exactly using a slow machine) but considering it's quite a new program I think Adobe have done a great job.
