Did a bit of DIY t'other day and this morning went to the council waste centre to get rid of the following:
3 bin bags of plaster board off cuts,
4x empty boxes which had contained a cloakroom suite,
a small pallet said boxes were delivered on
and a bag of saw dust, empty plaster bags etc.

I put them in my (4'x3') trailer to save messing my car up. When i got there the man says sorry no trade waste. Fair enough, so i asked him where i could get rid of them. He said ring the council. So i parked outside the yard and rang them. The nice lady there said there is no problem so long as they are in the boot of my car. I explained i have a nice clean car and wanted to keep it so.

Anyway i went back in and repeated what nice council ladty old me. NO problem he said but they will not take pallets.

Back to my car and in full view of "not nice skip man" decanted the waste into the boot of my estate. I kicked the pallet into submission and put that in as well.

I then drove back into the yard with the empty trailer still attached. "Not nice man" greeted me with a forced smile and duly pointed me to the correct skips to deposit the now "non-trade" household waste and wood!

I wouldnt have minded paying to dump at a trade site but changing its status from trade to household because of what you take it in is rediclulous.

Rant over...

 what a *ahem*

We had something similar... the rules at the tip where my parents live is 11 3/4 bricks (i have no idea why :bang:) and we had one small bag of rubble, plus some grass cuttings.. bloke got on his high horse, so we phoned the council and got the same outcome as you.

Lots of tradesmen in our area are swapping their vans for estate cars to get around the new rules.

I'm betting that Brussels has something to do with this. Obviously given up on trying to get cucumbers to be straight ... :rules:

I thought it was bananas? :D

Actually my local tip are pretty good, I've taken my fully laden navara in a few times and never had a problem, although they do like to sell stuff that looks any good ;) :)

I've bought some good stuff from the skip place. In fact i've done deals with this same bloke on more than one occassion.

Years ago if you left school without qualifications and couldn't get a decent job there was always working for the council as an option, usually a manual labour job such as street cleaning. I guess these people have ended up working at our waste management centre's? ;)

Compound that with promotion for no other reason than length of service and you start to understand why we are where we are! ;)

Common sense costs nothing, which is why it's often lacking in councils...

I wouldn't agree with you Hepburn. These waste centres are out scourced and i think my experiances are down to red tape. Like i said origonally, i would have accepted it if they refused me on grounds of what i wanted to get rid of. But the fact that they took the stuff after i'd put it in my car is mind-boggling.

I have looked at the council web site which confirms the car boot rule. The fact that my estate will carry more than the trailer I took the stuff in demonstrates thier inflexiblity and lack of common sense interpretation of rules.

On the point of council jobs being no brianers well i'd take a bin mans job if i could get one. Early start/finish, out in the open, good pay. Better than working a production line in a car factory like i'm doing now.

Easy solution, load your boot, leave boot latch "unlatched", drive off at pace.

Worked last time I was told to go to the other dump 14 miles away due to me having a "commerical van". It was a hired van for garden waste.

Do I feel bad?

Nope.

Gary.

Bloody irritating isnt it! We have a van we use for delivering car spares, mainly large body panels to our bodywork guy, but can we use it if we want to dump legitimate household stuff at the tip - NO!! Instead we have to dirty a perfectly good clean car. :bang:

Ladylens...my point exactly. That is one of the reasons i have a trailer. I have taken grass cuttings to the same tip in my trailer (when i cut my back lawn i get about 6 bin bags full and it stinks if I don't take it the same day). Small trailer smaller volume than my boot.

Jobsworth...idiots.

These clowns can't see that it's senseless rules like this that encourages people to just dump all their crap in the nearest layby :bang:

Does anybody need a sticker on their car saying which council they pay their council tax to, that makes them eligible to dump their crap at said councils waste site ?
Cos we do.
This rubbish in the car thing, really is a complete stinker, there is no way I'm filling my spanking new boot with dribbly crap from the garage/garden.
It'll have to go in the soddin bin, spread over 3 months....:shake:

Our local dump records your number plate and shows it on a LED sign as you enter, I suspect they're keeping track of how often people visit so they can decide who's going too often.

We have have to clean our recycled rubbish before putting it out - I kid you not!

We have to take a recent utility bill so they can see you`re a local resident.

Well my personal vehicle is a van, company car driver you see, and to gain access to the tip I have to itemise what I am taking, black bin bags is not good enough, I have to tell them what is in 'em.
Last time I went I also took a hammer as I knew that as soon as the stigs saw the old surround sound system in the van they would be putting it on one side for sale. It was detailed on my 'licence' and sure enough they did take an interest, leave that over there they say - You see I was ahead of them and smashed it to bits with the hammer and left it where they asked :)

anyone use freecycle? A good way of recycling your unwanted stuff and getting hold of stufftoo!

Yeah a mate of mine does and swears by it, trouble is no-one wants garden cuttings and general household waste, I have an old futon base here that will go on freecycle, easier than appling for a licence / permit for the tip and better for the environment :)

our local tip is pretty good, friendly bunch and never got annoyed dispite absolutely jam packing the car and making more than one trip in a day, i do tend to politely ask prior to taking big things down i.e the bathroom suite i recently got rid of, asked if it was ok to bring it down as a whole or should i cut it up to make it easier for them, just got told to bring it down and stop worrying! :) i think the local council runs a policy that if you have a van you can get a permit from the council to get rid of residential waste, they dont seem bothered by trailers though and let them in

i have had problems with preston tip though, turned up in a hire van with a fridge freezer and they got arsey, ended up showing them the van hire form and explaining that a fridge freezer wouldnt fit SAFELY in a car hence why we hired a van!

to an extent you can understand why they want to stop trade use of councilk facilities but a bit of common sense needs to be used, i.e telling you to come back with the stuff in a boot does nothing as its not stopping the waste its just causing 2 trips to the tip, however telling someone he cant dump his stuff when he arrives in a paint stained van with a load of old paint tins in the back is fair enough, as hes clealy trade, someone with a freezer in the back of a hire van, probably kosher members of the public......

i dont understand the pallet thing though..... arent pallets worth money and the council could sell them back to a pallet company for whatever they;re worth?

Only the blue ones, and its my understanding that the value has dropped significantly to try and stop people nicking them!!!!!!

Its like the big nylon bags that u used to get sand or gravel delivered in, Jewsons and TP ect would buy them back for about £20 a throw, until too many were bein nicked from building sites!

i just use the work van and dump in the skips at work, last time i drove past the skip the queue was bout an hour long!

It's more for health and safety reasons... the straps on the bags deterioriate after use, and the fact that you used to have to undo them from the bottom to release the aggregate, which obviously has it's own risks. So they're now non returnable. Far easier, plus you can use them for garden waste and stuff :)

And the councils then spend ££££'s having surveys done to try and find out why fly tipping has gone up :bonk::bang:

And the pennies still not dropped.:shake::thinking:
Rant- sorry.
Sometimes wound if some of the people working for local authorities live in the real world?

Our council charge for waste in vans or trailers without a permit, which they supply foc, then you can dump what ever you want foc.

The bin men won't take cardboard for recycling only as general waste - landfill- but will at the tip for recycling, and you see the bin lorries in there dumping into the compactors.

How many here have to go behind the bin/recycling men to a find your bin and b clean up the mess they leave the street in, so is it any wonder some kids don't give two hoots about littering.Calls to the council fall on deaf ears I'm afraid.

Most of the measures were introduced to stop fly tipping but as always they back fire. The countries run by a bunch of incompetent clowns whether elected or employed makes no difference.:bat:

Rant over, I feal a bit bettyer now.
