So last night I saw an iTunes update on screen- installed but it failed to complete.this morning tried to open iTunes an it won't open because a file is missing! It says re-install so I tried this but it will not install properly!!

Help!! Steve

Download iTunes direct for Apple (https://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/) and do a standard installation. There is no need to un-install iTunes before hand. This will work for both Windows or OSX.

When it is re-installed it should pick-up the old preferences but may need pointing to the media folder if you store you media away from the default folder.

Thanks for the reply. My wife tried that and it said "can't connect mobile device" even tho nothing is plugged in!ill have a go at it when I get home and report back .thanks

Steve

A very strange error message. I would need to know when that message appeared, if it was part of the installation so therefore an iTunes installation error or an error message to so with your operating system.

If you can I would download iTunes at work and take it home on a usb pen/CD, if you do this make sure you download the correct version (eg if you use Windows at work and Mac at home download the Mac version and vis versa). Another possible issue if you have Windows at home could be related to the version of Windows, if you have a 32bit Operating System you won't be allowed to install a 64bit version of the program. The web browser should have made use the version of iTunes was correct but sometimes it can be wrong - in this case I would use the default browser for the OS (IE for WIndows or Safari for OSX).

Good luck!

BTW, if you have to un-install iTunes and then re-install make sure you take a backup of the preferences. The preferences can be found here:

Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

Seems a common problem, I had trouble last week and my mate had same problem as the OP last night.

iTunes keeps wanting to update on my desktop but I won't let it. From what it says, I don't need the upgrade and from what I've heard, it might cause problems. IIAFDFI!

Well I got home and my son has sorted it for us! He's gone out so I can't ask him how he did it- all I know is it took him 2 1/2 hours!!
Thanks for the great advice as usual-I will report back when I see him!

The problem I had was the update failed near the end, luckily it did not stop iTunes opening.

However, likewise problem with mate and it won't open, stating missing .dills etc.

So not sure how a reboot will help?

Was aimed at the OP. iTunes normally asks for a reboot post update. It's a long shot if it didn't complete but worth it for a potential quicky.

Plus if it wouldn't reinstall the original update might have been locking files etc blah

[quoteil_g, post: 6082768, member: 14523"]theres got to be a common factor. all of mine have been fine..[/quote]

Yes probably right there must be in our case the computer was a dell with windows vista

My mate's was Vista too. I didn't have quite as much bother on Win7 although it failed to update.

Sounds exactly like the problem my daughter has.

Since I updated itunes I have an error message that a programme has tried to load C++ incorrectly and iTunes will not start. It says something about "R6034. An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly."

I have uninstalled it, rebooted, and re-installed twice but iTunes will still not work.

As well as this, I get the same error message every time I start up the laptop (Win 7).

So presently I am unable to load iTunes, and don't know what is not loading at bootup.

Any help would be appreciated, but uninstall and re-install is not the answer, for me anyway!

EDIT - I have started a new thread as the op's problem has been sorted.

Yeah! Same here. I don't see the point in upgrading iTunes just for a little fix. It's understandable to upgrade from iTunes 9 to 10, then upgrade 10 to 11, but what's the point of upgrading from say iTunes 11.1.0.1 to 11.1.0.2 (purely made up example) just for what seems to be a fix for a tiny bug on thousand of computer, and mine is not one of that thousand, mine is working fine. I don't see the point in downloading a minor upgrade, then end up with installation problems, or your verision of iTunes works fine, other people's same verision works wonky, and the next minor upgrade ccomes out and helpsis to fix their problem, only when you do upgrade, your verison gets wonky (along with thousands of different people who now reports theirs is wonky), while the ones with wonky iTunes get fixed!!

It's like apps from Apple's store, a lot of people reports problems with their apps, but mine seems to be working fine, so out comes the new updated version, they download and install it, it works well, I download and install only to find it won't work on mine!!

If my iTunes 11 is working fine on my machine, then i'm just following the well known phase "If it aren't broken, don't fix it." so I don't bother downloading a minor upgraded version, and if I don't download it, then I don't worry about ending up with installation problems. I would rather install iTunes 11 then leave it for a couple of years until iTunes 12 than spend an hour every month or so installing and possiblity trying to sort out troublesome installation, of every little minor version like 11.1, 11.1.1, 11.1.2, etc., etc.,

good thing you get the box that says "New iTunes 11.blah.blah.blah is out now, would you like to download and install?" and I'm thinking If i download this, what are the chances of this next version giving me a wonky installation that needs me to waste an hour or two trying to fix it myself? so I rather not take the chances and click 'No'

I agree with Nod, i don't need the upgrade, so if I don't need the upgrade, then I don't have to worry about an installation that go south.
