It has begun....and now it's ended....again **TP OFFICIAL WORLD CUP THREAD**

For them its the Cup final and for us its like a warm up match. And we still didn't win!

exactly. A draw was probably about right on balance.

Based on that performance I can see you winning the group but not going that much further.

Japan being driven onto victory by ........ Honda.

:coat:

you cant base it on one performance though, and also lets not forget the group performance often has no bearing on who moves through further.

Look at Holland in the euro's 2 years ago - they owned their group, easily looked like making it to the final, then crashed out.

In the last world cup Italy and france looked weak throughout yet both got to the final.

The fact is, you don't have to be the best team to win a cup competition and we certainly arent the best team, so we've got a great chance!

Very true. We just need a little luck...... Well that's us *******sed then:D

So we have to look bad to look good? That will be easy.

Well, that's going to put all the TV pundits out of a job then  The bookies weren't that impressed either and you don't see them getting it wrong too often.

But, let's base it on recent form as well, the two friendlies didn't exactly cover England in glory either. Aye, they won them, but look especially at the Japan game where they needed two own goals to win it.

The fact is the English team isn't as good as you've been led to believe it is. You've got two (Gerrard/Rooney) genuine world class players and another two or three (J Cole/Lampard/Crouch maybe, he scores regularly for England??) you could probably include on a good day. The rest of them aren't really that special in the company they're with at the moment.

Well they all got it wrong 4 years ago when they all rulled out both France and Italy for winning and they both got to the final.

Your analysis of the world class players is exactly the same for many of the other teams. Generally a good team is made up of 4 or 5 world class players and the rest just fit into the team and make it a team. You can't win anything with a team of individuals. Take a look at man united for example when they won everything last year. Wes brown, carrick, nani, Johnny Evans, ji sung park - none of these are world class players in the same league as your Rooney, gerrard, messi etc.

Even the France team who made the final last year, how many of them would you class as the absolute elite.

let's see

Patrick VIEIRA
William GALLAS
Claude MAKELELE
Florent MALOUDA
Zinedine ZIDANE
Sylvain WILTORD
Thierry HENRY
Mikael SILVESTRE
Louis SAHA
Fabien BARTHEZ
David TREZEGUET
Franck RIBERY

I know you could argue about a couple of these but there's far more strength in depth there than in the current England team.

Barthez, saha, wiltord, silvestre, Henry (recently) are all less than world class. The thing is you don't need a team of all world class players to win a cup, look at Greece 6 years ago.

I'm not saying England are going to win the world cup, I'm saying that the squad is good enough to if they play consistently like they are capable of doing. A good team is better than squad of it's players, just look at man city, you can't just pepper a team with individuals

Well, with the exception of germany I am yet to see a standout performance so far this world cup. Argentina looked good going forward but weak at the back, the dutch only played average. Ivory coast and Portugal were poor, italy and france have been poor, england were like the dutch, ok but didn't win.

Lets hope brazil and spain show up, this has to be the lowest goal count at this stage of any world cup in a long time

Ivory Coast and Portugal game was a boring game, loads of dives/overreactions.

New Zealand get a point, bit of a surprise but good for them :)

Brazil v N Korea coming up.

My £5 is on 7-0.

There's always one............

....and it's always Fabs!

should have bet on it..............

Did Brazil turn up - or did they get 11 kids from Soweto High School to don the kit for them?

aye, not really too impressive but at the same time never really looked like they left first gear.

Was that first goal brilliance or a fluke though? :D

Score for Fridays England match?! If your answer is sensible (not a 500-0 or something stupid), I'll stick a tenner on it and show you the reciept!!

I expect 3-0. I'd go as far as to say 1-0 at half time. That's to England by the way

These North Koreans can play be jezus....... did someone mention 7-0 to Brazil!!!!.... go stand int the corner :D

Nope, north Korea are no mugs. 2-0 at best I'd say, although I wouldn't be surprised if Korea got one either

I'm betting on one of Korean teams to get to at least the quarter finals maybe even the semis ,i maybe bonkers :bonk:,just have this gut feeling:shrug:

thats not bonkers, i bet you wouldn't get high odds on that. They've easily kept their own looking at the other teams performances

well, looks like France should be out, interesting :)

2-0 with 2 minutes to go.....

Stuck my bet on today....put on a treble of 1-0 England at half time, 3-0 England at full time, with Rooney the first scorer.....long odds but do-able and if it comes off, I might be going full frame!!

Plus, I might send you a prezzie!! ;)

So, looking at the table for France's group, it looks like they will have to eat South Africa convincingly and hope that Mexico beat Uruguay.

Sheesh, what with Spain losing their opener the world cup's upside down! That said, it's out side of Europe, so it's either going to be Brazil or Argentina for the cup (or maybe even Uruguay).

Good man, might have to put it on myself, I'm on a roll here, got a six game accumulator going and already successfully picked Greece and Mexico to win, all I need is England, Germany and holland to win and the USA to draw against Slovenia and I'll be quids in.

I just put a pound on at 185 to 1

France played like they shouldn't be there!

Anyone got any special plans for tonight? Or is everyone staying at home to watch the match?

I'm having a couple of days away with the kids so I'll probably be watching it in a caravan!! :D

just got the brother in law and sister coming round to watch it at home, my tv is bigger than most screens in the pub anyway

No bloody ITV in the caravan :annoyed: because the freeview signal is rubbish!!! Having to settle for 5Live, so I guess it's not a complete loss......sounds like my bet might be a bit off the mark though! :shake:

At least the England fans have risen above the Vuvuzelas !
