Thinking about upgrading to LR4. Have seen quite a few comments on Adobe forums about the sluggish way LR4 works and other issues.

Any real world experiences here to sway me?

Thanks

On my i7 930 system LR4 runs pretty smoothly, reacts pretty quickly to any changes I make in the develop module.

Even my Sandybridge i5 MBP runs LR4 really well.

I've found that it was sluggish while rebuilding the previews, but is now OK.
LR4 feels slightly different and a few operations might be perceived as fractionally slower; I'm not sure it is and it is definitely not enough for me to get frustrated by.
I've only got a medium spec PC (8Gb 2.6 GHz i5) and it's more than up to the job.

Is that running a dual monitor setup in LR4?

I just gave two monitors a go and it was very usable.
But I can't compare with LR3 performance.

I'd like to understand how people are using LR with twin monitors as I just don't seem to 'get it'. All the options I've tried add so little to my workflow that I've been using the other monitor for keeping an eye on my email, selecting music, etc.

You can use the second monitor on the grid setting, this means that you can see all the images in the set without having to leave the develop module to the library module. Well that's what I use it for anyway.

Ah...
I'm using the film strip along the bottom for selecting sets of images for comparison and synchronised changes.
If I need more than that then bouncing my fingers off the G and D keys is fast and painless - probably faster than moving my mouse over to the other screen!

In the quick play I just had, the best use I could fine was for the 2nd monitor to show Survey. This might make working with a set of related images a good deal easier.
I'm going to give this setup a go for real this weekend as I will have a whole load of concert images to process.

There is a definite pause before the Develop module opens.

Otherwise no other speed problems.

Any issues with CS5?

Using ACR6.6 or 6.7RC

Mines is almost instantaneous, whereas LR4 is a definite tiny lag.

I think LR4runs just as quick if not faster than LR3. I can't comment on using it dual screen, although I do use a multi screen setup the others are used to watch movies whilst editing lol

In fact, just tried it again and would say probably around 2 to 3 times longer with LR4.

I too can't comment on a dual screen setup.

No, it was NOT the same with LR3.

In fact, IS NOT the same with LR3!

Errm - now I'm confused.
So with LR3 you go no pause entering Develop, even for the first time?
And with LR4 you are getting a pause every time you enter Develop?
I presume you are referring to the Develop toolbars appearing and not the 'Loading' message displayed when either zooming to 100% (also get it if LR is configured to skip preview generation).

All I can say is that both my PCs are the same (medium spec Windows 7 desktop and a crappy Vista laptop).
LR3 and LR4 have a sizeable pause the first time Develop is entered. Re-entering Develop is almost instant.

for those of you that have it - LR 4.1 is out to address some of the bugs.

What I am saying is that, if I am in LIBRARY module, when the DEVELOP key is pressed on the tool bar, LR4 takes 2 to 3 times longer to open the DEVELOP module than LR3 does (LR3 opens the module straight away).

It's no big deal on my machine (same as Neil's but with a quicker SSD) but I could see it being a real problem on my older PC.

The other thing I have found is LR4 takes longer to make Virtual Copies than LR3.

its gets very confused on my dual monitor set up. Particularly when switching to another applications

No speed problems, but a couple of minor annoyances using the adjustments brushes

Aside from the way it keeps telling me it needs ACR 7, which of course doesn't exist. There seem to be a couple of colourspace issues when I switch between the two and have to get LR to render to keep colourspace

That's good news, hopefully wending its way to me, I just tried to update and it says no updates available :'(

Interesting comments. Glad the RC for 4.1 is out.

Think I'll wait a couple of weeks to see if 4.1 update solves the majority of issues.
