If you were to select 6 out of these 11 Nikon models to keep, which six would you choose and for what reason(s)

F
F2
F3
F4
FE
FE2
FM
FM2
FA
FG
F80

Before we say, you have to tell us if the other five are going in the Classifieds . . . :exit:

Huh Asha I didn't know you had so many Nikons....I'm impressed

Um, is it ok to say, none of the above? OK, I'll get me coat! :coat:

F3 and F5 or F100

oh....

F3 and swap the rest for an F5 or F100

oh....

actually you could make a case for the FM2 instead of F3

oh........I dunno, 6 is too many, dump them all and get a T70..:D

I never used the last three but all the others and had in their times
great experience with them.

My keeper really is, as I have two F4E's, for the matrix metering,
ergonomics and the auto focus.

First to go would be the F3, ugliest of all the single digit F series.
Then the F80, only because if I'm going to have a autofocus consumer camera I'd rather have an F100
Tough choice but I think I'd let the FE2 go because it can't use non AI lenses and the FE2 has an auto power off which is a bit irritating.

All a bit tricky to make a choice out of all of them but if 3 had to go it would be these.

F
F2
F3
FE2
FM2
F4.

The above give you good history and model progression and cover all or most design changes over a long period of time.

Having only used two on that list, I know what I would and wouldn't keep, and ergonomics plays a big part... I'd ditch the Fm2 for that reason
The F4 has decent enough AF and metering,...I'd keep that one.

Ironically the F4 is high on the list to go......such a variation of opinions from people. Interesting nonetheless.

I think you should sell the FE, not a very good camera at all and not worth very much, in actual fact you may as well just give it away

Mmmm trust you to add to my dilema:mad::bat::D

I actually quite like the F3 and find it less ugly than some of the later models such as the F100:exit:

The FE2 appeals more to me simply as it offers the higher shutter speed over the FE ( which iirc accepts non AI lenses)....not a big deal but it comes in handy shooting wide open in bright light.

As for the F80, AF consumer cameras don't typically rock my boat but the F80 does mirror very much mirror the cough, digi, cough D80 in so far as controls and for me feels comfortable in use and is dead light!

As you say; all a bit tricky ....I'll just follow @joxby johns advice and shift the lot and follow Brians footsteps:exit::ROFLMAO:

:ty: Richard. Your reply is about the most helpful so far tbh (y)

In fact your list is close to what I was already thinking prior to posting this thread although the FA is preferable to the F4 and as for the F2....mmm i dunno, too much like the F and I do like size, weight and ease of use of the FG.

Only used two ...you slacker! :D

AF and metering don't play a part in my photography as I never get either correct anyway wether it be with a box camera or the F4!! :ROFLMAO:

Keep:
F - seminal camera, although not quite as usable as the others
F2 - legendary camera, most usable all-manual body that you'll have
F3 - aperture priority, excellent build quality, and still very reliable
FE2 - faster top shutter speed, more compact, aperture-priority can be useful
FM2 - faster top shutter speed, more compact, sister camera to the FE2
FA - a highly featured, multi-faceted camera

Give away in the Freebies section:
F4 - too heavy, too bulky, and many of the features in the F4 can be found in the FA without the weight
FG - a good little camera, but similar in weight/features to FE2
F80 - plastic fantastic, no thanks
FE - features replicated in FE2, without the top shutter speed
FM - features replicated in FM2, without the top shutter speed

:ty: FC2for taking time and effort to type that up.....offers me some facts to consider in my decission.(y)

Actually, truth be told, I'm not that keen on the original F. Yes, it is a seminal camera, so from a collecting viewpoint it's great to have, but the F2 really is such an improvement on it (from a shooting point of view). A black F with a non-metered prism is a beautiful object, but the awkward metering prisms ruin the F a little bit (whereas at least they seem to suit the F2's design better).

I should add - I've owned or used most of the cameras you've mentioned in the list, and after various buying and selling I whittled it down to F2/F3/FE2, and I think they are great for different things.

Tbh I've always found myself picking up the F as against the F2.....for some reason the latter has always taken 2nd place .....Perhaps I could do to run a film or two through it just to remind myself how much I like or dislike it over the F before letting it go.

:jawdrop: :wideyed: :runaway:

@excalibur2 Brian, should I ? :p

Well you can always say with pride "I've used one":D remember at the meet you took a nice shot with a T70 :ty:

Incidentally did you dev the shot taken inside the old derelict house (or was it a hut) where I gave you the exposure reading (from the T70) to use on your camera?

OMG did I really ??:exit:. Are you sure that you're not mistaking me for someone else? :p. ......Oh the shame of it:D, I!

Now i haven't a clue tbh .....if it was a C41 shot then yes it will be developed, if E6 then not yet...they're still in the fridge.

I actually cannot recall what shot it was......I presume it was the derelict building behind the hall at Whipsnade?.....I took shot several frames inside there ....You got any idea what it was of ...the kitchen area, the rear room??

Well maybe you didn't use the exposure reading as I can't remember..but do remember the sink shot with folder (one elephant etc)...how did that come out?

This one with a Six_20 Folding Brownie??......looks to be an imprint of the backing paper on the shot......as always a bit of fun with this old kit,

As you say several elephants exposer, "handheld" too, wedged against the wall iirc

Difficult one as I have also recently been looking hard at my small(er) Nikon collection.

I decided the F2 and FE2 were the keepers.
Best of the old and the new (er)

Owning all on the list apart from the FE (with no plans to slim the collection down :)) , I would mirror what Freecom2 said with the exception of keeping the F4 in place on the F. Other than nostalgia, I don't see what an F offers over an F2 from a shooting point of view. The F2 seems so much more refined to shoot to me. What finder do you have with your F? The FTN that came with mine was dead so I got an eyelevel one. Might see it in a slightly different light if I had a working FTN finder?

As for the F4. I like the way it works with manual focus lenses. Having access to a spot meter is handy & I really like the control layout & the way that it shoots. Prefer the way it handles to the F5.

.

FTN finder which works reasonably well ... a little eratic to start with at times if it hasn't been used for a while.

More often than not I don't rely on it ...if i need to meter at all ( with most of my kit) I prefer to obtain a usually more accurate reading from a seperate handled device

F - Iconic, with the FTN head
F2 - gone
F3 - Workhorse with Aperture Priority Auto
F4 - First of the line in a new breed
FE - gone
FE2 - FE with knobs on!
FM - gone
FM2 - wow.... ultimate pocket (large) weapon of choice!
FA - Good upgrade from the FE

FG - gone
F80 - gone .... (never knew why it came about - just happened?)

I appreciate that it really doesn't help much, but personally, I'd sell all of them and buy an F5 and an FM3a.

If I had an FM3a then I'd look at keeping it, as for an F5.....doesn't appeal tbh.

Now the question is do I shift more than five and pick up an FM3a .......probably not but after I sleep and dream about one tonight, who knows :D
