iPhone 4 - UPDATE: Signal Issues

LOL, a free bumper, that really is a great solution for your super sleek phone. :D

Don't regret saying goodbye to my Apple stuff now...

Too right I will be, providing either Apple or Orange are going to stick by this...

Comparing apples and oranges never works. ;)

looks like i'll be getting your pen and paper and a pie to eat, any request on the flavour?

you just bring some humbleness.

Just humble with a side of my hat. That will be all, thanks.

I have also said that I have never had any problems with mine in use, and will not take it back if I had the option, I will have a free case, but I it will probably take as long to come as the custom one I ordered, so no benefit really.

I have the 3GS and its great but I'm Soooooo glad I didnt upgrade when given the chance... How STUPID is this for a fix.. A BUMPER! Jeesus. My Dog could have thought of that one !

Yeah, but it's all that is needed to fix a non problem! I've not got one yet but i have held four different iPhone 4s, cupped tightly in both hands with no effect on the signal. Has anyone here had a problem?

Our 6 at work (including mine) have not presented any signal problems - they infact work down at the local 'lunchtime dining venue', something that none of the previous iPhones and mobiles did.

Mine's fine as well... I can get the signal to drop but it hasn't dropped a call on me.

My only niggle is that I'm restricted to the naff SMS tunes supplied with the phone... I miss my old 'Beep Beep Roadrunner' one! :(

But according to Apple, that was what was causing the signal issues, therefore it WAS a fix for the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I read the letter that Napolean... err I mean JonTucker linked us to for the Apple official take on it.

In that letter, it states that the algorithm was incorrect and that it showed 2 more bars than there was actually signal for. So when the user holds their phone in the left hand and it apparently dropped 4-5bars it was actually 2 bars less than shown. Unless I'm missing something here, surely this just admits that the signal strength is worse than indicated.

For my part, I have a 3G. Updated it to IOS4 and it slowed down something chronic but didn't crash on me at all. A particular glitch was when sliding the bar to unlock. You slid the finger across, a second later the bar would move and the code pad would pop up. Enter the code and the asterisks would pop up a second later then catch up and unlock.
Updated it to 4.0.1 the other night and, it might be the placebo effect, but it does run a whole lot smoother than before.

Oh and for the record Napo... JonTucker, I actually really like Apple gear. Can't afford it, love the looks, but still think they're fallible just like the rest of us.

Hmmm... are you trying to make up for something here... is it a "Napolean complex"... or maybe something a little more personal?

Errr, no. I was using sarcasm as a means to convey the point that despite it being all over the press and the web, you had somehow missed it.

Here you go... Click

Yeah I missed it! Me and about 50 million others that don't live and breathe all things apple flavoured. If you took the time to read the first part of my post, I apologised in advance if it had been covered previously in the 16 or so pages of this thread. I had a piece of information that I thought may be of assistance to those in the thread, albeit a bit late in the day. This I now know.

We can all look down our noses at others who don't share the same knowledge we do. I'm sure there's many things in my life that I could run rings around you about, try to score points off you with your sarcastic "no sh!t sherlock!!!" attitude. Only difference I don't think of it as a means of making myself look better than others. I'd have the grace to politely explain...

...and you know what they say about sarcasm being the lowest form?

And yes, consider the dummy firmly spat! :dummy:

Interesting. Anyone on here care to try these tests and report back?

http://www.apple.com/antenna/

Where conveniently the hand grip on each non-apple phone has been adjusted to make it fit the beardy ones claim that 'Our phones are as crap as everbody elses' :p

Might be more believable if they had used the same hold on each phone.

Yeah but what it is trying to prove is that all phones have weak points. Holding it in a certain way doesn't make a difference if it proves that if you hold any phone in a "certain" way it will happen. Surely if it is correct it proves a point?

Just wondered if anyone who had these phones could prove/disprove it?

Also is anyone else having the white balance issue when using flash on the camera. Some things on mine are fine, but some have a really yellow cast.

Apart from that still the best phone I have ever owned, no problem with signal and gets signal at work where my 3g didn't.

6 more weeks and my case will be here (I ordered a custom one from the states) just hope I can keep my phone in good nick til then

To be fair ive seen you post these holier than thou posts before, I think it's you that should lighten up. Let's keep this place friendly

For my part I apologise to the list, forum and mods. I don't normally get wound up but if anyone's going to make me look silly, I'll do it myself as I'm very good at it. :cuckoo:

And now, a light-hearted comedy moment as I do a "Not The 9 O-Clock News" thing in here.

Here's my latest cartoon, cobbled together only five minutes ago.

I've also heard that an iPhone 4-themed wedding has had to be cancelled, all due to lack of a reception.

That's all from me. Goodnight. :)

Was I lucky in taking one of the last 3 bumpers in the Newcastle Apple store the day after I bought my iPhone on launch day???

Anyway, I do want a different case and normally like the iSkin ones, but they're not available yet.

Anyone got any other recommendations??

And Ian D J - Great post!

I got mint through at the weekend. It's sorted out the issues even though it's not the best looking thing to put on my phone, not something I want on there for too long. Will do a job until I eventually get a bumper though, although I can see that taking a bit of time..

Blooming awesome Dman. Glad to hear the problems are all sorted.

Yep, still not satisfied in terms of having to have this case on it, but the bumpers look ok so I won't mind those. I'll be interested to see what the process is in getting one.

I didn't realise that 'no **** sherlock' and other derivatives were so offensive.

My HD2 used to do that if you gripped it round the bottom where the aerial was, even said so in the manual with the phone that it can affect signal quality if you do so. Got my iphone4 now and am well happy

I got an iPhone4 today and have now used it at my girlfriends, who has very marginal reception. It receives signal in exactly the same places as the old iPhone3G and looses it in the same places. Which is exactly the same as her Nokia before we got iPhones... After all the negative hype I was quite relieved it is just the same.
