So, everyone's got Ken Rockwell's number by now, right? He posts silly things and makes silly assumptions to drive traffic to his website, thus increasing profit from click throughs he places there.

Now that's out the way, I made this point to Jared Polin on that video there (my comment is at the top there) - only he didn't seem to get it. Am I the only one here that does? Surely not!

Edit *sigh* that no longer seems to work and the forum sofware just defaults to stripping out the bare link and putting it in media tags to save the drivel go to 37 miniutes

If you know enough to mentally sort the drivel and BS from the good stuff, you don't really need KR's advice and (very) occasional pearls.
 
Jared was more entertaining when he interviewed people and sung less, but thats the youtube phenomena for you. It works for him and he makes a living out of it...

I'd go with that. On the whole swearing doesn't bother me but what was the point of all the expletives in the video.

While not disagreeing with that his site can be usefull if you are looking for some information about particular Nikon lenses say ...just the factual stuff filter size lens hood number etc
 
Also, really? Program mode for Pro's? Ken Rockwell advocates that we all should use full Auto. Because we can't do any better than what the camera decides for us. If that's the case, why are we here?

I sent Ken Rockwell an email years ago, when I was considering my first DSLR (Nikon D70), because I was concerned about the tiny/dim viewfinder compared with my F2 and FM and wanted his opinion. I didn't really expect a personal reply, but got a long, chatty, response a few days later - with an apology for the delay - explaining that he'd had to make some adjustments too, but was confident I'd get used to it and enjoy the camera. He also invited me to mail him with any other questions I had, and offered to help if he could. I've always found him knowledgeable, irritating, provocative and entertaining, and I still remember his courtesy to me.

In the event, I didn't buy the D70 and waited a few years before I got a DSLR. I eventually got a 30D and used the advice on his website about setting it up, because I'd only used manual cameras and had no experience with AF, AE or any of the other myriad of options it offered. His recommendations worked well, although I made my own adjustments once I had a bit of experience with it.
 
Not sure who's worse... Rockwell, or this total prick.
 
I watched about a minute and a half of it before that smug irritating nob annoyed me to the point where I could continue no further. Rockwell's an attention seeker but at least he seems to be a genuinely helpful guy with good intentions rather than being a self-obsessed overly opinionated fool.
 
I think mr rockwell feels that A is "almost proffesional" mode

If you're going to be in an automatic mode, it may just as well be P as A(v) or S (Tv). A quick flick of the control wheel gets the desired aperture or shutter speed whichever mode you've chosen.
 
No Nod, in AV you're just one away from Manual, or 3 from Custom1

Rockwell is in text (or I've missed the videos!) So way less annoying let's face it nearly all the YouTube reviewers are irritating attention seeking bores.

Ken Rockwell has become my hero after seeing how much he winds up this guy.

PS I find the constant 'in awe' grin of his co-host very punch-worthy. merry xmas all.
 
Once you get passed Jared Polin's style..he is very informative and to a level that is easy to understand..and he IS a photographer!

Jared Polin asked where everyone would like to see him do a show. I suggested Palestine, but he has never replied. Very rude.

Did anyone see the video he made with Zack Arias? It felt to me that Zack was the only photographer present.

I couldn't bring myself to press play in case he done one of his "sniff tests" on a newly opened box.

Like someone else said, he used to be mildly amusing AND helpful. Now he's pretty much a parody of himself.

I couldn't bring myself to watch it again ... it just looks very beginner in the way they seem to be practicing, and Polin is just a prat.

I am NOT recommending this crappy video, you have been warned. If you do watch it, don't blame me!

Whilst I'll agree with you about Polin, he is indeed a prat here - Zack is actually a rather good photographer and some of his one flash shots are brilliant. I've learned quite a lot from him, maybe unlike Jared.

Not sure you can call him an idiot based on his hair. As you seem to be implying. That reflects badly on you.

However based on the general content of his videos, you could justifiably base it on that.
 
They're both nobs, one of them has nice T shirts for sale. :D

Nope. I am pretty intolerant of that kind of behaviour. It's akin to me saying all people over 50 are bigots.

Judge him on his work, his content but not his appearance.

No, he has silly hair so he is a very silly person. It's a fact: Ask Freud. It is true, he is an idiot without the silly hair, but it is also true, IMHO, that the hair makes him look stupid. So therefore, even if he was not stupid, which we know he is, his hair makes him look stupid.

I wonder how much of our lives we could waste judging not IF he is stupid, but HOW stupid he is, instead of talking about a good photographer - that being, someone else (who may have stupid hair, and still be amazing, lolol).

You are so right, I was just saying to Sir SR how amazing his hair looks. I wonder who his stylist is? Why don't you email him and find out?
