weekly Jason's 52 in 2014 - SUPPORT Added - We've made it to the end together :-)

Excellent Jason, this really appeals  very well though out,
bow_down_before_you-960.gif
at your pp skills (y) I would love to be able to create images like this, it would look superb hung on the wall :)

Thanks for the kind comments Phil.

Wow Jason, that's a powerful image there, really rather poignant and a good reminder to us all.

Quite a lot of work gone into this one again, Loving the lens flare and teh numbers being blown away on the breeze..

As a really minor point, I'm not sure the minute hand over her eye works... do you still have the psd file with layers intact? If so, shouldn;t be too hard to rotate it back about 3 minutes. My biggest failing is I tend to flatten the image and delete the psd file when I think I'm happy with something.. once you've done that, a simple tweak becomes either impossible, or ridiculously complicated it's not worth doing.

Hi Graham. I agree about the hand over the eye...I still have all the layers so may have a play when time permits....Thanks for the indepth comments as always

Nicw take on the theme and great pp work

Thanks Colin

Good work Jason. Good base photos and super PP. I like th connection to the sea and sky. Nice bright images. Agree with Graham re the minute hand and whilst I really like the lens flare that small bright pentagon bottom right is a bit distracting from what is a lovely image

Thank Alan. I see what you mean about the botttom Pentagon and I agree it is distracting....If I rework this, I will certainly tone it down. Thanks for the comments (y)

Hi Jason....I had a similar idea of the flying time in my mind but I hadn't the faintest idea how to create it. I really like the way you have added the photo to the clock....it gives it a much greater depth, I also like the use of the sky and the sea....they will still be here when we are all long gone!!
Well done on the excellent skill you have used to create this...a special one to keep too :)
Fabulous take on the theme superb pp work excellent stuff.

Thanks Susie and Mandy for the comments. Much appreciated you gals taking the time to look :)

Another cracker. Well processed and had all the elements of a good photograph.

Cheers.
Excellent PP work and very poignant
Really love this excellent processing, the hand over the eye has been mentioned otherwise job done (y)
HI Jason
another great image your pp work is superb

Thanks gents for the visit and comments..(y)

Positive - I really like the lighting. although not fussed on the subject it fits the theme well :)

Time its a good idea well executed, but personally the thing overall for me is a bit too "rendered".

Thanks Chris...I do agree on the time image being a bit garish.....but hey ho.....sometimes bold can be beautiful ;)

Hi Jason, another great image which shows off your pp skills! The only crit I can find (though others have mentioned it)is the hand over the eye!:)
WOW!!! brilliant pp work, I would hang that on my wall any day (y)(y)

Thanks Sarah and Judi for the kind words...appreciate them always

Hi JAson

now that is a seriously super piece of work , definitely one to be printed & framed  As for crit....to me the sky seems a little overcooked but thats a personal thing...& that's it ...otherwise super pp , a very emotional image for you ,well thought out & executed

I'm just starting to get to grips with PP & have no idea how you created the bits coming of the clock.....could you share how you created this please ? cheers

Hi Lynn.

I tried to create some variation amongst the pieces to keep it looking as natural  as possible. I did this using four basic styles.

style 1) Clone a section of the clock and paste onto a new layer. Mask this cloned layer and paint away the excess to leave just the little flying bit in whaterver shape takes your fancy. Flatten the layer and duplicate it a few times varying the flying bit on each layer by using warp transform tool. Use the move tool to position the flying bit layers. Clone different parts of the clock and vary opacities to create extra variation. I did also paint in some shadows and highlights along the edges of some of the flying pieces to make them look more 3D if that possible?

Style 2) Paint black onto a new layer and repeat the 'shaping' method above to create solid black flying pieces. change opacity to tone these down. Again duplicate this layer mulitiple times transforming each to create slighting different versions of style 2

Style 3 ) Paint black on a new layer using chalk brush at differnt sizes. Vary opacity to suit

Style 4 ) Paint white on a new layer using chalk brush at different sizes. Vary opacity to suit

I think I had roughly 50 layers of flying bits....I am also new to PS so the above process if probably not the best of most efficient option ???? :)

I used Eye Candy 7 plugin to create the flying bit reflections in the water

Hope this makes sense / is helpful

Hi Jason :)

LOVE that image, for the theme that is bang on

Not being cheeky, but I'd be interested to know how many of the elements you photographed, I'm presuming the Lovely family image and the Landscape ?? and of course how you created it :)

Hi DK. Its not cheeky, its a valid question. The only element I've photographed is the picture of my Son and Great Gran on the clockface, all be it this was some time ago. The rest of the images (clock, seascape, clockwheels) are from free image stock libraries. Ideally I would photograph all elements if I had the time. Rightly or wrongly I am approaching this 52 challange as more of a Photoshop compositing challange. I am in the process of building up my own stock library but this will take time and is not that well suited to supplementing themed pieces that you might not choose to ordinarily create.

If you want to know how any specific elements were approached then let me know and I will try to elaborate as I have done for Lynn above.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the comments too (y)

Week 11: Swirl

Well I've copped out and taken a product shot which features a swirl on the packaging...lol.

Not taken in a light tent so stuggles with reflections. There was the kitchen window to the left which in hindsight has left an unsighly reflection.

I dont think this works either as hot chocolate should make you feel warm and comfy so perhaps more natural darker tones (background would work better?) Could also use some props, thinking cocoa beans and a cuppa standing next to it.....

So for now, I will just post it up and await next week. Thanks for looking folks

I think you provided some ideas in your own crit that I think would be good. As for this one it has been well exposed and certainly looks sharp. The reflection helps ground the subject rather than leave it floating,

Hi Jason,

I did say that I was only commenting on recent images as I'm on catch-up but I saw your Positive image on Flickr...

Positive: First off, congratulations mate. This caught my eye when I was browsing one of the Strobist pools (I think), I like how clean and crisp it is with good DoF I also like the centralised composition. For me, this was the best submission for Positive and just looks like one of "those flickr images" (y) Good work.

Swirl: Good idea, like Peter said you pretty much answered your own crit with props and a dark BG... maybe purple with spot of snooted light on the back?

Agree with you there Jason, there's nothing "wrong" with the shot as is... just seems to only have 2 out of the three requirements that make for a super shot...

Don't ask me what the third is, but you have the subject, and the technical execution, just needs that last push.. (Which is always the hardest bit for me to find too!).

Week 11: Swirl

So for now, I will just post it up and await next week.

Jason, your quote above just about sums this week up for me too...........at least you didn't photograph a shell
shakinghead.gif
:D

It's on theme and you have a nice white BH, which I like.the container looks a tad dark on my Ipad

It'll be tomorrow soon :)

Cheers.

Hi Jason....a simple shot after the one last week, as Graham says nothing wrong with it....but maybe it lacks a bit of ooomph....maybe a coloured background instead of the pure white. But it fits the theme, and it will be good to see what next week brings.

Hi ya

Swirl is on theme , I quite like the bright bg & reflection to ground the image..... (y) but the jar does seem a little dark to me as well.....lift it just a smidge & the 2 little light spots shouldbe easy enough to clone out...then you'de have a fab product shot (y)

Thank all for the comments on my Swirl image....All good food for thought....I think I will redo this one on a reshoot week for sure. Thanks for all the crit...always appreciated.

Jason (y)

Week 12: Linked

I have kept it simple this week and gone back to my childhood to craft some paper people chains.

As Graham (Overbez) always does, I have linked below to a SOOC image as I think this is really useful and insightful idea. After taking the image I corrected WB using white levels dropper, darkend the blue using levels midtone slider and then added gradient to the top and bottom using Nik Software's colorefex. Thanks for looking (y)

As Mandy mentioned a simple but effective approach to the theme. I like the blue tones, and also the grad - Nik Colour Efex is awesome huh!

Crit, could have got in a bit closer so that the edges of the hands meet the edge of the frame. I'd also be tempted to take out the middle line where BG meets glass...

Nonetheless I like the image and nice to see the SOOC version and the work that goes into it. Well done mate (y)

Swirl - Nice simple shot, nice white BG and good shadow just the jar it self looks a little dark.

Linked - Again a nice simple idea, agree with the possible crop and the line between looks a little harsh. Nice grads on the colour and good to see the SOOC image.

Hi Simon....well they say great minds think alike o_O I didn't see your dancing ladies until I had uploaded my dancing men. Anyway it's a super pic, I don't mind the line...they look like silhouettes reflected into clear water....smashing colour too ...and of course bang on for the theme :)

Woah - the posted shot is leaps and bounds better than the SOOC version.

Appreciate you've not done 'much' to it, but the colour boost, the crop, the gradient really bring a simple idea to life.

I've had the SOOC image bite me a couple of times regards critique and opinions... :), but feel it does bring more than it takes away, and is useful for me to compare back to. As well as providing a bit of a nudge to get close as possible in-camera.

Time - that's a superb concept, well pp'd.

Swirl - all been said really.

Linked - lovely colours and reflection. Good work.

Nice idea for this. The colour and reflections suit the image well. I'm wondering whether having five people would have been better - they always say odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye - but that would be nit picking.

Looks. I like this one, the blues really work and the detail is great. Just the horizon I'm not too keen on, it looks a bit abrupt.

Cheers.

HI Jason

my apologies....I didn't spot the tutorial info you posted for time shot.....that's really informative & something I'm going to try at some point....duly copied & pasted to a word doc for future reference...many thanks :ty:

Linked.....love how you reached the final image from the sooc verison......again , very imformative about the HOW which is mush appreciated I like it....a simple idea that with some neat pp has been lifted to a rather impressive shot (y)

Hi, Linked I feel could do with a crop off the edges so the people don't look as though they end where they do, if that makes any sense what so ever

I have really been struggling with comments on everybodys streams. Works picks up at this time of year, and so does the demand to keep family entertained outdoors. My apologies but thank you all for your comments

Linked - simple idea but effective, clean and clear composition a good take and fits the theme.

Cheers Mandy !

Oh yeah, colour Efex is awesome....would highly recommend to anybody. Thanks for the comments Si (y)

From the SOOC image Jason that is excellent, I like the grad and even the centre line, as Simon Says I wonder what a crop to the sides would look like - even as is, all in all, love it (y)

Thanks DK. I found that a crop to the sides left no room on the top and bottom, but agree in principle that it would look better. Thanks for looking :)

Swirl... You have said most things yourself, it is a nice clean image:)

Linked...Nice simple idea well executed takes me back a bit too (y)

Thanks Judi....must admit it was fun

I agree Graham.....it helps others to understand the PP process used, if they like PP work that is.

Time - that's a superb concept, well pp'd.

Good idea that....did'nt cross my mind but now you mention it....

Swirl - got to agree with your own comments on this.
Linked -good idea and you have handled it particularly well. Good idea for the reflections and the colour grad. Real impact(y)

I like this, it's really fun and works well with the theme. Nice clean image.
Hi Jason - another simple idea that has worked really well the colours are good the back-round works not to sure on the line find that a tad distracting but from your SOOC you have done some excellent work

Thanks guys for the comments and views....always appreciate....sorry if I have not got round to your pages yet.....hope to soon (y)

Make sense Allan:) Thanks for stopping by (y)

Week 13: STEP

I've not had much time, so gone for a literal interpretation. This effort was more about putting text into an image, something I have not done before. Admittedly, I did not put much effort into this but hope nontheless that the Text colour & style 'go together' with the image, if that makes sense?

Hi, interesting take on the theme, is it your pic? works well enough though

Hi Jason.. No one said this was meant to be easy. ;) text color, font, size, placement all work fine with the image, not liking the dark smudgy line just beyond the face.

And to be picky, I'd prefer "if you get as far as I have."

Look forward to next (this) weeks submission.

No Allan, not my pic, searched photo library for a pic that best portrayed the written text message. Some will call it cheating :) but for me, this week was about playing with text in PS, something I've not done before.

THanks for taking a look Graham....all very well considered points which I agree with. Always appreciate your insightful comments. Thanks.

Week 14 Nature is ready to upload now. Kept it simple with a pic of an orchid - will include the SOOC version too. (y)

Week 14: Nature

A picture of an Orchid.....nothing to exiciting for this one, but one of my fav floweres.....my avatar pic is based on this very same orchid which flowers faithfully year on year.

Wanted to get this one in the bag and take the week off :) . I've included a link to the SOOC image below

Hi, Step, quite a emotional submission. It doesn't seem right to crit...not that there are any main issues :)

Nature, oh, yeah, like this one. Great detail and the colour cast works really well

Cheers.

Very nice job Jason. Nowt to dislike about the posted version. You've done a really great job dragging that out of the in camera shot.

Getting the feeling a bit more light or slightly more 'exposure' would have made less work for you from the sooc shot but makes the pp work more impressive.

Super detail in the veins of the petals too.

Nice one.... Feet up for the week now. :)

Step - Not your image = no crit ! Sorry

Nature - This on the other hand is absolutely superb. Lovely and sharp and a nice complimentary background colour. Nice one.
