Lencarta

Nah, Garry will do us proud and get these out of the door and delivered to us n Friday. After all, we've been waiting in all day for the website to update so we can order them as quickly as possible, and Garry's a good guy and likes to please his customers (hint, hint), LOL.

I wonder if he is reading this :D lol long as it comes before tuesday when I go back to work! Would be great to get it friday to mess on with it though...I wont be able to sleep now...

Ordered mine, please, please be despatched Thurs so I can have a play over the weekend!!

I'm not reading this thread!
Seriously, all orders go to the warehouse in order of payment. I can't make promises (I'm not bright enough to pack orders myself) but the warehouse are working extra hours and will get as many orders out tomorrow as they possibly can.

What if I slip you an extra £1.75? eh eh :naughty:

joking aside I think we all appreciate how much effort you are going to with all the orders

Surely preference should be for Nikon shooters :D

Whats the difference between the smartflash and the elitepros other than output?

More buttons:)

The extra controls are
Modelling lamp, can be proportional or full power
Flash ready beeper can be turned off
Modelling lamp can dim while recycling
Twice the adjustment range

Plus modelling lamp is brighter, at 250 watts instead of 150 watts
Can be used with Fresnel Spot. Plus of course the extra power

Whooooo!!! It came today. I didn't get home to mid afternoon, so came back to a disgruntled wife who wanted to know what I had been buying now!!! With loads of excitement I unpacked it all and had a quick play. I already had my backdrop up in my tight lounge so borrowed my son (green top) and friends baby who was over for some test shots.

This is not a full blown review... but my thoughts...

Seems excellent value for money. The stands seem very solid and nothing like the flimsy Konig lightstand I have. Lights are a bit bigger than I thought, but went together easily. Pop up softbox took a couple of attempts to attach to light - best to do this with light pointing up and box not fully open I found. Glad I did not go for the 120cm one as this should be big enough. Overall looks like some very nice kit and I think better than I had expected. Seems like all the reviews previously were spot on.

Never used proper lighting before, so the images below have many faults and were only test shots, but quite impressed with them. Just stuck D300 to Flash WB, ISO 200, 1/160, f8 and had both stands around 6 feet from subject (limits of room I was in) prob about 6 feet apart. First image was on close to full power and blown out, so put the dials in 12 o clock position.

Background is not the bright white it should be, probably need to boost the power and use the background reflector when it turns up - but like i said, this was just 'plug and play' with no real thought - hope to post some images with a bit more thinking! Just a couple of questions...

Guess the two white lights in the eyes mean subject was too close to lights?

Do you need to remove the softbox diffusers when foding?

lol, tell me about it! At first it just span and I was like, how the hell do I get this attached! Then I realised I could just open a few of the velcro straps (I assume it's the same with your softbox?) and grab the metal ring.

Good stuff! :)

No. Put the softbox face down on the floor and attach the flash head to it - much easier:)

No, you just need to remove enough to get your hand to the release clip. As it folds, push the diffusers in, which will keep them clean.

BTW, what did you set the WB to? Seems off to me.

It's quite a hike in price to get these with the Lencarta range. The Elemental Genesis ones I got have all this plus increased power and I was only looking at an extra £40 in price. I wondering that apart from the obvious power upgrade, why the extra cost between the Smartflash and the Elite range?

Also wondering, would a 250w modelling lamp work in the Smartflash or is it not as simple as just upgrading the bulb? lol

Cheers
G

EDIT: Note for anyone reading, this IS NOT to start a Lencarta/Elemental debate please. Just in case!

Simon, what exact kit did you go for?

2 head kit, 1 octo pop up softbox 95cm, 1 brolly.

Flash on D300, in LR it says 5900 - seemed off to me too. Also, assume its ok to use baby wipes to clean the outer diffuser if it does get marked?

Yes, but having those controls, and using componants that make them work properly, is expensive.

If you feel that another make is as good inside as the Lencarta for less money, you'd better buy it.

Yes, because it has a powerful fan the SmartFlash is perfectly capable of using a 250W lamp. The power was reduced to 150W because, if positioned very close to the subject and when used with very low flash power, it's possible that the brightness of the modelling lamp can cause mild colour pollution, especially when used at a slow shutter speed. Not a big issue, but as Lencarta spends a lot of money on componants that produce very accurate colour temperature, it makes sense not to waste all that money and effort.

Cheers for the response. Just wondering from the above, if this is the case then how can you fit them in the Elite range? Wouldn't you encounter the same problem when they are used at low power?

Flash doesn't usually work too well. If your camera allows, set it to 5600K. If it doesn't, set a custom white balance.

Not a problem, because the modelling lamp power can be turned down and can also be set to proportional.

Ahhhhhh, now it makes sense! Many thanks :)

Was also just wondering, I'm looking for a backdrop in white and black which is also fairly portable (no scaffolding!). Any recommendations on the best material to use?

I was going to suggest the Pellier Noir for black, it's an excellent product that I saw in action a little while ago, but I see it's been discontinued:'(
If portability is the issue then I think you have a choice of muslin or muslin...

Cheers. Is vinyl any good?
