LC's 52 Shoehorns for 2016 : Week 52 - Celebration

That's well taken Tim. I've tried steam/mist and failed miserably. You'll have to give me a clue about settings.

Nice one Tim I like that
Thanks Mark.

I did at least know it was a safety valve and a lovely shot of one too.
Ta. I was quite pleased with it, it's an unusual angle.

Train shot of the year. Clearly interesting FG detail plus green wheels in BG ... smoke, steam ... a beaut.
Ta @d00d Not sure if it's my train shot of the year, I prefer the one for technology, but I do like it for the variety in the shot.

I don't think I did anything particularly special, just a fast enough shutter to freeze some of the steam (the jet of steam is being ejected at high pressure)

Simple - nicely captured Tim! Interesting subject and technically accomplished to convert it from the eye to the screen... brill! (y)
Thanks Paul.

:agree: Lovely shot for Simple (y)
Thanks Jill

That's a pretty cool sign! So for the theme it's one of the best choices so far... I think you've captured it well enough, maybe a slightly different crop/angle to avoid the lamp post in the background but otherwise good job. (y)

Interesting sign Tim, interesting background story too :)

But like Paul, I'd prefer not to see the lamppost in the back ground, a slap with the clone tool or healing brush, will soon sort that.

Cheers Chris & Paul.
I guess I should have removed the lamp post then. I actually left it in as a concious decision.
Due to the angle of the sun this morning, in order to get the trees and sign sufficiently exposed, I had to blow out the sky.
The TZ8 only shoots jpg, so the sky is actually a composite bringing the image back to what the eye could see, but the camera couldn't capture.

Looks good to me Tim :)

You are correct, not a great image :D

For me being honest, not upright, exposure a bit iffy, DoF too deep etc... but theme wise spot on of course, and actually love these signs when done by the local schools :)
To be fair, the left hand side of the post is straight, but there is sufficient distortion that all the other verticals are off though.
And achieving a shallow DoF with the TZ8's sensor is erm, challenging...

But it's not my greatest shot :)

Hi Tim ....love the kids addition to that sign, what a good idea, I've not seen one like that before. Maybe a different composition would be better, but it fits the theme perfectly.
I wanted trees rather than semis behind the sign and managed it to a fair extent.
Standing back a bit more may have helped, but that would have involved being in the middle of a main road during the rush hour \o/

Ahhhh good point... maybe you could have stood on a box to be move level :D

I quite like this Tim, with the angle you took the photo you wouldn't of got the post and sign 'straight' but suits the theme for me

Spot on theme Tim and well done in not blowing the sky highlights. (The sign should of course have read "Skool Ahead" ... education has gone downhill since wot it was in my day).

I'm massively behind on comments - sorry!
Sign(s) - ticks the box theme wise Tim, as you've said and has been mentioned - not one of your best from a creative POV. Nothing much wrong technically, but the distant lamp post and to a degree the distortion could both have been sorted in PP.

Still - as I well know as I'm also catching up, sometimes you've just got to get something submitted and move on! :)

Good effort with sign, taking the time to fix the sky was worth the effort I think.

We have lots of these designed by kids all around where we live nicely spotted and certainly fits the theme

Week 21 - Size

On arrival at the Watercress Line yesterday evening I was expecting to the the 6 carriages and large 9F locomotive awaiting passengers on the evening Real Ale Train (no I wasn't drinking, I help behind the bar!)
So quite a surprise to see almost the smallest of the Mid Hant's steam locos (the smallest is Thomas) standing in the station with just 1 carriage.

It could have done with being shot at f/5.6 or f/8 really, there was plenty of light.

That's nicely taken Tim - I always struggle not to blow the sky when handling vastly contrasting levels like this. Really like that striking bright red and all those rivets.

That's certainly an imposing engine Tim!
Nice PoV and colourful with it.

Like the shine/reflections on the loco and the details, well caught

Hi Tim

Sign is simple but I really like it ... never have guessed the sky was fake. :)

Size ... a big one I'm sure with its blunt front end. The signs on the front suggest size, but they're not easy to read.

Must admit Tim, strange looking locomotive but the theme suits this well, I like the reflection on the left hand side

You should have seen the first couple of attempts ;)

The beauty of RAW Carl :)

That's an unusual looking train engine. You done exceptionally well with the dark engine foreground against the bright sky background

Interesting comments on the loco.
It's a tank engine running in reverse and not particularly large (though I suppose the low PoV does make it look quite large)
The signs on the end, @d00d are simply warnings about overhead wires (as this loco would have run under the wires whilst in British Railways employ).
You've all seen this loco before, week 7 using a pinhole camera

Some great detail in there TIm it looks a slightly odd engine with the angled sides

and I said front end when I'm looking at her rear, just shows how much I know about trains. :D

Thanks Mark. It's the PoV that makes it look different.

Nice capture Tim, although not understanding the subject it doesn't scream "small" to me. I assumed before reading that it was big :) Nicely shot mind.
I guess regardless of the size you thought it was, it fits 'size' as a theme :)

I will educate the lot of you in the ways of the railway ;)

Week 26 : Flora

POBD this week for Flora.
Taken on my phone, to be honest I have no idea what the flowers are, but I thought they looked nice against the greenery, so...

Week 27 : Activity

The July London Anime & Gaming Convention was held in Holloway on the 1st-3rd July.
My kids bring me along as the irresponsible adult so they can get in, the Cosplayers all seem to love having their photos taken.
For each photo permission was asked and I told each person what tags to look for on Flickr, so I hope I've done them justice.

It was hard to choose, but I actually think this one came out best

Hi Tim smashing photo of that super shiny train, it looks freshly painted,
A very pretty choice of flower for Flora, I would be tempted to do a crop on that one.
Really nice lighting on your Active shot, I've no idea who he's meant to be, but he looks good against the dark background.

That is one super shot for Activity Tim - love the vibrancy and combo of the colours and the sheen on the gloves and head.

What a great costume for activity - you kept those colours really vibrant against the dark background. I might have asked him to move so that the fire exit sign wasn't above his head, but then again asking people for their photos is something I find so nerve wracking I probably wouldn't have even noticed it!

Hi Tim

Your image for Flora is great I have no idea what flowers they are either but its still a nice image.

Active really like the light and pose the BG although darker is still a little distracting for my but I know this was probably beyond your control.

Hi Tim,
size - well, that’s one shiny train! Nicely exposed and brilliant colours and good point of view.
flora - for my taste a bit too bright and not contrasty enough.
activity - great shot, great light and very vibrant colours. My favourite of these three.
