Jessops Extended Warranty

Just thought I'd post a small rant and maybe warn others about what to expect.

A couple of years back I bought a Sony A55 and at the time took out extended warranty on it from Jessops. Seemed like a good idea at the time. And all was well until a few months ago when I dropped it and damaged the in-built stablisation and GPS. Luckily I have been using it until I managed to buy my D700 since I was planning to go FF anyway.

So I send it off to get fixed and it's been with them now for over 6 weeks. Rang them up to chase and it will be another 3-4 weeks due to parts issues.

Now I'm doing more pro work, I certainly cannot afford to be without a camera (even backup) for nearly 10 weeks. But even as a hobbyist, that's a pain in the backside.

I'd be doing some complaining.. 10 weeks is unacceptable, and they do state they can replace if they can't repair (and I'd argue for that, since a replacement would likely be the A57)..

When I got my A77, they wouldn't budge much on price, but they threw in a warranty and filters/bag etc.. I keep meaning to take them up on the 'warranty refund' policy if you change your mind whilst the camera is still under manufacturers warranty as I don't trust extended warranties.

On the other side, if I accidentally dropped it in water after a couple of years, even waiting 10 weeks might be tolerable considering the repair cost..

I guess they've been lucky in so far as I don't really need the camera anymore so it's not been at the forefront of my mind.

They've promised me parts will be arriving by the 19th. If that date comes & passes then I'll certainly be complaining.

Obviously with hindsight it has been a good thing that I had it. But just wanted really to make sure others were aware of how long it can take them to repair it. something worth thinking about when the salesman inevitably pushes you to buying their extended warranty.

i've no experience with Jessops, but as a more general point I've never found extended warranties to be worth buying.

It took me a fair few weeks to get my camera back from Jessops, and they ended up sending it back to the wrong store. This wasn't a warrany just a case of I needed someone to fix it well after warrany had expired.

In addition, the focus was never the same again. Always sounded like it had sand stuck in there. I wouldn't use Jessops again for repair work. I'm pretty sure they just send everything back to the manufacturers anyway.

Have a read of the warranty - often there is a clause stating if they cannot repair within X time then they will replace. They will not offer this option to you, it must be requested if it is present.
