Lady Sue's 52 ART AND RELAXATION Page 16

Black and white version for me

And as they were such a willing pair I'm sure they wouldn't have minded waiting the couple of seconds it would have taken to adjust the aperture, by which time the other person would have moved.

If I'm going out looking for candids I tend to set the aperture at around 4-5.5 so I don't have to fiddle around if I spot a likely target. After all, if you want to change to a street shot at least you have time to close down the aperture as it's not a moving target you are after.

Hope this helps :D

Nice image Sue and you've done a good job on the edit to remove the heads. A bit more time and you'd never know there was anyone there. A couple of characters you've found there and full marks for asking them to pose. I thought for a moment there was some sort of event going on, but obviously these two just like to dress up a little.

Very posh! You did well getting such good models. Do you think if you had asked you could have got them to pose against a better background? That way no extra heads maybe.

that's good, love the hats.

Thank you. As soon as I saw them I liked them.

It was a very busy corner so people were walking in front of and behind the couple all the time so I really didnt have the time to worry about settings..I didnt want a posed shot so I pointed my camera at them quickly and called out " Can I take your picture" and clicked.I would have liked to get it without them noticing but they saw me aim my camera at them.

However I really appreciate your advice on aperture settings. This was only the second time I had taken pictures of strangers in the street but I would like to do it more as I am very interested in people.

Yes they just seemed to be a couple of eccentric individuals. There was no-one else dressed like them.

Thank you Charlie. I did get a couple of other shots of them later on as they walked round the town but they werent as close. It would have been good to get another shot without all the other people but never mind. I was quite happy with the shot.

Well done Sue.
The full length B&W for me and you've done a really good editing job on the heads.

Not sure about the railings in the background - they really seem to be leaning, but I think that if you straightened the photo to get them vertical your couple would be on a slope.

Thank you Sarah. I did straighten the picture as much as I could but the railings were old. They were round an old churchyard and I think they leaned anyway. I didnt really look well at the bacjgound but looking at it in the pictures I now want to go back and have a better look as it has a pretty archway and some gravestones.

I like it Sue, I prefer the colour, but as you say that bag is a pain. Agree about that head in the background too...; but well done for getting out and having a go.

Well done on spotting - and capturing this couple, Sue. What great costumes! And well done on getting them to pose for you. :)

It's great to have several versions and I love all of them for different reasons. I like the colour because it defines the costumes better, and the h&s crop because I like h&s crops, the full lenth b&w because you can see more of the cosumes, and the pp'd background because it gets rid of the distractions. So, a really great Street experience from you.:clap::clap:

Thanks. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I still wasnt very confident about pointing the camera at people who could see me but I will have another go at it soon.

Thanks Jean. I was lucky to catch them cause I cant stand for long. I just stopped at a busy corner in Colchester and they came along.

I was looking around for a photo for this week and had been taking photos of speed signs, speed cameras and warnings but then I came across this scene. The words are from the report of an accident that happened near that spot. I dont know if it was the same one.Comments and criticsm appreciated. This is only the second time I have added text to a photo so I would appreciate advice on how I could have done it better.

Thats a clever concept and well executed for Speed...if anythinga tiny bit more space between the pole and the frame might benefit for me but that is really nit picky!

The words lift the shot for me out of the ordinary into more a story - so thumbs up here!

I like all your street shots...and I'm torn between the first colour version and the very cleverly edited final version!

Good spot and a great portrait shot! :)

An all to common sight these days Sue, super idea for speed and a good reminder of just how dangerous our road system is. It would make a good advert shot for a RTA campaign.

Thank you

Thank you. And congratulations on your 10,000 posts. I'm just coming up to my first 1000.

very poignant and a unique take on the subject :clap:
top marks for that
and nothing wrong with the way you constructed it either
even think that mono works given the sombre nature of your message
hat off to you this week!

like that ..you have a good imagination and I think mono fits the poem

Thank you both. I dont often do mono but I felt it was such a sad photo. It didnt look the same in colour

Sue, that is a great image, very poignant. As has been said above, an all too common sight these days:'(
I like the text added to the image too. Well captured. Iain

I agree with this almost verbatim. :)

Great edit on 'Street' taking the other faces out. Street is quite simple, how did it look in colour? Was there much colour in the flowers?

Thank you. I see flowers at the side of the road and think about all the family grief. I think these were for a teenager. very sad.

Thank you. I think you mean the speed picture when you talk about the flowers. They were dead and didnt have much colour at all, otherwise I may have left their colour in and made the rest black and white.

WOW now that has some impact (no pun intended).
Beautifully processed and very poignant.

your 'speed' shot is great.. powerful, thought provoking and very nicely processed

really nice shot, but I think it would be a bit better without the words written over it as the photo speaks for itself

Thanks .I agree that it speaks for itself but I think the text tells the story.

Very nice and to the point well done
Thank you

Very very clever Sue.
A poignant image, sensitively captured and perfect processing. The text adds to it and it has just the right level of opacity.
I'm not too sure about where the "w" crosses the speed limit sign, it's just a touch intrusive for me, but in the overall scheme of things that's a very petty complaint.

but then I came across this scene

Not sure what the words are doing as they're not really adding anything for me. Take them away though and that would have been a pretty powerful take on the theme. Top stuff! I feel a little chill looking at it.

Your Speed photo tells such a poignant story, Sue. You can look at it and imagine the grief, anger and sadness the victim's family are going through, and then the text opens the story up to another level - the newspaper reports, police reports, inquests, etc. A very clever take on the theme, and beautifully executed. Well done.

Thank you Sarah. I see what you mean about the "w". I hadnt done stuff with text before and was trying to move it around to make it look interesting.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked it even if you were not keen on the text

Very clever Sue. A very poingnant story. I like what you've done with it and it works for me. If I'm being picky, I agree with John, a little more space on the left.

After taking several pictures of bunches of roses and men carrying them and not liking any of them much I finally settled for this one of my son and daughter in laws old dog getting a present. C and C appreciated.

Looks more like teased to me Sue :) Poor old thing (the dog not you! ;)). Nicely exposed and good interpretation. Problem with this is your processing for me which has left a halo all the way round the dog and hand (sounds like a pub!). It's a tricky selection to make, how does the original look?

Sorry, Sue, but the pp doesn't work at all for me.

Sorry, Sue, but the pp doesn't work at all for me.

Thank you for the comments. I wasnt that pleased with the pp myself. I will see if I can do a better job on it tomorrow and I will post the original. I selected the dog and hand with the magnetic selection tool in Elements and blurred the background using gaussian blur. The halo was worse and I tried to get rid of it, unsuccessfully. I'm off out today but will have a go at improving it tomorrow. By the way please dont feel sorry for the dog- she is the most spoilt dog I have ever known.:)

I'm sure the dog gets lots of presents .. wonder what she was thinking ... "is that all I'm getting !"

Very dramatic shot for speed, very well put together.

Look forward to seeing the original dog shot.
