I've run out of space on my time capsule, so I'm looking for something with more space for my backups. As it will only be connected to my iMac I don't need the wireless aspect, which was great when I had a laptop, but seems to be a bottle neck with my iMac.

As I'm going wired I'd like to get the full benefit of the increased speed, so I'm thinking FireWire 800 (my iMac is the one before they implemented thunderbolt) and 7200rpm drives, the two drives that seem to meet these requirements are LaCie D2 Quadra and G-Tech G-Drive. Does anyone have experience of either of these drives? Or indeed recommendations for other models.

We're they their consumer ones, or the ones marketed at pros?

I've had a mixed bag with LaCie in the past , 2 x rugged drives, which are great, taken loads of abuse and 2 consumer network spaces, one has been OK and the other failed, but customer survive was good and it got replaced.

I guess another question is, what are people's experiences with G-Tech customer support?

Thanks. No they've worked fine so never had the need to, what were they like inside? I opened up the Network Space, which was a bit tricky.

theyre a bit picky if they dont get ejected properly too, if finder crashes for example the volume becomes un-mountable and needs to be recovered with 3rd party software then reformatted.

basically the HD is supported at each corner by a tiny bit of rubber which i doubt does much to absorb shock. at least in my opinion. but then the concept of rugged drives is a bit odd anyway as a substantial drop (from a desk) will still kill an active drive. but im rambling now.. lol

have some pics :D

I didn't think they would be anything too special, but they've taken a beating over the years and still work fine, so I'm happy.

As no one else had any opinions on either drive, I've just ordered the G-Tech G-Drive, I'll post a review on the review section when I've used it a bit.
