Ok I should have asked this earlier I suppose but here goes. I have been asked to do a few shots for a guy I know who has just replaced all his disco kit, he just wants the images put onto disc to show customers what kit he has etc. Tonight he is doing a dummy run in a hall so he can time how long he takes to set up, and check out all is working. I was just wondering if there were some rough settings I could use to start off with for capturing the lighting units without ending up with just a bright glare

I have a 50D, 580ex, nifty 50 and a 70-200 f4L, as well as sturdy tripod and remote. There is no rush to take the shots as he has the hall for the evening, so I can adjust one side or the other of any any suggested settings.

Thanks in advance

To get a 'nicely' exposed shot you'll want a balance between the ambient (in this case the disco lights) and any fill flash. If you expose purely for the lights then everything else will be underexposed.

If the hall has a white (or fairly light) ceiling then bounce the flash directly from the ceiling to act as flat fill. You're likely to be working at 1/20 or 1/40 to expose the lights so just adjust everything from that point onwards. If it helps just take a pic without the flash until you like the exposure of his lights and then add the flash after.

Like anything, it's salt and pepper to taste. Hope that helps.
