John's Photo 52 - Week 27 Added (10th July) - Highlight

Very strong image, works well, you can almost draw a line through that shallow depth of field.

Can't think of anything negative to say about it.

Very impressive shot. DoF is great, was that in camera or was it done in PP? I love the lighting too, gives a great amount of detail

Thanks Simon, the DOF is as shot in camera.

great interpretation on the theme, and a nice clear shot. well done

Thanks Angela

This works for me, a really good piece of composition and the conversion fits the theme perfectly too.

Mark

Thanks very much Mark

Great idea and the result is stunning

Thanks very much Ruth

Thank you. I did think of doing that, but I decided I was trying to show, using the DOF, that the second was imaginary, thus the seperation. I might give that a go though... Maybe use the 55-250 and the Raynox... hmmm

awesome shot there Jon! Can't say I've ever noticed a photo with a DOF that shallow . Both the top and bottom of a 1p coin OOF? nice shot! what magnification macro filter did you use?

Thanks very much. Hmm... I'm not sure... the Raynox DCR250 is a +8 Dioptre adjustment I think . I used it on the 50mm prime, and that gives a reproduction ratio of 1:2.

Have a look in the Macro section, there's loads with shallow DOF. I took a shot of the head of a pin with the 55-250 at 250mm at min focus distance, the Raynox and 75 mm of ebay tubes. I think it was at f32 and the pinhead is only just in the DOF...

Hi John, just catching up now :)

I love your relationship shot. A great combination and very well taken too :clap:

Wish I had two pennies to rub together :D that's Poverty indeed

Great depth of field and well past my macro capabilities :clap::clap:

And you've got your motivation back and it shows

Well I think that works very well for the theme. The colour works well and the DOF is damn near spot on

Thanks very much DS

I struggled for time to get shots for this one this week. Work has been mad, the family has been keeping me busy, so I'm sure these are not the best, but...

Anyway, my first thought, hmm, laying on the ground shoot a photo up... Would work, but it might be a little dull :D. So, it then occurred to me that an umbrella is put up to stop the rain hitting you, not only that I have an umbrella with the Blue Eagles logo on it, and they are up in the air (both Eagles, and the helicopter display team). So I thought I'd attempt something I'd tried before, using a slower shutter speed with 2nd curtain flash. The bad news is this was no more successful than before.

So, when on Wednesday night, it was clear and I setup my astronomical gear for an imaging session to finish off my M81 and M82 image, the thought hit me like a ton of bricks, that the scope is always pointed up (to some degree) so I could combine the two hobbies for getting a shot of up...

So here it is,

Looking Up

Lessons learned
1) I've no clue when it comes to effects with flash
2) Getting both the scope and the stars in focus is not going to happen no matter what I do, the sheer scale of the working distances involved is beyond the DOF, so I didn't bother trying.
3) Finding time can be a real challenge, but sometimes, things just happen that make it easy.

Now that's a well thought out shot...

It's a nicely in focus and well executed...

very effective...

ooo John i like that very much :D and i dont think the stars need to be infocus - you know what they are :)

I like this image, you've done well to balance the light. I'm not sure cutting the counter weight(??) to the right of the image helps and the DoF could be slightly wider to get the whole telescope in focus. But in general the composition is good and the image really does fit nicely with this week's theme

I like this image John particularly the colour of the night sky in contrast to the telescope!!

I agree that it would have been good to just have that circular thingymebobby (technical term) completely in the picture, but it is still a great shot!!

This is very definitely up - a very long way up.

I love the shot and would also like to see the bobbly bit on the right (like Angela, I'm good on technical terms ), but it's only a minor niggle.

It's also interesting to get a peep at your other hobby - it all looks vry technical.

Lerning point 2: You'd need some biiiiiiiigggggg lens for that.

What an inspirational picture :clap::clap::clap:

I agree with the missing bit of the circular thingy but afterthought is a wonderful thing - like the way I missed the top of the beggar woman's head as I was just so happy to get a shot :D

And a perfect interpretation of the theme

I don't even want to think about the f number needed to get scope and stars in focus...imagine the noise!

Good shot the fits the theme superbly!

Wow, what a great response, that was completely unexpected (I thought is was only ok, and a bit of a rush job at that) thanks very much everyone :D.

Simon, Angela, Jean and Jill, you're right the circular bobly thingamajiggy (Counterweight) should have all been in the picture.

Simon, I was into Astro mode, and didn't even think about the DOF to include the entire scope :bang:, this was shot wide open for light gathering.

Jill, this is my imaging rig, it's designed to track the night sky, and maintain the proper orientation of the scope to the object, the motions are painful to get to grips with though :D, and even more painful to try and line up, when it's pointing almost straight up, like it was after I took this shot. The 450d goes where the black circle is at the rear of the black scope. It's going to get more complicated once I can get a decent power supply sorted as it will become fully computer controlled.

I don't know if you saw the results from this run (combined with 2 others), but if not, they can be seen here

well done on nailing the theme and an excellent photo too :)

Thanks very much Jon

Hi John!
another excellent entry for the 52! I like it a lot :) as for point two, I think that you probably could get both the equipment and stars in focus if you took a couple of shots on a tripod (one with the telescope and one without focus'd to infinity) and spent a few mins PP-ing? just an idea.

Personally, I quite like the fact that they are OOF. it's rather effective.

Nice work, and nice piece of kit! :) Love the colours!

Thanks. I did think about that, but... My PP'ing along those lines is less than poor :D. Also, given that weight of that lot.... about 30Kg once it's setup I don't move it till it's time to take it in again... I guess I could have done it the other way around, shot the stars first ....hmmm..

I'm sure that the colours will get even more garish over time as I add bits, but in the dark of night it doesn't make too much difference as you can't see the colours anyway :D

This was really tough. I had an idea when I first saw it, but it wasn't really a photo and was more of a jiggle around of letters that I photographed first... Then my second idea hit me earlier.... This was taken with the Nifty Fifty and Raynox to get a shallow DOF and lit using the onboard popup flash.

So, can you guess what this is about ?

TBH I'm not happy with it as a shot, but I'm glad I got something to show for the theme ;) No lessons from this week, other than when it seems impossible and an idea leaps up, grab it with both hands.... cos there may not be another one along later.

John the DoF is spot on and i like the fact you can make out the date / first line which give it context.

Thanks Ruth, I'm glad it came out as I intended. I actually wrote it out about 5 times and have a number of shots before I got it like that...

Dear John (:naughty:)

That's a very amusing shot . The DoF and lighting is spot on, most impressive for an OB flash, only goes to show that sometimes they are very useful.

:D Thanks Simon. I was hoping you'd find it amusing. I figured that as I was using a very short lens there would be no chance of lens shadow on the shot, and given that the page was flat, no chance of hard shadows so no need for angled or a diffuser.

This week was a difficult week, and your shot definitely meets the theme. I like the fact that whilst only part of the shot is in focus, you can make out what the rest says....I would love to know how that letter would have continued!!

Well done

Thanks Angela :D... I user the 50mm as this gives less than macro, and therefore a wider DOF than the 55-250 would have done with the intention of getting all the lettering viewable and shot it at an angle to force the date and the subject into the oof areas.

As for how it continued, well ..... I think each of us would have our own take on that....

This catching up lark is hard work :)

Poverty is great - good spin and great use of a well worn phrase - dof is great and the B&W works for me (B&W is poorer than colour)

Up: Drool - well shot and the light/expousre balance between the sky and the scope is great :) missing counterweight or not ;) and once more: Drool!!!:D

Letter: Clever and funny :) Light is nice and even and good'n'sharp where in focus :)

3 good 'uns :)

Thanks very much John. Do I get a sense of telescope envy

A great idea, the dof is spot on and you've proved that on board flash can be used to good effect too.

Mark:thumbs:

Thank you

Thanks Jean... That's just me  :D

Your spot on for this weeks theme...

Excellent use of the DOF ....I to would love to know how that letter would have continued!!
