Critique required Kell's 52 in 22 - week 52. Showcase

A well composed image Kell, I am partial to the B&W though...

Alley - A great set of images, each with their own merit. I really like the last one of the set in B&W

Heavy - I prefer the last of three showing the detailed view

Light - Hard to choose between the two, I think the warm tones of the colour version just pips it, regardless the shapes, shadows and overall framing make them both good candidates

Week - 09 Damp - plus reflections...

I'm only in the office Tues-Thurs so took this on my way home on Thursday night in Regent's Park. Typically, once the theme was announced this week, it's been bone dry here, so I didn't get the chance to restage this near me and improve it at all.

It was dark, obvs, and my little Canon G5 X (good though it is) struggled to take anything hand-held in these conditions.

But despite the obvious noise (10,000 ISO), I do like the overall atmosphere of both of these. They do both look a little better before uploading and are probably right on the line of being usable - with the second one just crossing over it.

The nod also goes to the first one as you can see more of the shape of the guy's head because of how he's positioned under the streetlight, but I did like the car lights in the second one - even though it's way more noisy for some reason.

Anyway, I preferred them to the other one I took this weekend.

Have to say that I like the laundry one more than the street ones.

Having said that, it's a like MORE rather than a dislike for the street ones which work very well (IMO). As you say, the Nod (you said it first!!!) goes to the first one with its extra head detail. I think the exposure's pretty spot on for the scene and the high ISO noise adds to the grittiness too. Fills the technique brief too!

First one is best IMO. I like the gritty feel and the flagged reflections certainly say damp.

1st shot for damp is a cracking image as not fussed about 10,000 iso, it makes me think of an old Hitchcock movie. Might look good in B&W too.

Thanks Dave - I originally processed it in Black and White but...

  • I've been doing that a lot lately and it felt like I was going down a well-trodden path.
  • Even though there isn't much colour in it, the3re was just enough (IMO) to keep it as shot.
Here's a screen shot of the B&W

Now that one I do love, makes it more Hitchcock and eerie.

Yep - good shots but the mono does it for me :)

I do really like this image, cannot get Anton Karas's Harry Lime theme from the Third Man out of my head. It's very atmospheric and in B&W, without the distraction of the car lights, the faux gaslights and the railings become a tunnel that draws you down to the man.

Definitely the street ones for me - I see enough washing ha ha!

These are lovely shots for the theme. I love the reflections in the wet pavement. Top one for me as you can see the figure better.

I think you've taken a great picture that fits the theme and tech really well. The high ISO adds to the grittiness as others have said.

I'm torn between the b&w and the colour versions. I like both but, for me, I am leaning towards the colour.

I love this low key shot... it really is atmospheric. The colour version has the edge for me.

Nice image that fits the theme really well. I prefer the B&W without the car, it has a real 'gritty' street feel to it, and is sort of timeless. Nicely done

3rd Man and the "You're never alone with a Strand" fag adverts. Shades of the end of Cassablanca too but with puddles!

I have to say the fun of the themes is to go out and take the image after it has been set.

A quality Image for theme and tech.

Thanks all.

I actually went back in to the second one and adjusting the noise reduction, so it looks more usable now.

It was suffering quite badly from colour noise on the first upload.

Those street shots are great. I prefer the first one, but both good!

Great street shots even with the unavoidable noise, prefer the first one, the second I see the car more of a distraction with the red light breaking up a mainly b&w scene. Big tick in the box for the technique with your reflections.

Week 10 - As seen through a window.

I spotted my submitted shot a few weeks ago and as soon as I saw the theme, knew where I was heading.

But while I was there, I also captured these.

As seen through a window...presumably, nothing.

You’ve chosen the best one.
Quite interesting objects behind that window.

#1 appeals to me as a subject but I can see why you chose #3 for the interesting collection. Is it a shop or just someone with an obsession?

Three nice pix. No2 for me :)

3rd image for me as well, loads of interest in window contents and good colours.

All good shots Kell. I like your chosen one. I might have been tempted to crop into the image and just have a bit of the blue window frame as a image border.
I'd like to see all of the figurines up close.

Apologies for the non-commenting week, been a bit busy hence only getting round to uploading LAST week's theme now.

Week 11 - TECH

I was stuck for ideas, so had a drive around the local business park as I know there are a few tech companies there.

1.

Car Chargers - quite liked the blue/purple light on these.

5D3_9210 by Kell Lunam-Cowan, on Flickr

2.

Origin doors and windows - arguable if it fits into being a tech company...

5D3_9204-HDR by Kell Lunam-Cowan, on Flickr

3.

This is a tech company - they carry out material testing here, but I'd argue the shot (while I like it) doesn't scream tech.

5D3_9201-HDR by Kell Lunam-Cowan, on Flickr

4.

This one literally says TECH on it, but it wasn't my favourite.

5D3_9195-HDR2-2 by Kell Lunam-Cowan, on Flickr

5. But in the end I preferred these two - even though they'd fit last weeks theme too..

OLD TECH

And my submission as I preferred the addition of the person walking through frame.

I agree - the lady walking into shot lift it very well ;)

I reckonj I wouldn't come out fo there without a few items :D

Great shots (as usual,)

The lady in the shot makes it much more interesting.

All fit the theme nicely. I like the blue of the car chargers, but I do like your chosen shot best and the lady adds to it.
