Hi All,

First of all, i'm slightly unsure if this is the right place to be posting this. However, the content relates to post-processing etc... so I hope it is. (If not, an admin can feel free to move the topic and delete this paragraph).
*
I am sharing this idea with you (might be silly of me if you think it's a good idea, ha ha) because I would like some feedback.
*
I have a selection of borders that I have created in all different colours/formats/styles etc over the years.
*
It suddenly dawned on me that I must have spent endless hours reading tutorials on*how to implement these borders/watermarks/copyright/titles etc. This made me realise that others (novices) must go through the same problems.
*
Now that I have this selection built up at home, I am thinking of putting together an eBook that explains how to create your own borders and implement these using Photoshop.
*
My target audience are likely to be newbies to Photography/Amateurs of Photoshop*that have their own personal websites for friends/family to view their photos (just like me). They will not be experienced users like you guys.... they are likely to have limited knowledge of photoshop and find it time consuming adding borders to their photos.
*
The contents will include:
·*** eBook - Tutorial explaining how to create borders and implement them (turning them into an action).
·*** All the borders (which I am currently creating a larger bank of them right now) I am going to aim for around 35 - 50.
All users will have to have an edition of Photoshop (that can support actions).
*
I will not be charging for the tutorial, more so the borders... which are time-consuming to add individually (especially if they are all the same).

My question is, do you think this would likely sell for £5 ($10) per download? (it would be emailed instantly).
*
Any feedback would be appreciated. (Once I have fine-tuned everything over the next week or so, I would be willing to send anyone who is interested a copy of the 'complete package'.*Similar to a*BETA testing session....).
*
Thanks in advance,
Amnesia

I'm not really sure how many people would be willing to pay to be honest...... in the tutorials section there are instructions on how to make your own, and a few members have uploaded the code to make a variety of different borders. Other people have helped improve them, and as a result there are a number of different variations all floating around for free. I suppose it depends how good they are! But remember, there's a lot of free stuff on the internet! I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but it's the way I see it! Good luck with it though!

Chris

Cheers Chris, honesty is all I want to hear :) so thanks for the input!

I will be putting the package on my website anyway, regardless whether I charge or not. Just doing a bit of research first... That's all.

I'm just looking for peoples reactions :)

I guess if it was a simple, all-in-one program... It might be different.

Your problem is that your target audience don't reall exist from what I see. Anyone that has photoshop would probably know, or beable to find out how to create and put borders on.

The people who would want borders putting on and may pay a few quid for a selection are people that mainly won't have photoshop.

Thanks Dougie.

I think I may need to put a little more thought into this.

I have seen a few programs that resize, add borders and a copyright notice on. And they are very basic programs... Maybe that is more something I should be looking to achieve? Might be a long way off though, seeing as I nil coding knowledge!

At least one of the magazines have published borders on CD with detailed instructions on how to use them, I can't remember offhand which one though. I do like the idea though, there's a huge amount of processing capability I have no clue how to use.

I think your target 'purchaser' would be more likely to have Elements than the full blown photoshop, people with their own blog or website are likely to be the sort of people who would look up and use the free tutorials that are on the web, or if they are like me and are useless even with Elements 6 they will not worry about borders at all even the downloadable ones!!

If you have a site it would still be worth you putting the tutorial and some basic ones on as freebies then perhaps just charge for the better more intricate ones. The other use for them would be to drive traffic to your site and get people looking around it for other things that may bring in some income.

Thanks for the replies all.

It has helped me a lot!

:)

I have been into photography for over 30 years and I don't use Photoshop for the pure reason of the learning curve!

I do have in my plans to start to learn to use it; especially as I am going to start my own gallery (as a side business and an early retirement plan).

Of course, free sites are aplenty, so too are free tutorials; but this doesn't make up for the quality sites and information that anyone would need.

So, if you're going to charge for this then you have to make sure it delivers on quality, substance and support .. for this (and since you have your own web site) may be you can have a chat forum for users to exchange ideas, for you to help out a bit here & there, and for you to get ideas on how to develop your packaged ebook.

Personally, I wouldn't mind forking out £5 on an ebook that would get me up to speed with Photoshop borders & watermarks ... especially as application in point is over £500! A small price to pay, if the quality & substance is right.

Good luck whichever way you go.

An interesting post there Wail.

Thanks for the input.

I am going to spend some time developing the eBook a bit along with the borders.

Either way, the package will be available shortly!
