Interested in a portrait/natural light workshop?

I'd definitely be interested. I live in Scotland but would be willing to travel down as far as the Midlands or possibly London. Brighton may be a touch too far for me. Best would be a venue in Edinburgh!

So in summary, I'd be willing to go to quite some length to be able to attend as I believe I could learn a lot from you.

Amnesia - I am new to all this too, so we can sit at theback and giggle at the idea of CJ in a corset with her whip - I am also, behind my bluff of macho bravado, pretty insecure although getting used to looking a fool, so why not give it a go..!
As for you, jhob - don't easyjet fly from Edinburgh to Gatwick - then a 25 minute train to Brighton - much quicker than my flight in...

CJ - I'm in - already cancelled one visitor, who has been planning his visit to see me and my girls for over a year..

I would really really love to do this but my backup body is failing and will need replacing one day and I'm trying for a 5D. If I was getting more work in I'd love to. Your work is really inspiring and it would be great to not only meet you but learn from you. I'm not hinting for a discount there as I would happily pay just things are tight right now.

Aye, they do.. and the cost is not too bad either. However I am trying to avoid flying, especially domestically, in an effort to reduce my carbon footprint. I can get an overnight national express coach for about £60 return which isn't too bad. 12 hours though! I may yet take the flight option but that will only be as a last resort.

..and I have to tell you - the only time I have ever lost baggage was going to Edinburgh with Easyjet, but that was many years ago - months later, I got sent some luggage - a backpack full of womens cloths - how did they know about that side of me, eh..?
Trouble was, none of it fitted me (tried it all, just in case..)
Also, I hope I don't seem to be trying to push anyone into this, but I so want it to happen - it'll be just in time for me to practise some of what I learn before my big wedding at Christmas, so please come, if only to help me out - you know I need the help..

I'll come Steve, if you pay for me :P

The plane will go whether you're on it or not so in theory it's more environmentally freindly for the plane to be full than not. Besides if CJ is flying over for this the planet is doomed anyway. Perhaps we can convince her row or sail over ;)

That is true, however in the long-term by withdrawing my custom from the airline industry, as others are doing, demand will eventually fall and there will be less flights.

As it turns out I think I probably will be flying as it's the only reasonable option cost/time-wise. It's a shame that rail transport is so expensive that it's just not cost effective for me to get a sleeper train there and back, in fact I couldn't even find availability on a sleeper train down to London at any price which is just crazy.

I'm not against air travel per-se, I just personally choose to avoid it where possible and seek more environmentally friendly forms of transport. There are obviously many occasions where air travel is necessary, or at least unavoidable to do a certain job, and I think we can all agree that in CJ's case it is.

I can assure you that I will be flying rather than swimming or paddling. ;)

OK, we're off to a nice start with three having committed thus far. I will get an online registration page up today to keep things organized.

If you're considering attending but have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to PM or e-mail me. If we do get a full count of fifteen participants, I may be able to lower the tuition even a bit more.

I'm really looking forward to it too. I've confirmed that I can definitely make it that weekend. I've little doubt that it will be worth every penny.

Opportunities to learn from someone so talented and with such an obvious enthusiasm for passing that knowledge on don't come around often. Not for anyone would I travel the length of the country and forego some of my principles (re: flying) to do so!

So come on the rest of you - let CJ know you're coming so that we can get sufficient numbers and make this workshop a reality!

:agree: - ^^^ wot jhob said ^^^

I have to say that I would love to come to this but alas it looks like it will be the same weekend that my daughter to be will be coming to live with us.

So I hope it is a great success and that off the back of this, another workshop could be run in the next year.

I am interested too, is the whip included or do we have to pay extra? Just need to work out if I have enough spare pennies for this and my 40D

Yes, it has veered a bit hasn't it? LOL.

I didn't get the official registration page up yesterday as I had planned due to the death of my aunt, however it will be up today. All kidding aside, the workshops are a lot of fun, but are also quite intense. I don't do anything halfway, and that includes teaching.

What sort of times will the workshop be starting and finishing for those of us that have transport connections to plan?

John, I generally plan for about 10am to 4pm. That leaves time for people to get there in the morning without being too stressed. It also allows time to do portfolio reviews in the morning before the workshop begins, which is particularly important in larger workshops.

I may just be speaking for myself, but come the day, I'll be a puppy, eager to please, and not wanting to make too big a fool of myself, and desperate to try to absorb as much as possible, which I fear won't be much due to too many years of drug abuse, self abuse, and plain stupidity - still, one of us has to be at the bottom of the class..!

Looks like it's you and me equal bottom then Steve lol ;)

 I'll take your word for that ;)

So come on Rob, are you joining us for this then? :plusone:

I'm very interested in this, but can't commit yet as I'm not sure if I'm available that weekend.

:)
I have management approval to attend
so please add me to the list :)

I've just noticed this thread and think it's an excellent opportunity!

How are you looking with regards to numbers at the moment CJ? My wife and I are very interested. We've been meaning to take a trip to Brighton for quite a while and we're both off for a week from 20th October so hopefully we'd be OK date wise?

As for northern locations, I'm not sure what sort of thing you're looking for in a venue but I do know of a couple of studios that can cater for natural light shoots. The first is in Nottingham - link whilst the second is just over the border in North Wales - link

Excellent mmcp42! Management approval is always a good thing to have, eh?

Photostar and ranarama, please don't feel pressured to commit until you're comfortable. Do let me know as soon as you're able, so I can keep on track with planning.

Photostar, if you've never done any portrait work, this is the ideal time for you to do a workshop on the subject. You won't have developed any bad habits that you have to unlearn. I think you'll find yourself right at home.....even with this bunch. LOL.

- CJ

Glo, we have six definites (combining posts here with PM's I've received) and a number of strong maybe's. That's a strong enough showing for me to take the calculated risk. I'm just needing to hear back from the venue confirming the dates. Once that happens, I'll officially open the registration and buy myself a plane ticket.

(Thirteen-year-old son is begging to come with me to help out. Hmmmm.)

- CJ

Yeah, but then there's the part where I can't stay out all night on the days before and after the workshop. LOL. Tough call!

Photostar 1 - please come and join in - for all my loud mouth boyish-ness, I am pretty quiet and shy, and not very convinced of my ability with a camera. I am at ease with females, as I am not a mans man, but once at ease with the company, I am fairly good at helping others feel comfy - all I take pictures of is my kids, so am not a photographer in the way that most of you TP lot are, and I too need the support of those who feel that they are unsure - please try to get along if you can...
Steve

CJ - you think we brits can stay out all night...??
Maybe it's just me, but I'll be heading home for a mug of cocoa and some serious note-writing after a day with you...

Just wanted to mention in this thread that I've officially opened registration. Here's the link: http://www.cheryljacobsworkshops.com/Brighton.html

For those who know they will be attending, it would be most helpful if you could register as soon as you're able. Hopefully we'll fill this thing up! I'm very much looking forward to it.
