OK, in my attempts to convert tP into tMP (ask and I shall elaborate) I thought I'd start a thread on music, and what génres we like and love. To me, I guess music invokes the same inner feelings and emotions as photography does to many of us around these parts.

Both hobbies are quite remarkable to be honest, and have wonderful ways of allowing us to create expression and feeling; allowing one to express oneself, and both are capable of invoking extremely powerful emotions.

I don't tend to drive very much of late, except on weekends when I am a part time taxi driver for the kids :). Yesterday I was driving and was listening to the fabulous ClassicFM station and heard a track I had forgotten about and hadn't heard for several years. This was one track that brought back powerful emotions for me, and I duly searched it out on iTunes and purchased a copy.

I managed to find a recording of it on YouTube and post a copy of it here for your viewing and listening pleasure. The sound recording is not that good as it was made with a camcorder, but if you have a spare 5 mins, and you fancy dimming the lights, relaxing and just plain drifting off to wherever you want to go to - then I suggest you have a listen to this wonderful piece of music.

It's called 'O Magnum Mysterium', and perhaps may not be to everyones taste, but to me... is simply sublime....

why do people have to stereotype you into liking one genre of music?.
i ride a motorbike, so i should only like rock.
. i,m a lorry driver, so i should like middle of the road(sorry , no pun intended)and country.
its like saying i,m working class and live in the midlands , so should like football and whippits , and wear a flat cap.
anyway ,my music collection and likes , have everything from 1950,s blues , to 80,s electronica,to 07 charts.and pretty much everything in between.
i listen to radio 1, and sometimes radio4.
as a real generalisation, the only music that doesnt do anything for me is american country music.and boy bands (yawn).i even have to admit to liking the spice girls .
my fav at the mo is Gossip.Beth Ditto rocks. scary tho.

I like all sorts of stuff. Dire Straights, Genesis etc from the 80's, I like My Chemical Romance, Kasabian, The Killers from now.

But on the other hand, I also like Dances with Wolves by John Barry and Ashokan Farewell by Dual.. both of these really get to me.

I think it is great and shows a good broad mind to like lots of different types of music.

Well I tried to enjoy that but all the clicking caught on the camcorder from the the cameras going off kinda ruined it for me. So I switched it off and went back the Andrea Bocelli I was listening to.

My fave tune of the moment is Ramble On though. Very recently discovered and just lovign it.

I've always thought that as art forms, music and photography are extremely similar. Both require that the creation comes directly from the soul but then need some amount of techy knowhow/ability to make it happen

I appreciate your mentioning that your comments were not intended as having a go at anyone... but I have to say that I didn't mention anything at all about stereotyping people into liking a particular type of music. In fact, I suggested quite the opposite and I am astonished as to why you mentioned this.

Music is personal, is subjective, and can be very intimate... and as is photography, is to ones own personal preference and taste.

In the main, I don't think people stereotype others into liking one génre of music at all. It may be that some peoples knowledge of the multitude of varieties, styles, and génres of music is limited, and as such know little or nothing of this and perhaps then associate certain hobbies, social class or person types to liking only a specific subset of music styles - I don't know, but I certainly don't.

I like a myriad of stlyles of music; from Genesis to Yes, from Enya to Barber, and from electronic chillout, ambient and classical, to progressive rock - and many in between.

Then again having said that, I think the only people who like Country and Western are Southern State Americans aren't they...:):)

I listen to and like most forms of music. In the car, I listen to Classic FM a lot, but also more pop oriented stations. When I pull the dustcover off the keyboard these days, I like to murder a bit of Bach or Beethoven mostly, but I'll happily enjoy playing Herman Hupfeld's great classic song, and lots of more modern stuff.

There isn't much music I don't like - I even like a lot of American Country music. :D What I can't be arsed with is Garage,Trance type stuff which sounds as though it's been auto generated from a keyboard sequencer in someone's back bedroom.

I do like choral stuff MM and that one is nice, but Verdi takes a bit of beating for me when it comes to writing for the human voice. The Chorus Of The Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco just blows me away every time I here it.

Everything from The Anonymous 4 to Joy Division.
Pepper that with a bit of Elgar, My Chemical Romance, & Marilyn Manson, and you'd get some idea of my musical taste :D

Elgar - manic depressive, but he did write some great stuff. Marylin Manson though? :gag:

:D

I was brought up on T.Rex, Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy etc. by my dad so I kind of consider that to be my musical roots. When I was in my early teens I got into Nirvana (my cousin gave me a tape of the Nevermind album). 2000 - 2003 was the best time in music for me, when the "nu-metal" era began. I loved the whole Slipknot, Deftones, Papa Roach thing that was going on at the time.
Around 2005 or so, I began to listen to a rather broad range of music (underground hip-hop, electronica, drum & bass). It's weird because all those years ago, I never thought I'd be listening to the stuff I listen to these days. Music is pretty much the backbone of my life.

Nobody's mentioned the Beatles yet. God how I hated them when they first appeared. I hated everything about them, their suits, their haircuts, their funny shaped guitars. I'm not sure they deserved the praise which was heaped upon them. Certainly they were original, but the Lennon McCartney duo were being hailed as great composers on a par with Bach and Co.

I did grow to like some of their stuff, and for me Lennon's 'Imagine' would be among my all time pick of the greats, but I'm not sure they were ever in the same league as say, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, or will be played as much in 10 or 20 years time.

Where to start hmmm? I have over 400 albums, practically every genre you can think of.

I love the old rock groups, Marillion, Deepl Purple,Pink Floyd,Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi.

Fleetwood Mac I play a lot!
Clapton, Bowie and Sting.
The New Romantics; Spandau Ballet, Ultravox etc
Phil Collins, Brian Ferry, David Gilmour, Rod Stewart, U2.

Medaeval Babes, Athlete and Gnarls Barkley, Anastacia

All of Puccini's operas, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Strauss.
Even Il Divo.
Bond, Howard Shore.

It's late, I can't think anymore, goodnight all.

It's easier (and a great deal quicker) for me to say what I don't like:
Avant Garde Jazz, boy bands, girls bands, the fashion for black girl singers to warble and any techno garage grunge whatever the hell they call it these days.

My particular likes are Rock and Roll, Blues and Trad Jazz with quite a lot of Country and Metal thrown in too although some of the Country songs can be absolutely disastrous.

All time favourite songs are Johnny B Goode and Jailhouse Rock.

When the Beatles first appeared I never thought they would last more than a couple of hits. Shows how wrong I can be.

i like music, mainly piano music like ben folds as my favourite, but i dont dispise any form of music apart from Rnb (the new wave of RnB that is rhymes and beats or whatever it is) which i quite frankly think is utter talentless drivel (reference Akon if your in any doubt).

favourite songs have to be jungleland by springsteen, another girl, another planet by the only ones and evaporated by ben folds five

Music should be Band - surely?:D

Only 2 forms I never like - Opera & err forgot the name (that's how important to me it is:lol:) - that one where they make it up as they go along with everyone going off at a tangent so long as someone somewhere plays something reminiscent of the tune - aarrgghh mind's gone blank :bang: - usually older black guys playing brass, a piano maybe and double bass :bang::bang: - there's even a car with the name of it too - aarrgghhhhhh:bang::bang::bang:

I grew up with Jazz music in the house, as my father played jazz violin (but he also played with Rod Stewart - even on Top of the Pops !!) and all my life I have wanted a music room where listening is the main reason for being there. When we sold up in Walthamstow (the cheap side of London) to move out to Spain, I got the stereo and music room so longed for, and it was the first room to be finished in the house - Kate is a very understanding woman !
I have around 2800 lps and 4000 cd's, despite loosing about 400 of each when we moved (no insurance payout for that - it still hurts !)
I try to be open to most sorts of music, but as my life over the last few years has meant lots of time away from home, I seem to have pulled out the same favourites time after time, and as most of my listening is done late at night, it tends to be gentle and fairly acoustic. As I get closer to my 50th (4 months..) I find a most of the current so-called pop unlistenable, as it is music-for-profit, and soul-less. It upsets me to see the ipod generation busily compressing music to fit 10000000 tunes onto a small machine, without any care for how it sounds, and were we still in london, I would have had so many round just to hear what a fairly decent hifi can sound like, as music has so much more to offer than a tune - one friend never could understand what I meant by emotion until I got him round and played a (fairly obvious) blues song - Loan me a Dime, by Boz Scaggs, with Duane Allman on slide guitar - he had tears flowing down his cheeks.. Another friend, who's father was an opera singer, bought round some of his old vinyl and had never heard so much in them, and has since gone on to buy a turntable and now pops over to use my record cleaning machine and regale me with his latest rediscovery - he is 70 years old, and suddenly so full of life again !
I often have 'moments' where I am in the same position, and not just the quiet stuff - both Janice and TMM have mentioned Genesis - do you know the 'Seconds Out' live album - some of the drumming is just amazing, and hearing 2 guys so in tune (sic) with each other is mind blowing.

Blimey - I am rambling on a bit - not even sure what my point is yet, but music can be such a powerful thing - it helps me understand my emotions, to escape, to smile, to cry and to just be happy - what else can offer so much ??
For the bored folks, there is a picture of me and one end of the music room in my gallery - yes, it is a sad thing to have on display, but, hey, I am a sad old man..

WOW - great response to this thread.

@Steve: yup, you've certainly got the point I was trying to make when starting this thread.

I do have the excellent album, Seconds Out - and many other Genesis albums too. I saw them in concert a few weeks ago in Manchesters Old Trafford, when Phil Collins and Chester Thompson did another drum duet - just as classic as on other albums. Their set actually commenced at 8:00 and they played solidly until 10:30, not many bands nowadays who would play for that long. Was a superb concert.

@Dave: the style you're referring to is a other times called Freeform or Freestyle Jazz - and I will admit to not liking it either. There doesn't seem to be any structure or tonality to it and I'd make the analogy of just holding the camera and pointing it anywhere, setting any random dial setting, and clicking away. You're doubtful to get a decent pic eh!. As for Opera, there are some absolutely gorgeous pieces of music in that génre... have a search for 'One Fine Day' from Madame Butterfly - 'tis wonderful stuff.

@CT: Some Trance style music is really good too, in fact some of it is quite exceptional. Have a listen to this extract from a 1hour 17minute mix called Sensations.

The original track in its entirety, together with others can be downloaded for free from here: http://www.madstation.net/home.htm

The intro is brilliantly controlled with the high pass filter effect (traditionally used throughout trance music), but here is just superbly executed. The high-pass filter is sometimes referred to as the 'tone' changer where the music goes through the ooooooooeeerrrrreeeeeeyyaaaaaaaaahhhh effect (seems funny written there, but have a listen and you'll hear what I mean) if you want a short demo of any of these effects, just shout as I'm happy to do these if anyone's interested. The intro progresses through the traditional trance filtering, placing additional layers onto the mix for each verse, first just the synth strings, then at around 0:28 choral effects, then arpegiators, then percussion and bass when the music reaches it's peak. Gotta say, I love this track and have had a go at replicating it on my rig (not very well I may add). So you see, there's even a lot of stuff in some trance music!! :):)

Thanks for reading.... comments welcome.

My musical tastes are quite wide and varied, dependant upon my mood. I like music that stirs up emotions, and to me, that is what music is all about. I hardly ever listen to the radio these days as I can't bear the 'manufactured' poop, sorry, I mean 'pop' that seems to dominate the airwaves.

I was brought up listening to bands like Led Zep, ACDC, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc and I guess this has influenced my musical tastes as I much prefer listening to a good rock/metal band over anything else. I do however, also like Motown, Soul, and various other stuff, so difficult to categorise, but if I could only ever listen to one genre of music ever again, it would have to be rock/metal :D

As music is always a mood thing I find myself with far too much Roger Waters/Floyd stuff on the turntable recently.
I've made a conscious decision to refrain from that for a while.
Tend to be running through a lot of older faves whilst educating someone else.

I don't like opera generally, nor US country (twangy guitar on the porch singing about my dead wife/dog that's left stuff), boyband stuff (generally), but even those have exceptions as the emotion can win through if it's done well.
not heard a chart rundown for about 20 years so no idea what goes on there(nor care TBH). Radio 2 is played in the car.

Mostly play rock but collection spans from George Formby through to Motorhead and most things inbetween.

And now I'll go before I start rambling.

So, who likes jRock? :D

I`m mostly into rock and metal. I`m a massive Thunder nut, I must`ve seen them live about 15-20 times now. Oh and Little Angels were top.

Who else? AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Bowling for soup... The usual staple diet of Metallica, Maiden and Megadeth too. Getting into the back catalogue of Motorhead at the moment.
Suicidal Tendencies were great when I saw them live, they`ve got some bloody good albums out.

Also love Motley Crue, Skid Row and other dodgy hair metal/glam bands from the 80`s. Goo goo dolls are great

Faithless, and loads of trancey stuff. A little too old for the clubbing scene now though.

Oh, and I have been known to dance to "Reach" by S Club 7........ LOL.

petemc. my daughter is a major manga fan and glotton for owt japanese. (all our pet rats have japanese nakes),just played that and she came running in"whats that dad?" . you now have another fan.

I've not heard them before but then I haven't heard of quite a few of your music choices Pete ( TP's LastFM is a revelation!)
I like them and it's a good vid too!

The band is called High and Mighty Colour, and the song is Ichirin no Hana. I'm also a huge fan of Yoko Kanno. Would you believe that the same person did both of these?

Along with a number of other bands, I worked with both Thunder and Little Angels, and even Toby on his own at times. I still keep in touch with most of them. Cracking guys. (In fact I toured with Thunder for around 50 concerts)

So favs, well along with those Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Runrig, Capercaillie, in fact you name it I probably like it :)

For something a bit different check out a good friend of mine - troy donockley http://www.troydonockley.co.uk/ - hes just been on the latest Nightwish album but some may know him from You Slosh days. (especially if you were a student in the late 80's)

Justabout anything for me but Definitely NO JAZZ or ANYTHING CLOSELY RESEMBLING IT!!

Love 80's classics and SOME opera.

CT!

Have you heard Zucchero do Va Pensiero?
