Ive never really liked Jeremy Clarkson ...

I actually don't really disagree with Clarkson's views on their attitudes myself.

It's largely due to the materialistic attitude that tends to come with a love of cars. I find excessive materialism extraordinarily unattractive, and I see fancy cars as very materialistic items. Most of my friends who are really into cars love the status that comes with them, and I just hate that.

Of course I've seen Top Gear before and I'm aware of the safety precautions they take. But it doesn't change the fact that there's a strong focus on driving like a prat, regardless. Essentially, it sends out a message that acting like a speed-obsessed alpha male is cool.

Personally, I just can't stand it.

You do know that you can be a petrol head without owning a flash car or any car at all for that matter.
I am a classic case of that and I'm no alpha male.

You also failed to answer my response to an earlier comment you made about car lovers.

The 'Stewart Lee on Top Gear' video on YouTube sums Clarkson up pretty well, plus he has the added advantage of being actually funny, unlike Clarkson.

Yes, because some assumptions are safe to make.

But, you know, your pointless snarky attitude is really adding a lot to the thread, so keep it up.

I asked you a question, which you answered, which I then thanked you for answering. In return I get insulted. How does that work?

Actually, on second thoughts, don't answer that. I might be insulted again.

I'm out.

Yours isn't doing much for it either, please keep it up.

i read your response as sarcastic the same as onona, if it wasnt meant that way, then an simple explanation might help

Actually, can everyone please stop bickering. Looks like there are sense of humour failures all over the place at the moment. :(

he started it ;)

Stuart Lee is about as funny as prostate cancer.*

*Sits back and waits patiently to be accused of having said prostate cancer is funny.

The Sunday Times is reporting that Clarkson's comments where rehearsed and cleared by the BBC producers in advance of the programme airing. It's certainly not the first time that interviews on The One Show have caused controversy.

If anyone is still interested in the facts that is.

Or there are a handful of members that just thrive off being antagonistic?

I hate Stewart Lee, he just isn't funny. I would go as far as comparing him to kittens with ebola. Although actually...

What amazes me is that there were 21000 complaints, are they seriously trying to tell us that 21000 people watch The One Show?

Or is it like the Ross/Brand thing where TWO people complained at the time and then 30000 jumped on the bandwagon?

Well, The Telegraph today reports that "22,000 people had voted on the Telegraph website saying Clarkson had not gone too far with his comments". I really couldn't care less. Storm in a teacup.

I'm in Oz at the moment, and I saw this on their main tv news yesterday - the fact that Jezza reckons all those going on strike ought to be shot...

...but they didn't put the quote in context either.

So who's being more sensationalist? Clarkson or the media that are reporting the story? Pot, kettle, black?

If you didn't see the program when it went out then you have no right to be offended. Getting offended later is not an option. I think there were only a few hundred complaints on the day it went out.

Mary Whitehouse was a prize hypocrite. She was always on about family values and yet she and her son weren't even on speaking terms. I don't think the son was even mentioned in the biopic that was on about her either.

How many people complained about Jerry Spring The Opera being aired, without even having watched?

OFCOM:

Pre Airing: 7,940
Post: 8,860

BBC:
Pre Airing: 55,000
Post: 8,000

The majority of people who complain are offended by someone else's offence and jump on the bandwagon.

I really wish that those who want to jump on the 'Outrage Bus' would view the source material first before chucking their teddy out of the pram.

Totally agree. Anyone who has complained without having viewed the full item in its original context should be taken out and shot :)

Stewart Lee. The only person less funny than Gervais.

Stewart Lee. The only person less funny than Gervais.

Gervais can write some very clever and funny stuff, but he himself isn't that funny

Ghost Town - great film
Invention of Lying - great film
Cemetery Junction (written by Gervais and merchant) - great film
Extras - funny, but it is the actors who are funny in it (written by Gervais)
Idiot Abroad - Karl is genius
The Office - total carp
The dwarf program he has written at the moment - total carp.

Stewart Lee? Any redeeming features?

Ben Elton and Alexei Sayle's early stage work could qualify for that title as well!

You evidently haven't the faintest idea who Professor Brian Cox is.

You are so Wrong!

Puerile. Are you trying to use a feeble ad hominem remark to undermine my opinion? How desperate and pathetic.

It is a joke, but obviously you cannot see that...because for one it is probably too clever for you.

Onona, why don't you have a trip to the official TP joke thread if you want to see some real 'un PC ness' and people bashing....do not complain though because it is a joke thread and nothing else.

Just a tip. When making a joke put a smiley on the end, it helps people understand you are making a joke and not getting something wrong:thumbs:

Don't worry, he's just making jokes like on Top Gear.

I don't really find that funny either! So we have now established that Stewart Lee is a funnny as kittens with ebola and that he is also as funny as Topgear...

Ps. I have followed Stewart Lee for some time, from the Fist of Fun (with the equally as unfunny Richard Herring) and he has never floated my boat. He plays the uncomfortable silences poorly and quite frankly his jokes are not all that great. I understand he is sometimes called the comedian's comedian but perhaps they do this to make themselves feel better! ;)

I watched all of Stuart Lee's tv series. He's ok. He's not that funny. When it was Lee & Herring they were a lot better. Rob Newman has fared better and is genuinely interesting. The delivery style of Stuart Lee isn't as engaging really.

Alexei has done some great stuff. His novels are pretty good too.

Some Gervais stuff is funny. It's the dead pan nature of it. If you like things like 'Best in Show' then it is good. If you don't get it then it just seems far too much like a documentary that would be on some dodgy living channel.

Some of the best comedy I've seen lately has been from those mad French women on 'Women!'.

Nope, I've tried to sit through his routine on more than one occasion, searching in vain for a hint of wit, without any success whatsoever.

Stewart Lee ... beautifully crafted material ... terribly clever ... ... absolutely totally wholly unfunny every single time!!

Meanwhile back on topic someone on the Guardian [where even a poll of Guardianistas has 53% supporting Clarkson] has written

There's naux outrage
Like faux outage
Like naux outrage
We knaux! :D

No I won't be doing that, if I have to put a smilie on the end it is like explaining the gag. :geek:

Not really. When reading your comment it isn't clear it is a joke, putting the smiley on says it's a joke but then leaves it up to the reader to try and interpret it, otherwise it just seems like you making an error.

Did you actually read what I wrote what she was saying was puerile?

You normally can tell if something is a joke by the tone in the voice or the facial expression.

For some reason you can't have a tone of typing on the internet

Watch his 41st Best Stand Up, even watch his take on Top Gear that lasts for 15 minutes. I know Clarkson has the comedic ability to compare the front of a car to some type of fish and hate the French and Germans or caravans, but Stewart Lee is well worth a watch too.

i did, i'm just saying it helps communication on a forum that's all, and helps negate prickly replies.

it's your choice

So when I write....... 'did you hear the one about........' does that not express that it is a joke?
