iPhone 4 - UPDATE: Signal Issues

After trying unsuccessfully, while on holiday, to get hold of one... :(

I checked stock when we returned last Saturday and had left the house within 2 minutes of unloading the car... Much to Jill's annoyance... To race over to our local O2 store who were showing to be stocked...

Got halfway there and realized I'd stupidly left my wallet at home...

By the time I had returned and arrived at the shop their Out of Stock sign was up at the entrance and they were showing as no stock !

Next nearest shop was 25 miles away and they were still showing as stocked... So off I raced at legal speed limits... :naughty: ...arrived and only half a dozen in the queue but there appeared to still be stock and staff going mental...

As I snail paced to the front of the queue the staff emerged to say they only had 32Gb left... Phew, I thought they were going to say they had run out... :gag:

Short story long... Managed to get my two 32Gbs and, after hanging on a phone at the shop for O2 to provide authority as mine is business account, I left a very happy and excited bunny... :D

This version is easily the best by far and I have been a fan since day one...

It is simply the sexiest, most beautiful gadget I am fortunate enough to own... ...or is my new iPad running it close... :suspect:

If you are hesitating then I would suggest you stop and just take the plunge... You will not regret it imhgo...

:p

Awesome Rog

I must say that I am 100% with you on it being the sexiest yet. I still cant decide whether it beats the feeling in hand of my all time fave - the first gen.

Glad to hear you got on OK upgrading the business accounts - I toyed with the idea of getting one in store but was told by o2 CS that "each store has different requirements for proving business ID"! I managed in the end to get lucky with our 10+ account manager who managed to find us the 6 handsets we were after in stock.

I am back to black on this one as didn't want to wait for the white version - and I am glad I did. You are right. Sexy as.

Great stuff Smoothie... :D

Until they do them in Green I am afraid I will stick with the Black models...

Still not sure whether to go for a screen cover as I am really loving the responsiveness of the iP4... ...am hoping my Moshi will be all the protection I will need... :suspect:

:p

Is it the iGlaze or puch you have from Moshi?

I got a really nice pouch from Carephonewarehouse - lots of suede padding.

It's the pouch mate... :D ...would not be without one tbh and don't really get on with any of the cases I have tried... ...and at least the Moshi allows full touchy feely of the sexy beast when I am using it... :naughty:

:p

Can anyone recommend a good case?

Went to Orange today and CPW and neither had anything worth using.

Depends what type you are after. I prefer 'slip' cases rather than silicon surrounds etc and I got this one from CPW. Really nice quality - proper leather and nice soft suede interior. Quite think padding for a slip case too.

Let us know which type you are after....

Another vote for the slip on/off type although mine is the famed Moshi... :D...iP4 comes out clean as a whistle every time and you get to go all touchy feely with that lovely nekkid sexy beast... :naughty:

Shame they don't come in Green though...

:p

Apple have announced a press conference tomorrow at around 6pm our time. I really can't see them issuing a recall, but I hope they do because I have the signal problem, plus I managed to scratch my screen last week :p

 good spot Dave!

Just coming to post that very thing! Great minds....

I have not had any problems with signal - it does dip, but only to what my 3Gs was getting.

Can't see a recall happening - would think it will be a free bumper for all and a firmware update...

I'd be happy with a bumper, but plenty won't want them. Unfortunately my handset completely loses all signal within seconds, I've toyed with the idea of taking it back to Apple but I don't know how successful I'd be in getting a new one.

Yep. I'd have been happy with a bumper but neither Apple nor O2 would take responsibility and give me one for free. I briefly thought about returning the iPhone and terminating my contract in a show of displeasure but decided to sell it on eBay. I got £750 for it. I now have a 3GS and a LOT of change in my pocket. And I can make phone calls again!

I would go down this route but even with the signal problems, no other phone I've ever owned comes close to it, including the previous iPhones I've had.

I have not had any signal problems at all. Mine is in a rubbery case all of the time but I have tried in a number of places to reproduce the problem with the phone out of the case, without sucess! I guess I am one of the lucky ones!

Bought myself a bumper and slip case for mine yesterday.

Don't think they'll offer anything free other than an update to the software.

We'll see.

They never usually have a press conference to announce a software update though.

Glad I stuck with my 3GS now. ;)

Apologies in advance if this repeats anything above I've not read through all 16 pages you see...

My son works for Orange and he was selling them on the day they were released. Within minutes he was on the blower to me, knowing I was interested in upgrading my 3G, and told me that if you hold the phone in your left hand it loses signal almost completely.
From what I've read since it's to do with the antenna being part of the metal surround but I've not seen that confirmed though.
I'll wait until my contract is up mid next year and the bugs are all worked out - assuming Apple don't ignore their customers.

Are you serious, Columbo?

Well, 4.0.1 installed and absolutely no difference, still lose signal in seconds when covering the antenna. Now look forward to this press conference tomorrow to see what crap they come out with.

Cheers, just ordered one.

FYI, 4.0.1 is to fix the formula for calculating the display of the signal strength, nobody said it was going to fix the attenuation issue.

Also, they apparently changed the manufacturing process to prevent it on new ones from here on.

I'll be interested to see what they say tomorrow, despite not being affected by the so called 'problem'.

Excellent, then I fully expect them to take mine back and replace it with one of these new ones. A software update that changes the signal display really isn't what I need when my signal dies every time I pick the thing up.

Sure, and just to keep you up to speed, you could have taken it back and exchanged it for ANY other phone at any point up to now..... but for some reason you haven't.

Tomorrow is going to be interesting, esp as they released the update today. This is either going to sort the whole issue or things are going to kick off royally in the anti apple camp.

Naah, the anti-apple camp are just gonna sit back and laugh. It's the Apple fanboys that'll be kicking off, because they can't make any phone calls. ;)

Er, I haven't because I've been running Macs for 15 years and have everything syncing through my home and work Macs and nothing works better than an iPhone for my work and personal emails/calendars. So why would I change it for an HTC or something else? Both my previous iPhones never had this problem, unfortunately I sold my last one to finance the new one. I went back to Apple but they haven't had any stock to change it, and regardless of that have told me they wouldn't change it anyway.

It makes me laugh that those of us that dare speak out are supposed to be 'Apple haters'. Grow up, there's an obvious fault and having given Apple a hell of a lot of my money over the past fifteen years, I've a right to be ****ed off with them over this. For some though, Apple could brand a turd and it would still be amazing.
