Which is best, UV or Skylight?

Most people get UV ,get a decent one though as cheap ones can degrade the image from the lens.
Skylight can be used, but will warm the image slightly, the UV or ultra violet is of special benefit by the seaside or in mountain regions.

Some people say don't bother with UV's but if you are clumsy like me ,it is far cheaper to replace a UV than a scratched lens.

Hoya also do a Protector filter.

'Protection' or UV - skylights are a little 'pinkish'...

If you decide to use them at all - some say you do, some say you don't - only you can make the decision.
More than enough threads on the subject without rehashing it all over again...
Do a quick search if you're concerned.

I personally don't bother with filters. A good lens hood will protect the front from knocks.

Some will disagree, but it's personal preference.

I use the Hoya HD. Hardened glass, with even more of the juicyness of the pro-1's. Expensive, but I sit in the 'filters are good' camp, and I love the fact that you could just about swing a hammer at the front of these and they'd survive.

Hoya make the best filters in the world, and the HD's are Hoya's best filters. Lens hoods are fine, but you only need one indiscretion when you weren't using it [you might call it the 'Boris Becker' phenomenon]... As someone who came off his bike on one of the only occasions I wasn't wearing my leathers....

Having said that, I've also a lot of respect for Kood, which are the exact opposite in terms of price, but which seem to punch above their weight.

the UV or ultra violet is of special benefit by the seaside or in mountain regions.

UV filters have totally zero benefit at the seaside for two reasons. 1 - The amount of UV at the seaside is no more and no less than anywhere else at sea level. 2 - DSLRs aren't sensitive to UV light, there's a filter in front of the sensor. Reason 2 also apples to mountains.

I went with the Hoya Pro Protectors after using UV filters for years on my film cameras.

I'd like a lens hood with razor sharp edges so inconsiderate people who bump into you won't do it again, ouch!!!!
