This is an interesting video comparing the video shot by the new iphone with that shot by the Canon 5DMK II. I'd say the iphone is pretty good.

What video?

Google it.

I'm not sure what it shows as it's pretty ropey conversions (at least the one I've seen) and shot at rediculously high F numbers so the shallow DoF that the 5D2 video is prized for isn't even tested.

If it's the one side by side, take a look at the billboards about 1 minute in. The Apple is having real trouble getting the neon captured correctly.

This is like one of those threads that compares an f/4 lens with a fast prime but then shoots at f/8 in perfect light.

I.e. pointless

Try shooting the iPhone at 1.4 with manual focus at 24 frames a second. Oh that's right it can't be done.

The fact is if you are cooking your steak well done, then it matters less what quality the steak is. That's not really anything we don't already know!

I agree. Amazing how things like phones have come on leaps and bounds. I can remember the first mobile I owned that did something like 480x320 video that was truly awful. But I thought it was the nuts at the time....

Point missed.

It's showing what a little pocket HD camera can do compared against what is (probably) the industry standard HD-recording DSLR. The 5D can do a lot more, but for some general shooting it's amazing what a phone can achieve. Those who don't see that need to open their eyes a little wider....

No, its glorifying the iPhone for the sake of it. There are many other smartphones that can shoot HD video, but nobody sees the need to compare those to a 5D. It's fan boys trying to say hey look at my iphone, its almost as good as your 5D but its made by apple so I'm much cooler than you.

Get real!

If I want to shoot video I'll use the right tool for the job, which is not an iphone, smart phone, ipad or any other multipurpose gadget.

The fact it just happens to be the newest big-brand phone on the market kind of hints that it will get a lot of coverage. When HTC/Samsung (et al) bring the next one out tomorrow or the day after, the same coverage will apply. This isn't strictly an apple fanboy thing (although the guy probably likes his 4s a lot), it's a simple video to show what technology can do.

So you shoot with the right tool for the job - no one asked you to do any different - stop being so uptight about it. I take it you use a video camera to shoot videos? Are you one of those who denies that such technology as phones and tablets won't be in a position soon to multi-task? I see you own a DSLR that does video - why not chop it in and get a D60, which'll just shoot stills?..... oh I forgot, you're recommending the 550D as a video camera because it's the right tool for the job?...

Some people just like to share stuff for the sake of sharing; not everything in this world has a sinister or ulterior motive....

No, quite right, but it does get a bit boring as if you believed everything that was shared about their products, Apple would be sitting on the worlds largest reserve of pixie dust...

Like I said, there are already other phones out there that can shoot HD and full HD video, nobody else compares them to a 5D so why do apple fan boys? iPhone users however seem to think they are special, making a big deal out of photo shoots with an iphone as if no other phone on the market could take half decent pictures when used with studio lighting and now comparing it to a full frame DLSR for video.

It's always the apple users that do this never Samsung, HTC, LG or Sony Ericsson. Other smartphone users don't feel that need to say hey look at what my phone can do compared to a DSLR! It's boring and pathetic, like a Saxo owner who tries to make his car as fast as a Ferrari.

There is nothing wrong with a multi tasking devices so long as you accept that a jack of all trades is master of none. I'm all for new technology and I bought the 550D because it can shoot HD video, but I didn't compare it to a RED one or any other dedicated video camera because that would just be silly. It's the cheapest way to get good looking shallow DoF video and a good stills camera in one. I know what it is and what it isn't, that is the difference.

Yes I'm smart, if you don't like that well tough. I think this is all I will say on the subject before it turns into a full blown argument.

don't get me wrong, the video from the little phone is great for what it is, but don't compare it to a 5d in its most generic settings, what's the point? Nobody shoots with a 5d in those settings because they may as well shoot with an iPhone as that's how simple and easy the settings for video at that level are.

If you want to show the iPhone 4s video off compare it to other phones that have video.

It's like buying a skoda and driving it at the most efficient petrol consumption against a GTI golf and saying - look, it cost the same amount in petrol and we got to Kent in the same amount of time. The comparison is pointless.

.....like a Saxo owner who tries to make his car as fast as a Ferrari.

Now this bit really tickles me

Couldn't agree more, but.......Maybe this'll be more relevant when the new iPhone 4SX Turbo VVT Bling Woodscrew Spoiler comes out with interchangeable lenses (woodscrew mount of course)

I agree, its pointless. I have spent the last hour trying to ring my mum using my 5D2 and I can't even get a dialing tone
