Stone - for both of them I'd like to see a panorama type crop as there is a lot of foreground not saying much IMHO but then I'm a fan of panoramas.

Thanks Jill, I suppose the foregrounds are about stones but point taken, the little bridge might so well in panorama style

Thanks Allan, I was going for a kind of 1970's colour print look to the signs, so yes the processing is intentional. I am happy with the space around the stone/fossil but then I guess I would be, may be a bit closer but I find it feels a bit uncomfortable if the subject gets too close to the edge.

"Delightfully depressing" what an excellent phrase which sums up nicely the scene that I thought was reminiscent of the rather nasty, cheap and tacky mess the country seems to be in at the moment.
 
Hi Chris... that's a good composition. I like the fact you have plenty of things to look at, all of which build to an overall picture which tells a story. Well put together. Photograph is technically solid - I wonder if it might be stronger without that van dominating on the right, but it is what it is! The only thing I'm not a fan of is the processing to get that old film look. I don't think it needs it, but it's always good to have a play and experiment with these things so still a definite (y)

Edited to add: stone reshoot is a good take. Yes, you can see the texture in the surface in the foreground but I don't personally find it distracting. Harder lighting works well to bring out the definition. Good shot.

Thanks Paul, I left some texture and slight shadow in the stone shot on purpose, I shot this and have shot others in the past on a completely black background and they often look like the are floating and quite artificial at the edges to my eye. I would like to find a background for these that gives a sense of context and scale without dominating the subject and which still gives good separation but I haven't found one yet...

Coloured surfaces & backgrounds are also possibilities... basically anything except total black will give you a shadow. And anything that's very dark grey tends to look like it was meant to be black but was over-lit!

Thanks Paul, helpful and interesting as always. I have in mind a background of something like seaweed, corals or shells since the fossils formed under the sea, perhaps slightly OOF but recognisable enough to to give a sense of the size of the subject, but efforts so far have been a bit half-hearted and the results reflected that. I also pondered using something like a large ceramic floor tile
 
Yeah, I've swithered on this. I started off doing shoots of my kids with the "standard" backdrops which carried on to cover the floor - basically an infinity curve. It just looks set up. So now, I use a black background that's lit, or a white background that's not and the actual real floor that's in the room :) This way, I get something uncluttered but it still looks "real" and not totally set up (maybe just 50% set up :) )

The same can apply to these sorts of shots: black all round leads to floatiness as you've said. Mirror or reflective glossy surfaces look funky but have a particular "look" that ends up dominating to an extent. Contextual backgrounds can add interest but can also clutter and distract, so need to be done quite carefully IMO. Simply plain surfaces like stone tiles etc. can work well, as long as they don't compete or clash with the subject. There's no perfect answer and it's worth having a few different "surfaces" available to try. Regular textures/lines can be helpful in switching off the brain so it's not distracting - wooden chopping boards etc. are useful for that because we don't really notice the pattern, but it's not just a plain colour.
 
Some variety of signs there Chris - unnecessary visual pollution to my mind but good choice for the theme. I like Stone - hard to relate to it's passage through history .. quite amazing. I like the colours and texture of course. Very interesting debate about bg ... not sure what best really but I do have a black gloss ceramic tile which I think would be my choice for a test. :clap:

Thanks for commenting Carl, I agree about those signs being visual pollution, too many and no one reads them anyway. A black gloss tile sounds like something worth getting hold of, I'll have to look out for one.
 
Chris, signs just right in my opinion. Quite apt for the days event and result tomorrow. Like the cast effect :)

Like the fossil in the stone especially against the black background.

Hi Chris ....well, whoever put that sign up got their own way! Well spotted for the topic, I think it works really well with that different variety of signs. That's an interesting discussion about backgrounds, I always tend to go for a strong black and I think with your fossil it works really well.

Not my thing really but it was p'ing down all afternoon so I thought I'd give it a go, SOOC (apart from a little crop). Add to that flickr is broken, not the best of days...

I like the DoF with just enough of the stem and thorn discernable in the bg; beautiful rose with almost jewel-like droplets acting as highlights.
 
nice composition, subtle colour and DoF the water drops are a nice touch too
