Is it me or is kit snobbery on this forum becoming more prevalent?

A good example the other day was an infamous thread where the OP stated he wouldnt talk to a 400D owner on the street as he wouldnt be as enthusiastic about his hobby than a 5D owner.

There also seems to be more talking down crop sensor kit and crop only lenses, where the lenses being talked about are some of the best lenses out there, but 'best avoided as they are crop only'? It never used to be like this!
 
I (and no doubt the rest of the mods) will be watching this one with interest.

I hope you're not right Jim. I think one of the issues raised against "crop only" lenses is that they will need to be changed if someone moves to full frame. But, I have seen similar comments a number of times.
 
Lol, have I touched a nerve? Sorry, its just something I've noticed recently, maybe I'm over sensitive? :lol:
 
when you have so many people in one place (like here) you will always get some who are snobs, some who aren't, some who are cool, some who aren't.

It's a statistics thing not a change in perception thing.

I hope you get the bite you're looking for :lol:

Sorry, but I don't see it. Perhaps I'm a bit thick skinned; the occasional stupid comment, often meant in a weird humorous way, does not detract from good debates over the merits of different bit of kit.

I would always talk to someone with a 5D / full frame sensor, as they may take pity and buy me a cup of coffee or beer as I'm so poor I can't afford stuff like them.

thats not snobbery but just the way you choose to look at it. I'd read that comment as 'if you want to go full frame in the furture consider saving some expense and future proofing your kit'
 
generally odds are someone with expensive kit is more likely to be a photographer than someone with cheap, its not snobbery its probabilities. There are many find photographers on entry level kit and many appauling ones on expensive kit. Take a step back and think about the numbers
 
I think most people make such comments "in jest", but it seldom reads that way after the Nth time you've seen a 'wasn't funny in the first place' joke comment about a particular camera or lens etc...

Also you can't afford to take objective commentary that is factually correct too personally on forums I find. For example:
"A sigma zoom is never going to be as sharp as a Nikon f1.4 24mm prime" is factually accurate, but its context may be inappropriate in a thread started by a beginner, for example.

Not sure that amounts to snobbery, more a misunderstanding on behalf of the poster as to the appropriate context of a reply and if it IS kit snobbery then at least people are a lot easier to ignore online than they are in person :)

(Trust me, I get a lot of it, I use a Fuji)
 
i am sure you get the "mine is bigger than yours" brigade but i have witnessed none of the snobbery you mention..
I dont think anyone would be so narrow minded to think the amount of spare cash you have is somehow relative to how much you enjoy any activity...

Maybe you are Paranoid --- do you hear voices "lol" :lol:

and if no one replies is it because i own a Kodak Zoom :D
 
lol only last week I was poking fun at those walking round Focus at NEC with huge lenses!

So no, please don't get hung up on kit, it's how you use it that matters ;)
 
The issue about crop only lenses has been around since the first time a crop sensor was available - I've certainly not seen any increase in this type of discussion and the number of these comments.

As for general snobbery, I don't think it is on the increase per say - but as always a few individuals may get over excited by the fact they have one of the best cameras available and start looking down on others - and this then may come across in posts.

Photography has always had a touch of snobbery - I remember as one of the early DSLR adopters the type of comments I got from people at the local camera club. I think the word toy was used once. Gear does not make a photographer.
 
I understand what you mean but don't generally see it. I also know the comment you mean about crop cameras and it wasn't made particuarly well. When such a thing is usually stated about ef-s lenses its qualified with if you intend to go full frame, which many of us don't! Then again there is the constant prescence of the canon L brigade, but they are everywhere! (I must stop planning my 70-200 f4L purchase...)

Everyone has to start from somewhere, most places I read someone would be considered foolish if they were to get a 7d/5dII as their first camera. I only changed from a 400d to a 40d because it felt more balanced/better in the hand otherwise I would have been quite happy trying to push what I could from the 400d as my lenses were still fairly budget.

I don't think it's just photography, there's an element of snobbery in just about every pursuit that costs money.

It's all part of the fun - for example, there's nothing like listening to a bunch of Ducati owners big themselves up confidently before giving them a sound thrashing on an 8 year old GSXR. "Expensive bikes, Ducati's. I had no idea they had a reverse gear. ;)"

Who gives a toss? ive won a couple of competitions with a compact & prosumer over the top Dslrs and L lenses.

Its the person behind the camera.
One other thing photographers should realise is when people ask a question, answer it.

Everyone was a beginner once

Haha! I must admit, I did the exact same thing...

But yeah, there is always going to be people out there who are snobbish to others with 'worse' kit then theres, it's just the way it is. You find it with nearly every sport/hobby..
 
TBH I haven't noticed much snobery on here at all, the ocasional commetn but nothing half serious.

I'ld looked at a couple of other forums before settling here where unless you knew what you weer doing you were frowned on and to expect a friendly response was unheard off, I didn't stick around.

So far on TP (admittedly I've only been here a month) there are a lot of people from all walks of life and levels of knowledge/experience/skill who aren't afraid to voice their views ina friendly manner to help each other out...

Snobbery, pfft, I don't speak to anyone who doesn't use Kodak disposables, they're just being pretentious :D
 
I can't say I've noticed much either... Personally, I couldn't give a fig what people are using. If they're happy with what they've got then it's nobody's place to look down their noses at someone elses choice. :)

I have a friend who's an out-and-out Canon snob and happily admits it... I can't fathom his attitude but it's part of who he is. :)

Something I don't get involved in as they are just tools to me I chose Nikon along time ago and have stuck with it due to some heavy investment in glass and although other brands do have some cracking kit, Nikon get there eventually!

Well, I have a Zenit 12XP yet I don't think my attitude has changed. I realise not everyone is lucky enough to be able to afford such a sublime and sexy piece of soviet engineering. :D
