John's Photo 52 - Week 27 Added (10th July) - Highlight

The reshoot is a success, not sure about the Dark image.

A different angle and perhaps a bit of space between subject and background might have been worth a try.

Lovin the squirel, superb.

Thanks Hyster, that's a good suggestion

Here's a variation on the dark idea I had. I think it's better, but was actually a test shot for the 10 stop ND filter that arrived on Monday. I wish I'd thought about this one instead...

Longing - I love the idea, very catchphrase. I think a printed font would have been better

Longing Reshoot - I think the choice of font is wrong.

Dark - Clever idea, and I quite like the slightly blurred effect you have

Dark Reshoot - Good positioning, I've had my 10stop ND for a while and haven't actually got around to using it in anger yet, this inspires me to get out there.

First re-shoot much better:clap:
Second re-shoot...Excellent...:clap::clap::clap:
First Dark...not working for me...:gag:
Second Dark...better but not there yet...

But for 4 shots in one week...:notworthy:

Well done John...

Thanks Simon, I'll look at the font. The 10 stop isn't an easy tool to use. I tried it on the moon, and ended up shooting a 34 minute exposure... very odd looking pic of the moon it was too...

Thanks... I need to thing more about Dark... not quite sure how to get what I want... the imagination can come up with the ideas, but it's no use when it comes to implementation :D

Hi John :D

Longing reshoot - a great improvement, love the DoF but the font feels a bit overdone so the letters,to my tired brain, aren't immediately obvious.

Surprise - now that's a cracker of a shot - perfect timing, great exposure, perfect DoF, spot on composition and you even got a catchlight in the eye :clap::clap: :woot:

Dark - the amount of times I've tried to get around using the tripod and I've never liked the results :( I love the conception of this though). The reshoot is good though and the positioning is well thought out.

Well done for all the effort you've put in this week (I didn't even manage a reshoot)

Thanks very much Jill . I think you and Simon are right, the font is a bit too fancy. Ah well, another oppo to reshoot longing and dark will come I'm sure :D..

Love the 2 reshoots, although the text is hard to read. Dark is a little blury imo but what its lacking is made up for with the ND test shot

Thanks very much Ruth, I tried to go for a grand font, but it was too much... Dark needs some work, but I'm saving that for the next reshoot.

This theme produced quite a bit of head scratching, which ought to sound quite odd really, simple, in theory, should be quite ... well simple ... to do right... Wrong!!!

I spent quite some time :bang: and  trying to come up with something... Then, after I'd finished playing with my macro rig thingy... and was walking through the dining room, it hit me like a grand piano... Well, to be precise, my eyes alighted on the keyboard, simple black and white repeated pattern... Cool thought I and set out to take a shot..

I had some technical difficulties with my 300AFD, for some reason the AF assist beam, wasn't either a) assisting, or for that matter b) beaming...

This caused problems with the nifty, as I couldn't get it to focus properly, so I switched to the 55-250, which to be honest worked better anyway... the flash was bounced off the wall on my left.

So here we go..

Simple
IMG_5283.jpg

Lessons learned

1) Either this was just a much simpler lighting task, or I'm getting the hang of flash, I suspect it was simpler
2) Often the simplest idea can be found in the everyday around you

Very nice (simple) photo - like the DOF and lighting... and don't put yourself down - just because you have done well with the lighting doesn't mean it as an easier subject :nono:

Face it - you have skills when it comes to flash

Firstly I need to say, lucky you for owning a piano...I would love one!

The shot is nice and I too like the DoF on this one. As someone who is still soooo new to all this I admire anyone using a flash and complicating the issue.

well done!

Verrrrrry good, I really like that shot. And Very simple indeed

Thanks Shorty.

Thanks DS... I guess my flash skills are growing, no matter how infuriating it can get at times. It would help if I could get a better flash with more control, but @£34 it was hard to argue with this one...

Thanks Angela.
It's not a real piano, much as I think we'd all like one. It's an electronic piano, with a full size keyboard that behaves the same and sounds like one. So all the benefits, plus being able to lift it and move it with just one person, and none of the cons, it doens't need tuning and doesn't take up half the house :D.

ok, my turn to catch up then;
Longing: nice concept, and love the reshoot. definetly prefer it! :)

Dark: I agree that the re-shoot is an improvement. would like to see the original idea shot with a tripod though. I imagine you might be able to get the shot you were after. i know what you mean about the shutter sounding much louder when everything is quite. i've experienced that a couple of times.

Simple: fantastic shot. love the mono feel and the DOF is spot on! :)

Reminds me of a photo series I took for my Photography GCSE demonstrating a technical element of photography (I chose DoF).

Nice simple photo

Thanks Simon. That series sounds interesting. I did something a bit like this with my flute when I got the camera, but I understand the camera a lot better now, so may go back and redo all my instrument shots.

Thanks James. I will reshoot Dark (just waiting for the card :D) with the tripod and see what comes out... Just hope I don't wake anyone up with the noise of the shutter who then trips over the legs taking them and the camera flying down the stairs :'(. I did actually desaturate Simple, there may have been a little CA on the catchlights (is that the correct word here ?? ) along the keys, so to remove any colour variation... remove the colour :D.

i love the idea of simple, you have exposed it beautifully but i can't help thinking its lacks in composition some what. That said i really don't know what else you could have done with it

John - I love this. My fingers are itching to play on those keys. :) It's an excellent take on the theme and very well executed.

I agree with DS - just because it seemed 'easy' it doesn't mean there wasn't a lot of skill involved. Well done, and definitely another rung up the 'flash' ladder.:clap:

I know what you mean about the piano. I've got an electronic keyboard and although I don't play it very much these days, I'd hate not to have it. :)

Jean

Thanks Ruth. I tried a few different angles, both radially around the keyboard, and along it's length... this one worked the best.

Thanks very much Jean . Whilst I don't actually play the piano myself, this was a bluff call for my wife who was going on and on about learning to play it herself... so one xmas Santa turned up with it :D, she hasn't learnt yet, but my boys are both learning and it's getting used by them.

I think you've done well here, the lighting and dof are great. My only tiny crit would be that top right of the shot has some dead space in it where the keys don't fill the frame.
Mark:thumbs:

Guess it's just me this week who not put in a good photo...:(

You have got it all going on in this shot, the lighting is spot on and I'm loving the dof you got going on...

all good stuff John...:clap::clap::clap:

Nice shot John, I can sympathise with the flash, I'm struggling to learn a bit myself just now.

You've handled this well though and it fits the simple theme very well.

Thank you, I've yet to go threw all the shots, I hope I can do this week, but I'll apologise now if I don't, work is a bit mad...

Thanks very much Hyster  Flash is a whole new skill entirely, isn't it... :bang:

Wouldn't know, don't use it  although I should really as I bought a speedlite last year.

Love the crop John, DoF and white balance and it's a nice composition too :naughty: :clap::clap:

Nice idea, quite well executed! I'd personally quite like to see it from a lower angle, keys disappearing to the distance

Thanks very much Jill

Cheers Matt, I did try a lower angle, but ended up with far too much extraneous stuff in the image. I couldn't work out how to remove it cleanly, but it's something for a reshoot.

At last thought I, when I saw the theme come up, a relatively easy theme to shoot, that was shortly followed by blast... I'm going away with work, and won't be able to take my 450d with me. I did, however take my tiny Fuji A860 P&S with me. I also knew exactly what I wanted to get a shot of, this

But I changed my mind, when I had a short wander around the museums and spotted what ended up being my image. It was shot using my Jessops mini tripod (a perfect match for the A860) putting it about 3 inches off the ground. So here it is,

Line to the Museum
DSCF0062.jpg

Lessons learned
1) The Fuji is rubbish in low light without it's flash
2) There are some many linear things around, it was hard to choose one, here's a few others

one, two, three

That's a very good effort with the camera you had...:clap::clap:

I also liked to 3rd shot you had taken but not at that quality. If you ever get the chance to retake that one with you DSLR I think it would look superb...

But the one you choose has got all the things in it to make a fantastic Linear shot. I think you have pulled off a brilliant shot with the kit you were using...:woot:

ah..how good are those little compacts when you want everything in focus :)

nice work

Thank you, the tiny sensor, and very short focal length does work well for that, but, and I have tried, throwing something out of focus is a total pain...

Excellent - this shows you can adapt to difficult circumstances and still get a great shot. The strong composition really shines through - well done

Definitely prefer this one John, great choice, great perspective and definitely fits the theme :clap:

Thanks very much Jill

Well done , a great shot. As said with the set up of a DSLR it could be a real corker

in the immortal words of Gunnie Highway, Improvise, adapt, overcome! Nice job, sounds like you need a small 'travel bag' though so you can take your DSLR. I've managed to fit one in my bergan to go on Ops before now so I'm sure you can manage on a business trip! :-)

Thanks very much David. I wouldn't have been able to get the DSLR in, I went for a week with hand luggage only and had to take my laptop too, I tried to figure out a way to fit the DSLR in, but it wasn't going to go in and still get my bag on the plane...

This shot is an absolute corker!!! I like number two as well. Clarity, focus, colours all spot on!! well done
