Lens count how many is too many

we could add how many lenses have you owned in your life as some of us have this many only because we couldn't be bothered with the hassle of selling them

I streamlined my kit since getting my 5D Mk III in order to do the body justice, part-exing some Sigma and non L Canon glass on the way.

I'm now down to Canon 8-15mm L, 17-40mm L, 24-105mm L, 100-400mm L, 85mm f1.8 and a Tamron 90mm Macro Di.

Future buys will probably be limited to a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L, a Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro and maybe, just maybe a Sigma 300-800 if one pops up secondhand at MPB !

no canon owner should be without the 70-200 f2.8 IS L mk1 or mk2 imo
I'd divorce my wife to get one ........ hang on I did that already lol

I raise you two 24mm TSE lenses!
I got the Mk 1 to see if I could get on with the Tilt / Shift thing, got the Mk 2 which I love.
But the Mk 1 is still in the cupboard :cuckoo:

I've also got a shelf load of dodgy lenses bought in my film days that don't work properly with the latest DSLRs - I suppose I ought to pass them on but they are getting to be collectors items...

But back on topic - I ain't got 18 lenses

I have 19 now just bought a 105 macro lol
I really ought to sell some of them I just can't be bothered with the hassle of selling though

Like guitars, you can never have enough.

True :D I just bought my mates Fardia m26, even though I've got a Martin :D

Lens wise, I can't see how you can get 18 lenses unless you have different brand bodies. As far as I can see, if you get the best for each focal length you wont need that many. Maybe chuck in a couple of overlapping walk about lenses.

Personally I've got:

Sigma 12-24, Canon 35L, Sigma 50mm 1.4, Canon 70-200 F4L, Canon 85L, Canon 100L (replaced my Sigma 105). At some point I'll upgrade the 12-24 to the new version, and the 70-200 to the new 2.8mkII but the only other lens I can see me getting currently would be the Bigma.

Oh, just remembered I gave my sister my nifty fifty, sigma 70-300 and the kit lens (with the 300D and the 30D).

quite a few of the lenses came with the camera's I bought over the years

Well lets hope they stick to this format. I don't want to have to spend thousands again, any time soon. They can change it after I'm dead. That'll suit me :D

so we could change the title to how many lenses have you owned
I sold my bigma non os and it was a very easy sale to Karen other lenses I have struggled to sell
I replaced the bigma with the OS version
I do have to have more lenses than most and more cameras than one as my son is into photography and shares my kit

with my first film camera I thought I needed ALL the lenses, so I first set out to get a zoom and wide angle.

After those I ran out of money and excuses for why I need more glass rather than rolls of film.

These days I shoot only with a 50mm on my Canon A-1 or 58mm on my Zenit 11

Some people don't like the weight...

A lot of people, me included, prefer the f4.
Here's the 70-200 f4 fitted to the bedside camera last weekend. :D

some people can't justify that. :(

17-40mm f4L (want, got my eyes pealed for one in classified)
24-105mm f4L
50mm f1.8 II
70-300mm cheapo Tamron for very occasional shots

4 is enough for me, 6 would be too many for me.

the problem I have is if I upgrade a lens I never get round to selling the old one

I was reading this and thinking 'wow, 18 is loads'. Just counted mine in my head, across all systems, I have 13! Couldn't believe it was so many. In my defence, I am currently on a lens diet.

Erm, well over a hundred including all my old legacy glass, been meaning to sell some of it for ages, trouble is every time I try and sort out ones to go I end up putting them back with the intention of giving it another try first, hence the amount :cuckoo:

14-42mm f/3.5-5.6

I think that's all of them :naughty: :exit:

I've got access to 11 lenses, although 3 of them are really the wifes so I rarely use them. I've got 5 primes ranging from a 35 f2 up to a 100 f2.8 L Macro and that includes a 40 f2.8 STM that's the wifes. The rest are zooms ranging from 24mm up to 500mm and include 2 f2.8 and an f4 fixed zooms. I use all of them, but obviously some get a lot more use than the others, but I wouldn't sell any as I never know when I'd need them. As I shoot everything from insects to aviation regularly and other specialized subjects on occasions I use them all from time to time.

do you think this guy might win the I have too many cameras and lenses in use at one time award

that's the problem with today's cameras: not enough innovation.

with the smart phone he probably could quickly email the shot off. whereas with cameras, he would have to take the card out and use a computer to send them off.

hopefully my next DSLR would have a smart phone OS and wifi, to allow photos to be sent wirelessly, via Email, twitter, facebook and not forgetting beam the RAW file onto my computer when i get back.

I like to have all bases covered so only have a 4mm gap in FL availability from 8mm up to 500 and not too much in the way of duplicated ranges. Don't carry it all, tend to have a core bag and shelves full of what's left over - there's no way I'm lugging the Sigma 150-500 OS around unless I KNOW I'll need it !
The core kit is
8mm Sigma fisheye (it's light and fun so worth keeping with me)
12-24 Sigma (it's remarkably well corrected for rectilinear distortions and allows huge sweeping landscapes.
24-70 Sigma f/2.8 (my prefered choice for keeping on the camera most of the time)
70-300 VR Nikon (decent reach, relatively lightweight and gives great results even when the VR is needed)
There are a coupl of other primes in there too - a 50mm f/1.8 for low light (coupled with a D700, you can almost literally shoot in the dark!) and a Macro, currently a Tamron 90mm but a Nikon 105VR is on order for collection next week. Wanted one for ages and after a recent health scare and knowing I could afford it, I have!

Having come back into photography after a long break, I dropped into it when AF was available but shortly before digital SLRs were affordable to me so all my lenses are suitable for 35mm (because that's what I was using) so my upgrade to an Fx body involved no extra expense in glass upgrades from Dx to Fx.

I suppose I should have a wee bit of a tidy up but am in no rush to do so.

Next stop might have to be a FLIR thermal imaging setup...

Sorry if this all sounds like a willy wave but I like to be as honest and to give as complete an answer as possible! I'm also happy using a compact and have several including a rather cute Minox Leica M3 model - fixed focus/aperture but produces more than acceptable images. At 6'1 though, I look a little oversized with it strapped round my neck!!! I can justify my Canon D10 compact very easily - it's waterproof down to 10m and I enjoy snorkelling off the beaches of Crete. See, proof that although I'm mainly a Nikon shooter, I have no dislike of the Canon brand - indeed both my photo printers are Canons - the retired S820 (A4) and the current iX4000 (A3). Which reminds me, must run a couple of prints through it to help prevent any nozzle blockages after not being used while I was in hospital.

Three zooms covering a range from wide to tele seems reasonable, plus a few primes and a macro or two so all in all anything from 6-10 or there abouts would seem reasonable.

I have...
5D.
12-24mm.
20-35mm.
70-300mm.
20mm f1.8.
50mm f1.4.
85mm f1.4.
150mm f2.8 macro.

MFT.
14-42mm.
20mm f1.7.
25mm f0.95.
55mm f1.7.

Seems reasonable to me but others could play about with focal lengths and have a different list.
