Ipads overhyped or not ??

If the deal breaker is 2 hands fear not. There are tons of ways to use a tablet with one hand. Lots of cases allow for resting it at an angle etc

The netbook sales question was a rhetorical one. They are dying.
Here's a question, if you could only afford one computing device in your household, and your choices are a tablet or a netbook, which would you choose ?
Tablets are a luxury item, there's too much they can't do for what they cost, now if they cut the keyboard off a netbook, you might have a point.
A netbook is an affordable computer that has much more capability, there is some market cross over but on the whole netbook functionality is far more valuable than restricted gizmos with fancy touch screens.
Peeps with £300 for a computer are unlikely to buy a tablet, peeps with £300 they dunno what to do with....might.

Whilst tablets choose to limit their functionality, there will be a market for netbooks.

Dying ?....we're all dying, "dying" is just a word you choose to suit an agenda.

Neither. I'd buy a second hand laptop or desktop.

No disagreement that a tablet is a luxury item. It is.

Doesn't make a netbook good though. Yes they have more functionality but they are a jack of all trades and a master on none. A tablet is a master at digesting media.

You're wrong in my opinion and the figures back me. Netbooks have always been a "secondary device" for people. They don't really need all the functionality of a computer because they already have a computer. Netbooks sales have dropped by 40% in the last year and still dropping. People's secondary device is becoming a tablet or a smartphone.

theres thousands of articles out there for you to read on the topic. Here's an example:

I agree with Joe, I would go for a laptop or desktop , I had to get a new computer recently to edit photos and video I went for a desktop, still best tool for home editing :)

I'd have to say, I'd have an iPad!

Not used my desktop since I got mine. The only thing I dislike is the lack of flash support but with most web designers now using html5 this won't be an issue for long.

Mind you, a top of the range iMac is a different matter, hmmm.....

You can't choose a 2nd hand laptop or desktop because the question doesn't offer it as an option.
Your average Jo shmo probably wouldn't be confident enough to spend his significant savings on 2nd hand equipment.
Like I said, a netbook is a cheap entry in to computing, there may be peeps that buy them as a secondary device, there may be peeps that buy them for other reasons, I dunno, but you can't buy a tablet that offers a solution to the everyday realities of computing.
So, the question is still there to be answered...

take your time...;)

Lol. If you are going to use that argument to ban discussion on laptops, then you can also use the same argument to ban talk on netbooks. The OP didn't mention, laptops, netbooks or desktops, but he/she just wanted to know if an iPad was better than another different brand of tablets.

And anyway, why do discussions on this forum have to degenerate to this? Some people find tablets are best for their needs. Others, it's a laptop. For some more people, it would be netbooks. So what if one person prefers one tool over another? It's just a tool, used for a job, and if someone thinks a tablet is best for their needs, so what? It's like the Canon vs Nikon claptrap that comes out every now and again. They both produce good photos, just some people work better with one rather than the other. It comes down to personal preference. Fundamentally, it's their own money; they can spend it how they choose and it doesn't affect anyone but themselves.

Oh I see, why is a second hand laptop not an option? Are we in some made up future when all the laptops have been removed? I thought you were asking me a question not Jo schmo.

I thought you were interested in genuine debate. But it seems like instead you just want to craft your question until the answer you want is given.

Sorry I'm more interested in actual debate.

Agree it doesnt really matter ipad, laptop, desktop or netbook, all will do the job
everyone has their own views but its what youre happy using that matters:)

And to add to the debate even more, my wife has a hulking laptop that wasn't suited to sofa surfing. She wanted an iPad. I then got one from work, she hated it, and then wanted a netbook. Then she realised that netbooks aren't too good at running MS Word with big docs (and neither are iPads!) so now wants an ultra book :-/

I'm just trying to point out that there is still a market for netbooks for the reasons I've already mentioned.
A netbook is the only way in to computing for a lot of people on a budget because tablets just don't cut it....its not rocket science, question crafting, debate or anything else, its a simple reality of economics.
I know what you're interested in, and it ain't debate, so that ends it.

the market, the statistics and everything else is proving you wrong. Netbooks are dying, the statistics back that.

You say that a netbook is the only way to computing for a lot of people - I don't know a single person who owns a netbook as their only device, its always purchased as a secondary device. Not saying there aren't people who do, but they are massively in the minority and companies are not going to keep shipping products that only service a tiny minority.

The netbook is dead.

I'm fairly sure you can get a replacement battery! ....... Hope that helps? :)

I'm having my iPad's babies, I love it that much!

there are two things that stop me from going out and getting an iPad today - the size of it, and the cost of it. The tablet is too big for me, but something more the size of a Google Nexus 7 (around 7 inches) is better. Anyone with the same sentiments as me could consider looking at that one as it has gotten very good reviews even from users of Apple products, notably who say that the version of Android on it actually feels finished.

Well your dream is about to come true.

The iPad mini (or whatever it is going to be) will probably cost at least £50 more than the nexus - if not twice as much - and might not even be as powerful. Thought of that already and unless Apple seriously impress with the next upgrade I won't touch it.

Why anyone wants a device between a smartphone and a tablet is beyond me. Too big to carry around, too small to interact effectively.

The market for a device of that size has got to be really small.

that was my argument against tablets generally - it is certainly true of the 7" variants like the nexus, but i don't see that the extra 3 inches on the ipad makes much odds

...on the other hand, an iPad sized jobbie is way too big for my pocket and still too big for my bag. I'd probably also get tired of holding it in my hands. A smaller device will fit in my bag and be easier to hold. As long as it's big enough to convey the information I need without squinting (that'll be the next test) anything else is superfluous imo.

in what way does a smartphone or an ipod touch not already fit that?

also - you must have a tiny bag! What kind of bag doesn't fit an ipad into it?

you can't use a smartphone comfortably for much more than 10 or 20 minutes to browse the web or type on.

It's a crumpler bag, but I have the compartments set up for bits of camera, keys etc. Just looking at it I don't think an iPad would fit right. but besides... normal iPad is too expensive. I could afford it if I wanted to, I just don't want to spend that much on an internet reading device for when I'm away.

I've been using mine for the last 30 mins or so, I can often drain a full battery browsing the web on my phone because I can't be bothered to get up and get my laptop...

sometimes i do a poo that lasts more than 20 mins and if i didnt have the foresight to bring my ipad up, i'll spend the whole time on the iphone

I'm sorry but if it takes you anything more than a minute or two to have a jobby you either aren't trying hard enough or you have constipation. Twenty minutes!! :gag:

New iPad vs Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1...

I have an iPhone and MacBook Air, and have no real need for an iPad unless to use on the road whilst meeting clients.

Disagree.

It's teaching my daughter how to read. It already taught her how to count. The education possibilities are huge.

Wow! A parent substitute! My folks taught me how to read, write and count.

FWIW, my wife was issued an iPad 2 by her work (Apple have managed to sell said workplace software that only exists for Apples so they're trapped into having iCrap (although the IT dept all seem to despise the brand!)). She was SO glad when it went back last week and was reissued to an iTit (we've all seen them in the window at Starbucks with the illuminated fruit showing prominently and the white ear buds plugged into the (equally prominently displayed) iPod...). Now she (wife, not iTit!) is looking for a Windows based tablet for her own use which has USB ports built in (rather than an extra (? 25+ ?) option) and file formats that match her work computer and those we have at home, rather than having to fart about with format converters.

Yes, the iPad looks great and works OK as a browsing machine but as much more, it's (IMO) crippled by the lack of a USB port as standard and by the price tag. Yves Geza's little iNetbook (can't remember it's proper name!) did impress me though, apart from the OS (I suppose I'm too used to Windoze and too old to change!).

That's me! Growing old disgracefully. (BTW, the cat's litter tray is her iPad - s***box...)

And BTW, not sure of Spain's copyright laws but here in the UK, it's still technically illegal to copy even CDs you already own (and DVDs) onto other formats, although I'm not sure anyone doing it for purely personal use has ever been prosecuted.

Why would you possibly want a Windows alternative? Slower, more bugs, not as intuitive, built cheaply, shoddy customer support, poor accessories, ugly. Need I go on?

Its on obvious choice. Fact.

If you want USB and all that rubbish just buy a laptop. Just a browsing machine my left nut! I've not had to boot up my desktop since I bought my iPad 3, and yes, that includes processing raw files...
