Kit sobbery

First picture I had published in a national magazine 40D (crop body) with sigma lens
My normal camera 1D series
The last picture that had 3 people in tears (in a nice way :razz: ) 300D with a £60 tamron lens make of that what you will :lol:

I don't care what I use or what others use as, its the results that count!
 
It has always been possible to take the snobby path to photography.

when I first looked at the club scene in the 50's there was every sort of clique imaginable. Those who entered the advanced competitions were more interested in photography than cameras, but still looked down on those who made prints smaller than 20x 16.

Others came in to each monthly meeting to boast about their latests kit... of course they only showed prints in open competitions as they never advanced beyond the beginner level.

There were interminable arguments about which was the best lens and camera.

Then there were the chaps who would argue as to the relative merits of bromoils and platinum prints, or the best way to intensify with uranium.

Boasting and one-upmanship has always flourished amongst photographers.

Though if you click with the right clique ... who cares ?

I really don`t give a damn what people use,if they enjoy what they do and whatever they use gets the results they like,what on earth does it matter what kit they have.

nah - we've done vehicles on another thread. Both mine are group 20 insurance (one motorbike, one car)

I think there is a bit of a mis-quote here - having looked at the thread linked to in the first post, what someone says is not that "they wouldn't talk to a 400D owner" but that they were more likely to talk to a 5D owner because they thought that there a better chance that the 5D owner would by more interested in photography. I can kind of follow that reasoning.

I don't really see the snobbery in the first thread to complain about.

Well worth a read.
 
What others think is only of value to us if we respect their opinion. A fool is a fool, whether they suffer from playground snobbery or not ;)

In my experience here, knowledge is freely shared and no one has belittled my questions so that helps me as I want to learn. :thinking:

By that American dude who has a regular column? Yeah, I thought he hit the nail on the head in many respects. I've learnt a lot of really useful stuff from some very learned people on here, but there's also a hell of a lot of crap spouted too, not least of all by myself :D
 
I think there is a great deal of snobbery around.

When I'm out with my friends doing landscape photography, they'll be there with their pro-Hasselblads laughing at my amateurish 5D Mark 2.

It's just something you learn to live with really, although they do make me stand two metres away from them in the pub when we're done.

I know my place :(
 
I wouldnt say it was snobbery but more of upgrading as we all started out small at one time, my first digital camera was a fuji s6900 and I adored that camera as for DX and FX you go for what you need and dont try to keep up with the Jones'es..........I havent spoken to anyone here that has put me down because of the equipment I own more the other way round the people with great kit normally praise our shots and enthusiasm, if I was good enough to earn my living out of photography I would have both and use them accordingly like the members who do earn their living from them, after all you wouldnt see a mechanic in a Ferarri dealership using tools from the pound shop its the same in all trades good equipment generates income and generally is more robust for the job.....ok time to get off me soapbox:lol:

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Well you can remind your mates that a Hasselblad wasn't the camera they used for the first official portrait of an American President taken with a digital camera, was it now? So there! :lol:

I would be guilty of thinking along the lines of I would never buy a crop lens. However, that's not through any hint of snobbery, as I do own a crop frame camera. But I also own a full frame camera, and if I'm going to spend my hard earned on another lens, it makes sense to buy one that can be used on both bodies, otherwise I'm restricting my photo taking options by 50%.

TP is a reflection of real life (but should never be confused with IMHO) and I ahve seen and been a victim of equipment snobbery in the past.. It happens and still does out there in the real world... So would surely happen here as well now and then..

Just one of those things. I think its ignorant and stupid and whatever...

I would count myself lucky if a person with that opinion chose not to talk to me. The likelihood is that I wouldn't want to give them the time of day either.

I think this is where the thread potentially starts to get into problems.

Personally I don't see the logic, I currently have a 500D, I'm lucky that I could afford a 1D/5D but at the moment my skills don't warrant it. I am an amatuer photographer who is learning from scratch after a long abscence from photography.

There were valid reasons for me chosing a cheaper albeit very good (IMO) camera but it does not eman that I am less interested in photography. I'm very interested, I'm here to learn and absorb information, I'll talk to everyone and anyone who'll give me advise and pass on bits I pick up to those starting on the forum and asking the same questions that I asked not so very long ago!

It could be argued that those with the FF more expensive camera's have reached a plateau or got bored as have been posted recentlythat may be less interested in talking photography or sharing their knowledge...

The point about 'snobbery' would be to then go on to tell others that is the only thing to do and look down on those that haven't follow your advice wouldn't it?

I think the trouble is that we are all likely to have some sort of equipment preference (whether realised or not) and tend to consider those that don't share that preference to be less informed/capable simply because they don't agree.
 
I never got a chance to reply to DaveBridges thread, but it was a stupid comment. The onslaught he got as a result though was waaaaaay OTT. Playground bullying at its best :D

I think he was trying to make a point, but failed miserably to get the actual point across....

Either way, he took a bashing for it :lol:

Actually, I think we should leave the young chap and his fatuous comment out of this discussion, as I think he hadn't really thought it through properly, and did try to make amends for it before the thread was closed. I really don't think he meant to sound as snobbish as it appeared. :thumbs:

I didn't read the comment in the actual thread, so I didn't mean to specifically target that person. I was mainly basing my opinion on the interpretation expressed in the OP here. :thumbs:
