Interested in a portrait/natural light workshop?

If you're happy to slum it for a night or two the backpackers hostel I believe is around a tenner a night.

I will be heading back to London for the night, but an early meal or a drink or two would be good - the only place I know of is Browns - not been for many years though..
Any ideas ??

photostar - just for you...

Hello, all!

My apologies for taking awhile in getting this e-mail
out to you all. My computers and internet have been
conspiring against me, but I've finally got the little
devils straightened out. I think.

I'm very much looking forward to this workshop! We
have a good group so far, with still a few spaces for
those who like to do things at last minute. Looking at
the attendee list, I feel quite confident in
guaranteeing that we'll all have a great deal of fun in
Brighton.

The workshop will be held at the Hotel Pelirocco
located at:

10 Regency Square
Brighton
BN1 2FG

The hotel's website is www.hotelpelirocco.co.uk . If
you visit that link, you'll see that the hotel is far
from ordinary, have been named "Brighton's sauciest
stopever." It is located very close to the West Pier
and not far from the Palace pier, near plenty of shops,
pubs, restaurants, and whatever else you might be
looking for. Coffee, tea, and lunch will be catered by
the hotel and a nearby specialty deli, which sounds
wonderful. I did note that one attendee has a garlic
allergy; please do let me know if you have any other
dietary concerns (those who are diabetic, vegetarian,
etc.)

There are several specialty rooms at the Hotel
Pelirocco, but I will say that they are not
inexpensive, and I do not have information regarding
the availability of the rooms. I plan to stay at the
Royal Albion Hotel, which is within easy walking
distance, just a mile or so, I believe.

The workshop will run approximately 10am - 4pm both
days. The first day will mostly be spent in the
"classroom" while the second day will be more hands-on.
Come expecting the unexpected! Workshops are never
boring.

What to bring:

- your camera and whatever lenses/accessories you want
to use

- a handheld light meter if you have one (no worries
if you don't)

- memory cards and/or film (I recommend 400 speed film
for maximum flexibility in shooting)

- a portfolio (or simply a collection of photos if
you'd prefer) for critique. This is optional, but
you'll find that I'm a diplomatic critic and you will
learn a lot from the experience.)

- your sense of humor. I refuse to not have fun.

That's it for now! Please don't hesitate to let me
know if I've forgotten something, or if you need
additional information.

All the best,

CJ

Looking forward to meeting you and others, and expecxt me to be fairly quiet and shy to start with...
Steve

Hi, all -

Trying to get back to being around a bit more! Between the start of the busy season, and catching some sort of respiratory crud, I'm pretty much just working and sleeping right now. Actually, I'm a little relieved to be ill BEFORE the workshop, rather than during. The last time I was in the UK teaching, I broke two ribs coughing!

Steve, thanks for re-sharing the workshop info. I just got your PM this afternoon, Carol. We do still have a few more spaces left if anyone is considering the workshop.

- CJ

CJ - sorry to hear life isn't all fun for you at present, but good just to hear from you !
My flight is booked - I arrive on the 19th, do the workshop, and then, how good is this, I have been commissioned to do some portraits on the 22nd before flying home again on the 23rd - might just have some new-found skills to use !!
The portraits are for some people I do building work for - I took some a few weeks ago, and the client, who is a good friend, showed me what the last photographer charged and told me to charge more (the sitting cost was way more than I would have asked, and 10x8 prints were 40 quid a time..!).
I am so looking forward to it - it will be my first time in England when I am not working 12-15 hours every day for 6 years !

Steve, I'm looking forward to it, too! Congrats on the portrait sessions. I thought about offering a few myself as I have some Brighton connections, but in the end, I've decided to enjoy some street photography for relaxation. I'm also planning to bring my old 4x5 to do some large format shots of random people. I always enjoy that.

I agree about those portrait rates. Mine are fairly high, but not compared to London rates. My 8x10's are regularly $175US at the moment -- but that's for toned fiber prints, so it's a little different.

I just got a new tattoo, so I'll be sporting fresh ink. It's my fourth. I'm an addict.

Oooh you'll get on well with Beverley then, she's already got 4 and is after her fifth

Excellent! I've got two on my lower back, one on my right shoulder, and now one on my inner left wrist. I wanted one I can actually see. LOL. Of course, I'm also secretly enjoying that my sister is too squeamish about the veins in her wrist to even be able to look at my new one. Heh heh. The thought of needles over veins and tendons makes her instantly pale.

Funnily enough Beverley is the same, she can't even look at a needle without feeling feint, yet she can get a tattoo done without any problem  You girls are just wierd

I'm not telling you where Bev's tattoos are, suffice to say that one is for my eyes only :D

Ha. The difference is the level of desire. I desire a tattoo, and therefore I don't mind the needle; I do not desire a blood transfusion, and therefore I do mind. (Having had both, I can definitely affirm that the tattoo is much less painful and far more rewarding.)

Be afraid Steve  be VERY afraid

..and the tattoo's, and the experience we all want to learn from......

I am afraid, very afraid..

CJ - any chance of a list of who is coming from here ? - having never met any of them, it'll be wierd putting faces to the strange posts and threads.... (Grendel - is your avatar really you....?)

Grendel - is your avatar really you....?

lol ;) err no Steve. Unfortunately I'm not quite as youthful :( This is me, in the "What do you look like" thread

I agree though, it would be good to know who's actually going. I think I know but not 100% sure

Oh no, not just tattoo'ed women, but men too..!
Looking forward to meeting you Starrider, I think !

my name is in that hat
if only I could get CJ to take my money!!!!

Oh no  I hope we don't confuse you for Cheryl or Beverley

Looking forward to meeting you

Why is it that all the women going seem to scare me - mad mare with mad hair added to the list of ones to sit away from.......
I'll be the gently quivering bloke trying to remain safe in the corner with crossed fingers held out to ward off evil wimmen !!

I might sit with you Steve
I was scared about the course
I'm now more scared about the attendees :help:

I'm there, with just the one tattoo. Not that it is generally visible mind.

No tattoo's, but I am wondering if you should sit by the pierced and tattoo'ed, rather than by me....

ginger and grumpy - what next..?

posh and sporty?!?!?!

You don't need to be scared of a few tatoo's. I'm not a biker chick and i don't have love and hate written on my hands....yet

Oo...Only just found this thread!
Would love to go but as i've just finished college and unemployed I might have to give it a miss.:'(
Unless I can erm....'borrow' some of the 'rents.
