Interesting thread However its from our perspective of being techno able, there are a whole stack of people out there who are far from it and this targets them nicely.
Ipad do I want one, possibly? but I think I would wait a while
We are not a typical family, as we do have some equipment that requires a certain amount of technical knowledge. Our home is CBus enabled, which basically means that it is an automated home with lighting, heating and ventilation controlled by microprocessor.
We are a family of five, two adults and three children. Myself and the kids are computer literate, the wife however is far from computer literate. Therefore we all have different needs, and amongst that the house also requires control. Looking at the iPad, it may just provide the solution to a lot of problems.
The kids all have computers in their rooms, and all they do is use them for Facebook, twitter and e-mail. Even using Google and the Internet is a secondary thing, yes they occasionally use a word processing program or use a computer for other types of schoolwork but the fact is they more often than not are using computers recreationally. Therefore the iPad would fit the bill perfectly small compact doesn't take up any space and can be moved from room to room easily. I could possibly get away with just one ipad as they are rarely all in at the same time.
Then the wife, all she wants to do is check her mail, browse the Internet from time to time, view photographs and occasionally do the odd piece of work that may involve using a word processor. I gave her my iPhone, she got on with it instantly, mainly because it's very easy to understand and work out. She loved the apps because again they were user-friendly simple straightforward and did the job that was required. She doesn't like technology and therefore she doesn't want it rammed down her throat. She just wants to get on with what she wants to do. Ipad for her? most definitely yes.
Then the house. Touch screen controller for cbus system mounted in one place in black-and-white measuring 6 x 4" approximately £800. Try buying a colour touchscreen to do the same job from clipsal and you are talking thousands. However I can use an app on my iPhone, costing just like less than £60 and it will interface with the Cbus system and do everything that I require. Ipad, just made itself very very appealing. Same app on the iPad and the iPad can go anywhere in the house and I can control lighting and heating and ventilation.
So the iPod starts to look very tempting, I can ditch the hundred pound photo frame that is somewhat smaller than the iPad. I can forget about buying a touchscreen for my Cbus system at a cost of £800 I could ditch the three computers in the kids rooms which would free up space reduce power consumption and maybe even introduce them to being back with us in one room. (I might even get to see more of them that way,) Now if I can do away with the Pronto and control my TV and other remote-controlled equipment from the iPad it would be

. If I can wall mount it on a docking station that charges it whilst it displays photographs another winner. I am sure that apps will bring about even more possibilities from it.
For me its appeal is being able to go to bed and read without disturbing my wife by putting lights on, pure bliss. I can also see that we are not far away from having content delivered digitally by all the tabloids. Morning newspaper at seven o'clock every morning without fail no matter what the weather was doing and not having to rely on a paper boy (they don't want the work these days anyway) now that's progress.
I think Apple are actually thinking ahead and they are going to capitalise on bringing the home up to speed in every way possible. I think the iPad will catch on, yes it's expensive but when you look ahead it will actually cover a lot of aspects that are presently covered by several other gadgets. Automation in houses is going to increase, our homes are going to become more and more reliant upon iPad type devices. By the time the developers get their apps out for the new iPad I think that more and more people will see its possibilities. It'll never be a PC but then it's not supposed to be, those of us who use PCs will continue to do so, however there are many people out there who have no requirement for a PC and never will do and the iPad fits very neatly into that niche and other niche's
I know a net book will do much of the above, certainly the kids thing and wife but not in my opinion as well. The Ipad cuts out all the not required elements and provides the user with easy to use interface that will do exactly what they want it to do and will provide the user with the ability to tailor it to their needs through the apps available. They just need to drop the price a bit put a camera in as standard and sort the flash and I think then its in my living room.
Just think of the app possibilities
